Good evening Dear Community,

I would like to tell you about my trip to Sintra near Lisbon. Sintra is a small town at the foot of Portugal's Sintra Mountains. The small town served as the summer residence of kings for many years, and the wooded grounds are dotted with pastel-colored mansions and palaces. The town is very easy to reach by train and it only takes 1 hour to get there. So we started at Lisbon's Rossio train station in the morning and set off on our journey. Since it was to be a day trip, we had to limit ourselves in advance to two sights and decided on the Castelo dos Mouros and the Regaleira Palace. After arriving in Sintra, we fortified ourselves with a coffee and typical local snacks before making our way to the castle.

Buenas noches querida comunidad,

The Castelo dos Mouros is the ruins of a castle complex located in the middle of the forest. The castle was built by the Moors in the 8th or 9th century and was conquered by the Portuguese King Alfonso I in 1147. During the rule of the Moors, this once powerful castle served as a defense for the entire region. In the following centuries, however, the castle was little used and fell into disrepair over time. Since the castle was built on a rocky outcrop, it offers an unobstructed view of the entire coast and the surrounding landscape. In favorable weather conditions it is even possible to see as far as Lisbon. The natural location of the ruins prompted King Ferdinand II to partially repair the fortress and establish it as a showpiece. The ruins are still located in the middle of a very quiet and picturesque landscape. A visit to the castle is worthwhile in any case, because it still offers a lot. You can explore the old battlements, climb the various defense towers and enjoy the spectacular views over the region, the Atlantic coast and the Pena Palace. Castelo dos Mouros is one of three sites that should be visited on a typical day trip to Sintra. The site is open from 9am-6pm and can be visited for 8 euros admission.

After a short break in the forest, we moved on to the second sight of the day. The Regaleira Palace (Quinta da Regaleira), this is a breathtaking aristocratic estate from the 20th century, which seems to come from a fairy tale. It was built according to the designs of the owner António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro and completed in 1910. The main building was built by an Italian architect in the style of an eccentric Portuguese occultist at the turn of the century, and seems to blend seamlessly into the landscape of the rocky hill that surrounds it, providing timed some fine examples of unconventional architecture. The entire property has a fascinating collection of mystical symbolism and a maze of tunnels beneath the park. One of the standout sites is definitely the Fountain of Dedication, this is two inverted towers that rise into the earth with spiral staircases on the outside. There are also many other structures and numerous water features in the park. When discovering the park with all its small mystical buildings, one has the feeling of being in a magical world at any time, and the place radiates an incomprehensible peace through this interplay of buildings and nature, without being bored. Much more one is curious what one can discover further.

After we had visited the park extensively, we went once again in the center of Sintra and ate dinner at the end of the day was still the journey home by train back to Lisbon and we visited the famous scene district Barrio Alto.

That was my short report about the day trip to Sintra.

Kind regards

I visited Sintra last year and found the place just so wonderful, and for reasons that escape me, I walked from the town all the way up to the Castelo dos Mouros! Exhausting, but oh so worth it, the views from up there were amazing and it is just such a stunning location to be standing in. I honestly wish to go back again once things have settled down again. Thanks for sharing!
