John Lennon Wall in Prague, Czech Republik

in Worldmappin2 years ago

Hello guys,

The last few days I was in Prague and one cool place that I've been visiting was John Lennon Wall.
I liked it. The idea of it. The colors. What it represents.

I'm happy we got a bright sunny day and walked around the city, visiting all the major tourist objectives.

Lennon Wall in Prague is a symbol of freedom.

It has a very interesting history, I've read about it and I invite you do the same, in case you want to know more about.

...the only place in the entire city where graffiti is deemed legal, this wall is a significant political and historical symbol. [source]

The wall is located in Praha 1, most central district in Prague, Mala Strana.

Also, John Lennon Wall is just a few steps from Charles Bridge, one of the most representative constructions in Prague.

The area here is super nice. I enjoyed this part of the city. We came on foot from Praga Castle. We enjoyed our walking.

And I can truly say that Praga is TOP favorite cities so far...I consider it being a clean one and the transportation comes in hand. You have bus, tram or subway to chose from. They all are very efficient organized.

We didnt use the car to visit the city. The car was left at the hotel. We walked and most of the time, we used public transportation, which is the best you can do here.

As I've read it, Lennon Wall in Prague was repainted several times until present, always being in change.

Here I leave you some documented info.

The wall had been decorated by love poems and short messages against the regime since 1960s. It received its first decoration connected to John Lennon—a symbol of freedom, western culture, and political struggle—following the 1980 assassination of John Lennon when an unknown artist painted a single image of the singer-songwriter and some lyrics. [source here]

What does the wall symbolise?

QuoteSome say that this wall is Prague’s equivalent of the Berlin Wall, in terms of it’s significance. With inspiring lyrics and positive messages plastered all over it, the wall undoubtedly symbolises freedom, free speech, peace and resistance against Communism.

The wall was originally known as the ‘Crying Wall’, where people would come and out pour their frustrations with government and authority. During the Communism era, western pop songs such as the ones sung by The Beatles were actually banned – and people would even be imprisoned for playing them. The music spearheaded by John Lennon represented freedom and it captured the imagination of Prague’s youth. So, the name for the wall arose after John Lennon’s death in 1980, when people came in their droves here to mourn his death and celebrate all that he stood for. The widow of John Lennon, Yoko Ono even visited the wall in 2003. [source here]

I loved these vibrant colors.

I've been looking into it, seeing how it looked before. There are many versions until present and I think it was beautiful before as well. It matters what it means and what gave people. Meaning a place where they would come and leave their thoughts or worries. It symbolizes a deep meaning and value to people, especially in the past.

Overall, it is an amazing peace of art in the heart of Prague, Czech Republik.

Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoy it! 💛

You wouldn't be the first to say Prague is the TOP cities. Heard so many people say the same and I'm starting to believe it. Need to go there myself. As good of a photographer as you are, I bet the real thing was much better. Nice and sunny day to compliment the soft colors of the city.
And then bam, the incredibly intense Lennon wall. Never knew it was of so much importance (thanks for adding the links 😉)

Let me know when you make it here ;) (to Prague)

It is on my bucket list. But first need to "settle down" before I go around.

Hi there! I am not a good photographer haha, not even close. But indeed the real thing was a lot more than we can see in the photos.

I didnt know much myselg about this wall until the moment I knew I'll go visit Prague. Usually thats the moment I do my research and see what yo visit in the area I am.

I didnt know how beautiful Prague is. I didnt imagine, ever. But after this small trip and being able to visit the major parts of the city, I can say for sure its a gem of European capital cities. And I didnt see enough. I want to go in summer sometimes. I know I'll enjoy it.

Thank you for commenting, appreciate it! Sending greetings your way!

In my opinion, the city of Prague in Europe is among the historical cities that can be visited. here it will always take you to ancient times

You're definitely right! I didnt visit all big cities in Europe but compared with what I've visited until now, this is TOP!
Thank you so much for stopping by and comenting!

Prague is a destination! I can tell from what you wrote that you loved it, and I loved what I saw in your photos. I was amazed by the river running through the houses, it looks like some kind of Venice! I saw how neat and clean the town is and I'm amazed that it's not crowded, I've read that there are a lot of tourists, but that's probably mostly in summer. I also noticed that there are some roofs with eyes, like in Sibiu!
John Lennon was my favorite singer and songwriter and I'm glad there is such a place where he is celebrated. One piece of information about the wall surprised me. I was surprised to learn that Beatles songs were banned in Czechoslovakia, where I understand there was a softer communism, while in Romania this did not happen (i.e. banning these songs). The only song with problems was Back In The U.S.S.R, after the Russian occupation of Czechoslovakia. They probably also refer to this song as the time after the Russian invasion in 1968.

Great presentation, I think I know more about Prague now and look forward to seeing more!

Prague can be a lot, talking about the type of destination. Everything you think of, its there. If you want quiet time and outdoors, there are a lot of parks. If you want history, there are dozens of historical places or buildings to visit. If you want to take a walk on the river, is just 13€ apart. If you want to enjoy a nice view and a drink, a coffee or whatever, there are beautiful terraces all over the city. If you want to eat local, there are some restaurants that serve mostly czech food recipes. And so on..the list continues.

Yes, I really loved Prague. It wasnt busy, but neither too "airy". It was exactly as you can imagine for being an european capital city in Central Europa.

I didnt know John Lennon music is your fav, now I do! I'm glad you liked my post, I hope I can share with you the other places I've visited here soon enough.

