Camagüey, located in the heart of Cuba, is a city that distills history and culture. Founded in 1514, it boasts of being one of the oldest on the island. Its urban layout, intricate and labyrinthine, is a testimony of its colonial past and has led to its historic center being declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Initially known as “Santa María del Port-au-Prince,” emerged as a strategic point in the Cuban geography. Its location on the island made it a vital commercial and cultural center during the colonial era. Its senseless streets were originally designed as a defensive measure against the attacks of privateers and pirates that threatened the region. That’s why it’s very easy to get lost in their streets if you don’t know them or you don’t walk with a map.
The charm of Camagüey is manifested in its cobled streets, picturesque squares and well-preserved colonial buildings. The Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, built in the 18th century, is an architectural emblem that captures the attention of visitors with its imposing presence. In addition, the city is home to numerous churches, such as the Church of Solitude and the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, which add a sacred touch to its landscape. For this reason it is also known as the city of the Churches.
The main park, with its statue of Ignacio Agramonte, hero of Cuban independence, stands as a symbolic space and meeting point for locals and tourists. During the 19th century, Camagüey played a crucial role in the struggle for Cuba’s independence. Local heroes stood out in the war against Spanish rule. The city intensely experienced the vicissitudes of that conflict that marked Cuban history. In Ignacio Agramonte Park, the lush gardens and cozy benches offer a quiet refuge for those who wish to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Because of this historical figure so important for this city, sometimes the Camagueyans are called agramontinos.
The title of “The city of the Tinajones” is due to the artisanal tradition of Camagüey and is manifested in its potters, whose skills have been passed down from generation to generation. The tinajones, large clay vessels that decorate the squares and courtyards, are emblematic of this region. The artisans also make ceramics, fabrics and other crafts that reflect the cultural identity of the city. I would say that this art is a stamp of the City of Camagüey.
The rich artistic and cultural scene is manifested in the Ballet de Camagüey, recognized nationally and internationally. Dance, music and theater are an integral part of everyday life, highlighting the passion and artistic talent that flourishes in the community.
During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Camagüey experienced an economic flowering thanks to livestock and agriculture. Its extensive plains were ideal for livestock breeding, and the city became an important center for the collection and distribution of agricultural products. Camagueyana gastronomy, influenced by the fusion of African, Spanish and Creole traditions, offers authentic flavors. Local dishes, such as ajiaco, oriental congrí and roasted pork, delight the palates of those who explore the city.
Camagüey shouts Cuban in all its corners, it is a city that cannot be visited in a single day, its boulevards, its streets, its very friendly people and with an amazing Spanish speech captivate you. Its history is impressive and you can find the flag of Cuba in every corner of this city. It is a very unpolitical and very historical place, the regionality that characterized it in the time of war is still noticeable. A city that I definitely recommend and I invite you to know the history, culture and beauty of this one that for me is one of the best cities in Cuba.
