Sad Hill Cemetery, history of western movies in Burgos, Spain [Eng] [Esp]

Hello to all of you who like to discover and visit all the corners of the world!

In my first post in this community I talked about my express visit to the city of Burgos and today I'm going to talk about a last minute plan we made after visiting the city and stopping for lunch in a nearby town.

When we finished eating and seeing the village where the restaurant was, it was still early and my boyfriend and I remembered that the owner of the hotel where we were staying recommended us to visit the Sad Hill cemetery which was not far from the hotel. As it wasn't dark yet we wanted to take advantage of the last moment of light and went there.

It is a fictitious cemetery located in a valley between the municipality of Santo Domingo de Silos and the village of Contreras, which was the scene where the most famous scene of the movie "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", a classic western movie, was filmed.

We imagined that we could see it from far away, and that we could not enter but when we arrived to the area, there was a road that went down the valley, but it had ice slabs and we did not have chains for the wheels. We also didn't imagine that there would be snow and smell in that area.

In the end we decided to drive down very carefully, because I had forgotten my hiking shoes at the hotel and I was only wearing boots with a little heel and I could fall. The plan was not really to end up in a place so lost in the mountains.

En mi primer post en esta comunidad hablé sobre mi visita exprés a la ciudad de Burgos y hoy voy a hablar de un plan de última hora que hicimos después de visitar la ciudad y parar a comer en un pueblo cercano.

Cuando acabamos de comer y de ver el pueblo en el que estaba el restaurante, aun era pronto y mi novio y yo recordamos que el dueño del hotel donde nos alojábamos nos recomendó visitar el cementerio de Sad Hill que no quedaba muy lejos del hotel. Como aun no era de noche quisimos aprovechar hasta el último momento de luz y fuimos hacía allí.

Se trata de un cementerio ficticio que se encuentra en un valle entre el municipio de Santo Domingo de Silos y el pueblo de Contreras, el cual fue el escenario donde se rodó la escena más conocida de la película el Bueno el, feo y el malo, un clásico de las películas del oeste.

Nosotros imaginábamos que se podría ver desde lejos, y que no se podría entrar pero al llegar a la zona, había una carretera que bajaba el valle, pero tenía placas de hielo y no teníamos cadenas para las ruedas. Tampoco nos imaginamos que habría nieve y huelo por esa zona.

Al final decidimos bajar en coche con mucho cuidado, porque se me había olvidado el calzado de montaña en el hotel y solo llevaba unas botas con un poco de tacón y podría caerme. Realmente el plan no era acabar en un sitio tan perdidos en la montaña.

As we were approaching the entrance there were some wooden signs that already made reference to the movie and a silhouette of a cowboy, but I could not take a picture of it because whenever I approached there were people.

Según nos íbamos acercando a la entrada había unos carteles de madera que ya hacían referencia a la película y una silueta como de un vaquero, pero a eso no le pude hacer foto porque siempre que me acercaba había gente.

Upon entering the cemetery there were many graves with wooden crosses that looked old, with relief where the bodies are supposed to be buried. This is the first grave that caught my attention since, instead of a lump in the ground, it had stones on top of it.

Al entrar al cementerio se veían muchas tumbas con cruces de madera que se veían viejas, con relieve donde se supone que están enterrado los cuerpos. Esta es la primera tumba que me llamó la atención ya que, en vez de un bulto en la tierra, tenía piedras encima.

Almost all the tombs were the same, only some had the names of people who had passed away written on them as a remembrance and also some with ironic and funny names.

Casi todas las tumbas eran iguales, solo que en algunas habían escrito el nombre de personas que han fallecido en forma de recuerdo y también algunas con nombres irónicos y graciosos.

The crosses were placed around a circular square made of stones, which is where the famous duel of the movie "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" was filmed.

On one side of the circular square there was a leafless tree with a rope where people of the time were hanged, I thought I took a picture of that, but I don't have a picture taken with my cell phone.

Las cruces estaban puestas alrededor de una plaza circular hecha de piedras, que es donde se rodó el famoso duelo de la película el Bueno el feo y el malo.

A un lado de la plaza circular había un árbol sin hojas con una soga donde se colgaba a la gente de la época, pensaba que hice foto a eso, pero no tengo una foto hecha con mi móvil.

We walked around almost the entire cemetery looking for a different grave from the others, taking advantage of the little daylight that was left because being in a valley, the mountains began to cover the sun before.

Nos recorrimos dando un paseo casi todo el cementerio buscando alguna tumba distinta a las otras, aprovechando la poca luz del día que quedaba ya que al estar en un valle, las montañas empezaron a tapar el sol antes.

If I have to be honest I have never seen the movie, if I have seen the scene and I know the movie and little more, but even so I found it super interesting and curious, since I imagined that if a movie of the far west was shot in Spain would be used another more arid area of the south for example.

Also to think that with how difficult it was to get there by car on those mountain roads and all, it would cost them a lot to go there at that time to shoot the scene with all the equipment.

It was worth going even if it was late in the day because it was a really beautiful area lost in the mountains, a very picturesque landscape and on the other hand that there was less light also gave a darker touch in every way because it was a cemetery.

Si tengo que ser sincera nunca he visto la película, si he visto la escena y conozco la película y poco más, pero aun así me pareció super interesante y curioso, ya que me imaginaba que si se rodara una película del lejano oeste en España se usaría otra zona más árida del sur por ejemplo.

También pensar que con lo difícil que fue llegar en coche por esas carreteras de montaña y todo, les costaría muchísimo irse hasta allí en aquella época a rodar la escena con todo el equipo.

Mereció la pena ir aunque fuera a última hora del día ya que era una zona realmente bonita y perdida entre las montañas, un paisaje muy pintoresco y por otro lado que hubiera menos luz también le daba un toque más oscuro en todos los sentidos ya que se trataba de un cementerio.
