Around Northern Greece no. 13 – Beloi Viewpoint

The Wikos-Vjosa National Park is beautiful. In the previous post I showed you the secondary attractions of the park, but there is no denying that the best place is Beloi Viewpoint, from where there is a breathtaking view of the Wikos Gorge. To get there we had to drive for about 20 kilometers on a very steep, winding road deep into the National Park. This is how we reached the town of Vradeto, which can easily be described as the end of the world. There, at a mountain shelter called Balkoni Zagoriou, we parked the car and set off on an hour's trek. It wasn't far to the viewpoint. Half an hour, or about 2 kilometers one way, and half an hour and another 2 kilometers on the way back. Because the trek was very flat, we quickly reached our destination without much fatigue, and what we encountered there was a shock! A hole carved by a small river flowing along the bottom of the gorge, 1350 meters deep and probably not much wider. It is difficult to find the right words to describe this landscape. It is much easier to show your son-in-law, although even they do not fully reflect the gargantuan dimensions of the gorge.

The name of the gorge comes from... well, it is not entirely clear where. There are many theories. The first theory says that the name comes from a Slavic language and means "abyss" or "gorge".
The second theory says that the name comes from the Greek βίκος "stamnos with ears", which reflects the shape of the gorge and refers to the echoes that the walls of the gorge give off loudly.
The third theory says that the name comes from the Albanian word for a bridge or wooden pass, vig-u, and this is because in the times of the Ottoman Empire there was a wooden bridge in the canyon.

Park Narodowy Wikos-Wjosa jest piękny. W poprzednim wpisie pokazałem drugorzędne atrakcje parku, ale nie da się ukryć, że najlepszym miejscem jest Beloi Viewpoint skąd rozpościera się zapierający dech w piersiach widok na wąwóz Wikos. Aby się tam dostać musieliśmy jechać autem przez jakieś 20kilometrów po bardzo stromej krętej drodze wgłęb Parku Narodowego. W ten sposób dojechaliśmy do miasteczka Vradeto które spokojnie można określić mianem koniec świata. Tam przy schronisku górskim zwanym Balkoni Zagoriou zaparkowaliśmy samochód i ruszyliśmy na godzinny trekking. Do punktu widokowego nie było daleko. Pół godziny czyli jakieś 2 kilometry w jedną stronę i pół godziny i kolejne 2 kilometry w stronę powrotna. Ponieważ trekking był bardzo płaski to szybko bez większego zmęczenia doszliśmy do celu, a to co nas tam spotkało to był szok! Dziura wydrązona przez płynącą po dnie wąwozu malutką rzekę o głębokości 1350 metrów i szerokości pewnie nie wiele większej. Ciężko jest dobrać odpowiednie słowa aby opisać ten krajobraz. Dużo prościej jest pokazać zięcia, choć i one i tak nie w pełni oddają gargantuiczne rozmiary wąwozu.

Nazwa wąwozu wywodzi się… no właśnie nie do końca wiadomo skąd. Są liczne teorie. Teoria pierwsza mówi, że nazwa pochodzi ze słowiańskiego języka i oznacza „przepaść” lub „wąwóz”.
Druga teoria mówi, że nazwa pochodzi od greckiego βίκος „stamnos z uszami”, co odzwierciedlać ma kształt wąwozu i nawiązywać do echa jakie głośno oddają ściany wąwozu.
Trzecia teoria mówi, że nazwa pochodzi od albańskiego słowa oznaczającego most lub drewnianą przełęcz, vig-u, a to dlatego, że w czasach Imprerium Osmańskiego w kanionie znajdował się drewniany most.

Interestingly, there is usually no water in the gorge, and its bottom is filled only seasonally. Of course, there was no river visible from above, but when we had already enjoyed the view from the Beloi viewpoint, we decided to drive for an hour around and find ourselves on the other side, at the very bottom of the canyon. There, near the town of Vikos, is the Vikos Gorge View Point, where instead of seeing a huge open space, you see huge mountains surrounding you from all sides and feel as if you were being harassed by giants.

Co Ciekawe w wąwozie zwykle nie ma wody, a jego dno napełnia się wyłącznie sezonowo. Oczywiście z góry nie było widać żądnej rzeki, ale gdy już nacieszyliśmy się widokiem z punktu widokowego Beloi postanowiliśmy pojechać godzinę dookoła i znaleźć się po drugiej stronie, czyli na samym dnie kanionu. Tam koło miasteczka Vikos znajduje się Vikos Gorge View Point gdzie człowiek zamiast widzieć ogromną otwartą przestrzeń, to widzi ogromne otaczające go zewsząd góry i czuje się jakby napastowany przez gigantów.