You have convinced me, of course, that it is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and is accessible to us, the Romanians. I, when I was of your age, I was very much a cinephile, from about 16 to the age of 30 I can say I "ate movies on bread". That was in the years 1970-1985...when we had no resources to travel but we were not allowed to leave the country either. Movies were the only way to see places, cities, and ways of life in other countries. The cinema of Eastern European countries was an important and valuable cinema and the Czech (Czechoslovak) cinema was special. Jiri Menzel was one of the most important directors, he was also my favorite... What I mean. I have seen in films, behind the action, in the background, a lot of footage of cities, in this case, Prague. That made me want to visit this city, just like I wanted to visit London, Paris, or Rome, also because of the movies.
The funny thing is that after I came out of communism this desire to travel decreased. I got older, I had to work a lot, I got tired and I wanted to relax by the sea during my holidays.

I understand your pleasure in visiting such a city and I would certainly enjoy it too. I'm glad you can travel to such places, I'm glad you're going to write about it because I'll benefit from it too, thanks!
We need to access all the joys and beauties of life, as much as each of us can, of course!

You wrote it so beautiful!
Thanks for sharing this with me! Also thanks for your kind words. Appreciate all of your comment!

Btw, we are also cinephiles, but with movies from our times. Me and my husband have seen together I think....around 800-900 movies only in the cinema. Not to mention the ones at home, the old ones..
I have had (and still have) but I didnt continue with it, a collection of movies we saw together at cinema, starting since nov.2010 when we first started dating.
And by the time of 2016,2017 something like that we had around 600 tickets. I wonder what number would have been now...I know that in 2019 things got slower going to the cinema as we had our baby coming, but when the grannies took our baby boy, we go (went) straight to the movie. That is where we feel comfortable and relaxed.

So..once ..I loved to read what you wrote. I can only imagine how it was...that time for you.

I apologize for the so late response, @missdeli! I took a trip to the place where I grew up. I was lucky enough to grow up in the country, in the north of Moldova, in Falticeni. I had a beautiful childhood.

Impressive how many films you've seen. It's ideal to have shared passions with your life partner, in fact, that's where the good, enjoyable life comes from... happiness!

Something strange happened to me... Everything that's abundant now was just a dream in the past. Movies, theater, books, magazines, music, travel... Everything I used to get gave me immense pleasure but now I can only think it was all amplified by lack. After having freedom and access to so much my interest waned, I think also because of the internet which gave me information and easy access to everything I wanted.

In terms of film, I was self-taught. I saw so many films, of all genres, that taste and understanding came gradually. At first, I was drawn to the image of the film, I also liked photography, then I started to understand filmmaking, my favorite directors and films. I knew which films were valuable but I didn't know how to explain why.

I think you too have formed your eye with all the films you've seen, you recognize the value after the first images, after the first few minutes of watching. I'm so glad you're a cinephile, that your family is cinephiles... I know your son will be, just as my son has become.

Thank you for liking to read what I write, I have to say I like your writing too and I'm glad I can always read from your older posts.

That upvote was for Jiří Menzel, we love his films here ;)

Greetings from Prague!

I was fascinated by Closely Watched Trains, but it's been over 50 years since I've seen it. I don't really know much about films after 2000. Thanks so much for the support!

Closely Watched Trains is a classic, amazing film. I think our cinematography has been pretty good even after 2000, there have been quite a lot of aspiring young directors here who have made some interesting films :)

Sorry to reply so late, @phortun, I was away on a trip.
I know Czech cinema is good and I think I've seen a few more recent films and really need to find out more.

It is a very stately and beautiful city, with a great architectural attraction and a magnificent preservation of its culture and history. Good pictures and greetings !

I think you said it all with only these few words! I find the city beautiful too, with great great architectural structures.

Thank you for stopping by and greetings for you too, from Romania!

A-ma-zing place to explore. really envy you.... will never get there myself, sadly.
ps. extra thanks for the last foto, I always love to see the faces
some hot hive !PIZZA?

Haha no need to thank me! I was actually happy sharing it, why not? I dont take selfies very often, believe me! This was a good one, I think.

About Prague, you'll never know. You can't really predict what will happen in the future right?....

Thanks for the pizza! I always enjoy a pizza, dont you worry!

ehehe... well, I cant predict but I can extrapolate ;)
back in 2009, there was a case when I needed to vizit Poznan and Prague (for some personal hobby stuff), it turned out to be a little quest for visas, certificates, hostel reservations and all that sort of things... In brief, I managed only visit Warsaw and Poznan, and only for a week... Adding Prague and Krakow to my route (the old capital of Poland was something I really dreamed to see as well) was completely out of the question. It's hard even to choose what I was missing more: time or money :)))
All in all: lucky you!
!PIZZA

I see....I also want to add here that chances to go back in the same place or area, far away from home, are pretty much zero.
Manu of us tend to visit other places than before, especially if they are hundreds/thousands km apart...

I want to be back in Prague in summer, sometimes in this life. And I hope that all roads will take me there again someday.

That is, Prague is a bit easier thing for you, as the EC citizen :P
not like Melbourne or Tokyo or Montreal, lets put it so
😜
wish you and your baby well

Ahh yeah. Sorry, my bad. I didnt consider that, although you mentioned it. It wasnt clear for me.

Yeah, you're right..now I got your point. 😁😁😁

Late time in here, my brain is tired. 😁😅

sweet dreams, then 🐝🐝🐝

I like the wall too!! Very bright and expressive. In my place there is no such walls, just separate graffities. And I like you, Beauty!🌟😉

Thanks so much! Both for your lovely comment and for the compliment haha. 💙💙

You have shared so many pictures that you wondered which of the pictures I should look at.

I didnt take as many photos I wanted to 🤣🤣. But thanks, appreciate it!

I like cities with rivers running between the streets.

I hear you! I love those too! Ljublianja and Budapest are also beautiful!

Amazing wall art! The symbolism behind it is also something wonderful.

It is indeed. I totally agree here with you, what it means makes it so special! Thanks so much for stopping by! ❤
