Revisiting a bush from my childhood

in Worldmappin3 months ago (edited)

I am currently on holiday and I am house sitting at my parents place while they are away. They live in a small town of New Zealand called Patumahoe.

Pepper

Pepper is my parents cat. This year my parents shifted into a new home in the same area and Pepper is still getting acclimatized. She is nearly 16 years old and gets lonely if no one is at home. We were worried that she may wander off if no one was around for a long time. Pepper is the main reason why I am staying at my parents. She needs to be fed and I enjoy her company. She sleeps on the end of my bed at night. Although my parents would rather keep her in the garage at night 😂

Henry's Scenic Reserve

Is a small area of native bush that is wedged between farmland in Patumahoe. Locals will often refer to this place as 'Hunters Bush' as it sits next to Hunter Road.

The Stream

The stream runs under the road.

When they built the road they put in two large concrete pipes to maintain the existing path of the stream. As you can see there is not much water coming through as there has been little rain. However, the water does pool at the top and drop off at a steep velocity creating a water fall.

The Walk

The walk down has a rather ominous feel to it. It gets dark with the overarching tree's smothering out much of the light which is trying to break through.

I am standing at the bottom and looking back up to the start of the track. There are many large boulders scattered around. I can imagine that long ago these boulders were blasted out of a volcano and scattered across the countryside.

This video I took shows many trees that have come down and fallen across the stream. I always find it quite exhilarating being amongst nature and the rush of water.

Fallen tree

I remember coming here as a youngster on a school trip. We walked where that tree was and along a path that is now washed out. There was a wooden platform that I used to stand on and lookout. Lucky no one was on it when the tree and path got washed away.

If you ever are out this way it is a nice short walk through native bush. The boulders look really cool and the rush of water cascading over rocks and fallen trees are visually appeasing and create a relaxing soundscape.

I hope you enjoyed.
