Valencia Tram | El Tranvía de Valencia, Venezuela (ENG/ESP)

A few weeks ago, my family and I were invited to a birthday party. To our surprise, it wasn't just any birthday party. It was a kind of cultural birthday celebration.

We were going to celebrate it aboard the Valencia Tram. A wooden and steel tram that immediately transports you to bygone decades, where for a modest price, you are taken to many of Valencia's historical and cultural spots.

Hace unas semanas, nos invitaron a un cumpleaños a mi familia y a mí. Para nuestra sorpresa, no era cualquier cumpleaños. Era una especie de cumpleaños cultural.
Lo íbamos a celebrar a bordo del Tranvía de Valencia. Un tranvía de madera y acero que te transporta de inmediato a décadas otroras, donde por un módico precio te llevan por muchos de los puntos históricos y culturales de Valencia.
Nos comentaron que tienen disponibles varias rutas interesantes. La ruta que nosotros hicimos ese día fue alrededor del centro de Valencia, donde visitamos casas y mansiones coloniales, tascas emblemáticas de la ciudad y demás puntos históricos hermosos e importantes.

We were told that several interesting routes are available. The route we took that day was around the center of Valencia, where we visited colonial houses and mansions, iconic taverns of the city, and other beautiful and important historical points.

We departed from the Lidotel Hotel in Valencia, and from the moment you board the tram, the magic begins. The seats and the entire frame are made of wood, and the driver and historical guide welcomed us with a smile and the characteristic tram bell.

The sound of the bell, which hangs beside the first front seat, alerts everyone that the tram is coming.

I took this tour a few weeks ago, and honestly, I've forgotten some historical details. But I'll do my best to tell you what we experienced that day at the different stops:

Salimos desde el Hotel Lidotel en Valencia, y desde que te subes al tranvía, empieza la magia. Los asientos y todo el armazón es de madera, el conductor y el guía histórico nos recibieron con una sonrisa y con la característica campanada del tranvía.
El sonido de la campana, que cuelga a un lado del primer asiento delantero, alerta a todo el mundo que ahí viene el tranvía.
Este recorrido lo hice hace unas cuantas semanas, y honestamente he olvidado algunos detalles históricos. Pero haré mi mejor esfuerzo por contarles lo que vivimos ese día en las diferentes paradas:

1. Quinta La Isabela

Our first stop was at Quinta La Isabela, an iconic mansion that has passed through the hands of different important people and families of Valencia. The fact that caught my attention the most is that it is called "La Isabela" because that was the name of the first owner's mother.
We were told that Isabela used to go out to the main balcony to enjoy the evening, sometimes taking a cup of coffee or tea. Unsurprisingly, people who have visited the house say they have seen the lady on her balcony and that there is a strange energy in the house.
This mansion is also called El Palacio de los Iturriza (Palace of the Iturriza), as it was Mr. Iturriza who ordered the construction of the house in 1877, intending it to be just a summer house. This palace has a French-style finish, built with materials brought directly from Europe.

Nuestra primera parada fue en la Quinta La Isabela, una emblemática mansión que ha pasado por manos de diferentes personas y familias importantes de Valencia. El dato que más me llamó la atención, es que se llama "La Isabela" debido a que así se llamaba la madre del primer dueño.
Nos contaron que Isabela salía al balcón principal a ver la tarde, en el que a veces disfrutaba de una taza de café o té. Como no es sorpresivo, personas que han visitado la casa dicen que han visto a la señora en su balcón, y que se siente una energía extraña en la casa.
A esta quinta también se le llama Palacio de Los Iturriza, ya que fue el señor de la familia Iturriza quien en 1877 ordenó la construcción de la casa, con el propósito de ser simplemente una casa de verano. Este palacio tiene un acabado francesado, que fue levantado con materiales traídos directamente desde Europa.

La Quinta fell into decay and neglect for several years, just like the rest of the country. However, several municipal ordinances have gradually restored La Quinta, as it is definitely a cultural heritage of the State of Carabobo.
Currently, it functions as a Masonic cult in Carabobo, where adherents to these customs carry out their activities. In fact, in front of the House, you can see a small statue with Masonic symbols, such as the square.
Unfortunately, the entrance to La Quinta is not always available, which is why we couldn't see it from the inside.

