Visiting Laoag, Ilocos Norte for the very first time is an experience i will always treasure. When i was working away from home i never imagined i would have the chance to visit a place so rich in history culture and beauty. I used to hear stories from other people about Laoag the old churches, the warm sun, the unique charm of heritage structures. But nothing compares to actually being there. The moment set foot in Laoag i felt like had stepped back into a simpler time where traditions were alive and deeply valued..

One of the first places I visited was the Paoay Church or the St. Augustine Church which is shown in the images. Its majestic façade stood proudly as if guarding centuries of stories. Standing in front of it i could not help but admire the strength and beauty of its architecture from the Spanish colonial era. You can truly feel the weight of history in every stone. The massive buttresses along the sides are incredibly impressive they were built specifically to withstand earthquakes, something the region is known for. I had seen countless photos of the church online but seeing it in person was a completely different experience. It looked bigger older grander and more meaningful.

While walking around the church grounds i felt a sense of peace. There were tourists but the place wasnt crowded. Some people were taking photos others were chatting with friends or spending time with family and some were quietly praying inside the church. That was when i realized that visiting Laoag wasnt just a regular trip it was also a moment of reflection and appreciation for the rich heritage of the Philippines.

I also got the chance to explore some Spanish era houses and heritage streets like the ones shown in the picture. The wooden windows capiz shells, and weathered walls made me feel as if i had entered a living museum. I stopped by small shops selling local crafts, souvenirs and food. Of course i did not miss the chance to try the famous Ilocos empanada crispy hot and flavorful, especially when eaten fresh. As i enjoyed my food i watched people passing by and wondered what their everyday lives were like in this beautiful historic town.

One of the things i appreciated most was the feeling of escape. Since i was working i rarely had opportunities to travel or unwind. Visiting Laoag felt like a gift to myself a break filled with learning adventure and new memories. Seeing places i had only encountered in books or on the internet felt surreal.

In the end i realized that Ilocos Norte especially Laoag is not just a place to visit but a place to experience. It offers a blend of nature history culture and food that makes it unforgettable. And because this was my first visit it became even more special. I went home carying memories of the grand church the old houses the delicious food and the comforting feeling that even in the middle of a busy working life there are still places that can bring joy and refresh the spirit.

Someday i hope to return. But for now the sweet memory of my first visit to Laoag will remain in my heart. 😉
