We chose this city by chance for our afternoon and night rest while travelling through France. We had never been to Nîmes or heard much about the city, however, we were pleasantly surprised by the history that greeted us. After I met this cat, took a shower, and rested in the hotel room, we went for a walk around the city centre.
I wore sandals instead of sneakers because it was warm. After the information I saw in a magazine about this city that I took from the hotel, I found out that this city is called French Rome. And the Romans wore sandals, right? There, I fit the surroundings.
The first landmark we visited was one of those Roman buildings which is authentic and very well preserved. Les Arénes.
Wow, what thick stone walls, I couldn't believe that I was seeing before me this amphitheatre where gladiator fights were held two thousand years ago. Nowadays, shows and theatres are still held as well as bullfights.
Unfortunately, I don't understand much of this text written in French, but I read in English translation in the tourist magazine that this arena is one of the best preserved in the world. It was built in the 1st century AD.
I am not a huge fan of bullfights and even less of those gladiator fights where they had to fight for their lives in front of the audience... to entertain others...? But that was popular in those times, and according to a legend, Emperor Augustus visited the Arena of Nîmes to meet a famous gladiator.
Now, a toreador stands here in front of the amphitheatre.
I will leave this here and have just peaceful thoughts. I don't need to see the blood of other people or bulls to have fun, but seeing monuments is already better.
When travelling with another Hiver, it is always a challenge to be the first to take a photo of something...
You see! 😆
So, these I leave for him but there were plenty of other things to see in Nîmes. Monuments to heroes, fountains, squares, churches, narrow streets full of terraces, little shops and balconies.
I love cathedrals so we set in the navigation to find it in Nîmes. We found it but we had no luck to see its facade, it was under restoration works.
From here, we continued through the narrow streets. The restaurants were prepared to receive the customers for dinner.
Our last stop was another Roman building, called La Maison Carrée. It is a Roman temple, supposed to be the best-preserved temple from the Roman times in the world! So happy that I could see this building in real, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023.
The building has six columns on the front and ten on the sides - eight of them are integrated into the walls. I found it amazing but I don't know a lot about this type of architecture. Luckily, we can all read about it in different places, for example here.
Well, those who can read French can try to see the info from this board that can be found in front of the building. :)
After seeing this awesome piece of history we headed back to our accommodation. Just right before we reached the hotel, my left sandal broke. 😂 With a little engineering and improvisation I managed to walk in it until the hotel.
It was definitely an unforgettable visit to Nîmes because of this little detail and of course, because of the perfectly preserved buildings from the Roman times.
Thank you, an interesting walk through the city of Nimes. Honestly, I hadn't heard about that city and the well preserved Roman architecture there. And other more contemporary architecture very nice too.
About other architecture, now when you say I wanted to mention that there were some new, modern buildings in front of these old ones, all in glass - they gave a great contrasting element. ;)
I would visit for the table cat alone... but the sightseeing seems alright there, too ;)
In the combination with that fluffy cat, it was a perfect stay ☺️
Oh, a friend of mine is from there, or rather from a village nearby. I experienced my first run with bulls there few years ago ;) In the village, not in Nimes.
I see you luckily survived the run with the bulls. Hopefully we all experience a bull run too, another type though 😁
Sometimes, even a guiri has good luck ;)
Gee, I didn't know about this city at all, at least I don't remember having seen anything about it before... It's got that little Roman amphitheatre almost intact, geez!.... There's a lot of art and history in that place, this is a lovely post.... And very well illustrated with excellent photos...
Hummm, seeing this, I remembered my late Father, he was a bullfighting fanatic, he even became an apprentice bullfighter in his younger years... When I was 6 or 7 years old I was taken to my first (and last) bullfight... I cried a lot and they had to carry me out of there in the arms of my godfather, as Dad decided to continue watching the spectacle!... :( That was a marked difference between me and my father, and it ended up widening when I became a vegetarian at 22! :/ ... He said I wouldn't survive for three months without eating meat! hehehe :)) ... Fortunately I'm still here... Dad and I agreed on our passion for painting, photography, poem, pets and nature.... But we differed in his love for boxing, horse riding and of course bullfighting... Sometimes it was difficult to get along...
PS: Today I noticed that I wasn't following your account on #Hive, I don't know if it was that I stopped following because of a "finger mistake" or if I just always had you in my "favourites list" which now doesn't work properly in Peakd... Well, anyway, I always see your posts in the "top trending" feed (congratulations for that!) and now I've started to follow your account so I don't miss anything!....
Regards and hugs @mipiano friend!... Have a great weekend!

Bullfighting is also a huge topic in Spain, you know there are people who find it a part of tradition and those who are against it. Spain is the country I have chosen to live in, not my native country so I can't really connect with the bullfighting but I respect those who identify with that tradition.
Haha, don't worry, I was also having the same feeling when, back in time, I realized I was not following you, I was shocked but then I corrected that hahaha. Sometimes it happens that people accidentally unfollow someone. Also, there were users who decided not to follow anymore my account - all good. 😉
Thank you for your words, saludos y espero las fotos de los owls 😁🦉
:)) Ah! The owls!... I'm thinking about it!... I'll have to go out in the evening and dust off my old hot shoe flash!... I hope it works!!!! ... Here in the countryside there is an old sugar cane processing plant that has a tower of cobblestones about 30 metres high, I've been told that owls can be seen there!.... But there is a drawback: The current owner of that land is one of my old high school classmates with whom I had a fist fight a dozen times back then!... hahaha! :)) We hardly greet each other in the street when we see each other!... What a coincidence! :)) I think I'd better go to the forest at night!:))
Oops. Don't get into troubles because of the owls. Forest is the less dangerous option then 😜
Old but fine city. It seem to be a quiet place too! Thank for been me tourist girl..
