After visiting the Nau Quinhentista, which proved to be an unforgettable experience, we headed to Alfândega Régia. Located in the historic center of Vila do Conde, it is a building of great relevance, not only for its architecture, but also for its importance in the economic and port history of the region. This visit led us to better understand the fundamental role that the city played in the Atlantic trade routes during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Depois de conhecermos a Nau Quinhentista, revelou-se uma experiência inesquecível, rumamos à Alfândega Régia. Localizada no centro histórico de Vila do Conde, é um edifício de grande relevância, não apenas pela sua arquitetura , mas também pela sua importância na história económica e portuária da região. Esta visita levou-nos a entender melhor o papel fundamental que a cidade desempenhou nas rotas comerciais do Atlântico durante os séculos XV e XVI.

The Royal Customs building, built in the 18th century, was, for many years, a crucial point in the control and regulation of goods that passed through the port of Vila do Conde. It served as the Kingdom's tax post, collecting customs duties on goods imported and exported through the city's port.

O edifício da Alfândega Régia, construído no século XVIII, foi, durante muitos anos, um ponto crucial no controlo e regulação das mercadorias que passavam pelo porto de Vila do Conde. Desempenhou enquanto posto fiscal do Reino, a função de recolher os direitos aduaneiros das mercadorias importadas e exportadas através do porto da cidade.

The history of the Customs House is directly linked to the history of maritime trade in Vila do Conde, a city that, since medieval times, has established itself as an important commercial center. During the 15th century, the port was one of the most important in the Kingdom, connecting Portugal to international markets, especially those located in northern Europe, Africa and, of course, South America. The construction of the Customs House appears, therefore, as a response to the growing need to control and supervise trade, especially after the arrival of spices and riches from large navigations.

A história da Alfândega está diretamente ligada à história do comércio marítimo em Vila do Conde, uma cidade que, desde os tempos medievais, se afirmou como um importante centro comercial. Durante o século XV, o porto foi um dos mais relevantes do Reino, ligando Portugal aos mercados internacionais, especialmente àqueles localizados no norte da Europa, África e, claro, à América do Sul. A construção da Alfândega surge, portanto, como uma resposta à crescente necessidade de controlar e fiscalizar o comércio, sobretudo após a chegada das especiarias e das riquezas oriundas das grandes navegações.

Upon entering we are guided through spaces that preserve the memory and experience of a time when the seaport was a link between the known world and the unknown seas. The interior of the building houses temporary and permanent exhibitions, featuring historical objects and documents that help us understand the commercial practices of the time. We can observe old maps that illustrate the trade routes used by Portuguese navigators, as well as measuring and weighing instruments used to determine the taxes to be paid.

Ao entrar somos guiados por espaços que preservam a memória e a vivência de um tempo em que o porto marítimo era um elo entre o mundo conhecido e os mares desconhecidos. O interior do edifício abriga exposições temporárias e permanentes, apresentam objetos e documentos históricos que nos ajudam a entender as práticas comerciais da época. Podemos observar mapas antigos que ilustram as rotas comerciais utilizadas pelos navegadores portugueses, bem como instrumentos de medição e pesagem usados para determinar os impostos a pagar.

One of the most interesting areas of the visit was, without a doubt, the room where there is a detailed model of the port of Vila do Conde in the 16th century. The model helps to visualize the size and organization of the port at the time, allowing us to understand how goods were unloaded, stored and subsequently distributed. The visit also allowed us to observe how the building related to the port environment, with spaces dedicated to the storage and control of goods.

Uma das áreas mais interessantes da visita foi, sem dúvida, a sala onde se encontra uma maquete detalhada do porto de Vila do Conde no século XVI. A maquete ajuda a visualizar a dimensão e a organização do porto da época, permitindo perceber como as mercadorias eram descarregadas, armazenadas e posteriormente distribuídas. A visita também nos permitiu observar como o edifício se relacionava com o ambiente portuário, com espaços dedicados à guarda e ao controle das mercadorias.

The Royal Customs is not only a place to preserve history, but also a space for reflection on the importance of trade and cultural exchanges that take place across the sea. The building conveys the idea that, at the time, the city of Vila do Conde was a point of confluence of multiple influences, where goods, people and ideas from various parts of the world crossed paths.

A Alfândega Régia não é apenas um local de preservação da história, mas também um espaço de reflexão sobre a importância do comércio e das trocas culturais que se desenvolvem através do mar. O edifício transmite a ideia de que, na época, a cidade de Vila do Conde era um ponto de confluência de múltiplas influências, onde se cruzavam mercadorias, pessoas e ideias vindas de várias partes do mundo.

It was a unique opportunity to learn more deeply about the past of a city that played a central role in Portugal's maritime history. The combination of history, architecture and interactive exhibitions made this visit a unique and very educational experience.
