The visit to the Textile Art Biennial in Guimarães was a unique and enriching experience. This event, which spread across various parts of the city, is a celebration of contemporary textile art, exploring the versatility of fabric as a means of artistic expression. The exhibition, which takes place every two years, offers a way for artists from different parts of the world to present their works, covering everything from traditional weaving techniques to innovations that combine fabrics with other forms of art, such as installation and sculpture.
The concept of the Biennale is to take art to different public and private spaces in the city.

A visita à Bienal Arte Têxtil em Guimarães foi uma experiência única e enriquecedora. Este evento, que se estendeu por vários pontos da cidade, é uma celebração da arte têxtil contemporânea, explorando a versatilidade do tecido como meio de expressão artística. A exposição, que acontece a cada dois anos, oferece uma uma forma para artistas de diversas partes do mundo apresentarem suas obras, abordando desde técnicas tradicionais de tecelagem até inovações que combinam tecidos com outras formas de arte, como a instalação e a escultura.
O conceito da Bienal é levar a arte a diferentes espaços públicos e privados da cidade.

Heading towards the historic center of the city, we find the Garage Auto Avenue facilities (right next to the School of Visual Arts). The pieces, often made from recycled materials, appear to tell stories while exploring contemporary issues such as consumption, sustainability and cultural identity.

Seguindo para o centro histórico da cidade, encontramos as instalações Garage Auto Avenue (mesmo ao lado da Escola de Artes Visuais). As peças, muitas vezes feitas de materiais reciclados, parecem contar histórias, enquanto exploravam questões contemporâneas, como o consumo, a sustentabilidade e a identidade cultural.

The most fascinating thing about the Guimarães Textile Art Biennial is the way in which fabric, a material generally associated with everyday life, is transformed into a powerful and universal language. The works not only attract attention for their aesthetic beauty, but also for the depth of the messages they convey. Some of the most impressive pieces were large-scale, engaging the audience and creating a unique atmosphere. There were also smaller, more intimate displays that explored the details and textures of fabric, providing a more personal connection.

O mais fascinante da Bienal Arte Têxtil de Guimarães é a maneira como o tecido, um material geralmente associado ao cotidiano, se transforma em uma linguagem poderosa e universal. As obras não só chamam à atenção pela sua beleza estética, mas também pela profundidade das mensagens que transmitem. Algumas das peças mais impressionantes eram de grande escala, que envolviam o público e criavam uma atmosfera única. Havia também exposições menores, mais intimistas, que exploravam os detalhes e as texturas do tecido, proporcionando uma conexão mais pessoal.

Fatigue started to take its toll, and we decided to take a break to rest and warm up a little. We went to one of the traditional pastry shops near the historic center. The cozy atmosphere was the perfect refuge after hours of walking around the city. The warmth of the space, combined with the sweet aroma of cakes and coffee, brought a wonderful feeling of comfort. We sat near the window, which offered us a peaceful view of the central square.

O cansaço começou a fazer-se sentir, e decidimos fazer uma pausa para descansar e aquecer um pouco. Fomos até uma das confeitarias tradicionais perto do centro histórico. O ambiente acolhedor foi o refúgio perfeito após horas de caminhada pela cidade. O calor do espaço, combinado com o aroma doce dos bolos e cafés, trouxe uma sensação de conforto maravilhosa. Sentamo-nos perto da janela, que nos oferecia uma vista tranquila para a praça central.

The visit to the Textile Art Biennial was wonderful. It was an opportunity to realize the transformative potential of fabric in contemporary art and the way it can transmit emotions, provoke reflections and question our relationship with the world around us.
It was a day full of discoveries and revisiting places. I say again that in fact, every time we visit Guimarães we discover something new.

A visita à Bienal Arte Têxtil foi maravilhosa. Foi uma oportunidade de perceber o potencial transformador do tecido na arte contemporânea e a forma como ele pode transmitir emoções, provocar reflexões e questionar a nossa relação com o mundo ao nosso redor.
Foi um dia cheio de descobertas e de revisitar locais. Volto a dizer que de facto, de cada vez que visitamos Guimarães descobrimos algo novo.
