The National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana is one of the most important cultural institutions in Cuba and the Caribbean. Founded in 1913, the museum houses an impressive collection of Cuban and international art, ranging from antiquity to contemporaneity. The museum is divided into two large buildings: the Palace of Fine Arts, dedicated to Cuban art, and the Universal Art Building, which focuses on the art of other countries and eras, and which I will show you in this post.
The Universal Art Building is located in Old Havana, in front of the central park, and occupies a majestic rationalist-style construction dating from 1954. As soon as you enter you find a famous stained glass window that I would say steals all the attention of this museum. This building was originally the headquarters of the Asturian Center of Havana, a cultural and charitable society of Asturian immigrants in Cuba. In the 1990s, the building was restored and adapted to house the museum’s universal art collections.
The collection of the Universal Art Building is diverse and extensive, with works that represent different eras, styles and cultures. Among the most outstanding pieces are classic Greek and Roman sculptures, Renaissance and Baroque paintings, as well as works by European masters such as El Greco, Rubens, Goya, and impressionist artists such as Monet and Renoir. African, Asian and Latin American works of art can also be found, which offers visitors a global view of the history of art. On this occasion only the Italian and British art room was open, because the others were under repair, but I have visited it on other occasions and I recommend your visit.

In addition to its permanent collections, the Universal Art Building hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events that enrich Havana’s cultural offer. The museum also has educational programs and activities for various audiences, which makes it a dynamic and accessible space for all those interested in art and culture.
This universal art palace is an enriching experience that allows you to appreciate the diversity of the world’s artistic heritage in the vibrant cultural context of Havana. Without a doubt a wonderful place that you cannot miss if you are a lover of universal art, one more jewel of this wonderful Cuban capital, which with your eyes closed I invite you to meet.
