After spending half a day in the Kravica waterfall complex, it turned out that there was too much driving ahead of us that day, because just 10 kilometers away there was another tourist attraction that was supposed to keep us entertained for the rest of the day. At first I was a little, or maybe even very skeptical, because how could you expect something great from a place called Hutovsie mud?? It turned out that nothing could be further from the truth. Hutovo Blato is a fauna and flora reserve located in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Yes, most of the reserve is made up of swamps formed on the underground aquifer system of the Krupa River. The reserve is classified as one of the important bird habitat protection areas by BirdLife International and is the largest reserve of its type in the region. The reserve stands out from other such sites in the region with its large area but also diversity. Suffice it to say that over 240 species of birds live in Hutovo Blato, some of which live here only in the summer, but the vast majority have permanent habitats here. The greatest movement over the marshes takes place during the bird migration season, i.e. spring and autumn. This is when tens of thousands of birds fly here and fill the area around the lake to the limit. The entire reserve covers an area of 20 thousand hectares, of which Lake Hutovo Blato has an area of 7411 hectares. It was quite obvious that it is impossible to taste all the benefits of this place in one afternoon, but what we did was a world championship!

Cały rezerwat zajmuje powierzchnię aż 20 tysięcy hektarów, z czego jezioro Hutovo Blato to powierzchnia 7411 hektarów.

You can take a trip on a motorboat around the lake and the adjacent backwaters. Our entire group fit perfectly on two boats and I was lucky to get the first boat. My luck in this case was not that I managed to fulfill some sick ambition to always be first, but that as the first boat to sail we came across flocks of birds lurking in the reeds, which as soon as they noticed our boat approaching them, took to the air. The spectacle was magical. The air was swarming with grebes, cormorants, herons, seagulls and many other birds that I was unable to recognize. Under the boat, in the crystal clear water, we could observe fish swimming and plants growing underwater. The whole trip lasted about an hour and was really very cheap, so now, after a while, when someone asks me what I liked most about Bosnia and Herzegovina, I point to Hutovo Blato without a moment's hesitation.