La Quinta cayó en la decadencia y descuido por varios años, igual que el resto del país. Sin embargo, varias ordenanzas municipales han restaurado poco a poco la Quinta, debido a que es definitivamente patrimonio cultural del Estado Carabobo.
Actualmente, funciona como un culto de la masonería en Carabobo, donde adeptos a estas costumbres realizan sus actividades. De hecho, frente a la Casa, se puede ver una pequeña estatua con símbolos masones, como la escuadra.
La entrada a la Quinta no está siempre disponible, lamentablemente, razón por la cual no pudimos conocerla por dentro.

2. Liceo Pedro Gual

We quickly passed by this high school, which in its time, more than 80 years ago, was a prestigious educational institution from which important political, academic, and military figures of the country graduated. Today, the blows this place has suffered are noticeable, and how it has been a scene and witness to multiple canonical events on Bolívar Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares of Valencia.

Pasamos rápidamente por este liceo que en su época, hace más de 80 años, fue una casa de estudio prestigiosa de donde salieron importantes figuras políticas, académicas y militares para el país. Hoy día, es notorio los golpes que ha sufrido este lugar y cómo ha sido escenario y testigo de los múltiples eventos canónicos en la avenida Bolívar, una de las principales arterias viales de Valencia.

3. Hotel Palace

Whenever I passed by this hotel, I was surprised by how beautiful it looked from the outside. I had never entered, much less expected that this current hotel hid so many stories within its walls.
It turns out that this building was not intended as a hotel but was the "modest" home of important military figures of Valencia. It was, indeed, an immense and beautiful mansion.
Much of the original structure is still preserved, evidently renovated.
Many stories were told to us about this place that day; however, one in particular I remember:
The then owner of the mansion, who was a cousin of General and Dictator Juan Vicente Gómez (former president of Venezuela), had found his wife with another man in one of the rooms.

Siempre que pasaba al lado de este hotel, me sorprendía lo bonito que se veía desde fuera. Nunca había entrado, ni mucho menos esperaba que este actual hotel escondiera tantas historias entre sus muros.
Resulta que esta edificación no fue intencionada como un hotel, sino que era el "recatado" hogar de importantes figuras militares de Valencia. Era, realmente, una mansión inmensa y preciosa.
Se conserva actualmente gran parte de la estructura original, evidentemente renovada.
Muchas historias nos contaron de este lugar ese día, sin embargo, una en particular recuerdo:
El entonces señor de la mansión, quien era primo del General y Dictador Juan Vicente Gómez (ex presidente de Venezuela), había conseguido a su mujer con otro hombre en una de las habitaciones.

To punish her, he tied her to a horse, and it ran with her body dragged behind its hooves all along Camoruco Avenue (now Bolívar Avenue). Evidently, the poor woman did not survive and was left completely disfigured.
A distant relative of the guide who told us this story witnessed the event. He said that the sound of the woman's screams and the strong galloping of the horse were something he could never forget.
It seems that dictatorial behavior was intrinsic to the Gómez family.

Para darle castigo, la ató a un caballo y este corrió azotado con el cuerpo de ella tras sus patas, por toda la avenida Camoruco (actual avenida Bolívar). Evidentemente, la pobre mujer no sobrevivió y quedó totalmente desfigurada.
Un familiar lejano del guía que nos contó esto, atestiguó dicho evento. Dijo que el ruido de los gritos de la mujer y el fuerte galopar del caballo, fueron algo que nunca pudo olvidar.
Parece que el comportamiento dictatorial era intrínseco de la familia Gómez.

4. Posada La Pastora

This stop was my favorite. We arrived at a beautiful inn that had also been a colonial house of an important family in downtown Valencia. We were warmly welcomed by a lovely lady who, to my surprise, was not Venezuelan by birth but by heart, as she put it. The lady, born in Cartagena, spoke to us about the history of the house with such love, service, respect, and joy that I was very surprised to hear she was not Venezuelan.
She told us several interesting things, for example:
Part of the walls are intentionally half-painted to preserve the original paint of the house, which has never been retouched.
The house, now an inn, has high and spacious ceilings, originally designed so that the horses on which the gentlemen arrived could easily enter the living room.

Esta parada fue la que más me gustó. Llegamos a una posada bellísima que antes también había sido casa colonial de una importante familia en el centro de Valencia. En este lugar nos recibieron con una grata bienvenida de una señora hermosa que, para mi sorpresa, no es venezolana de nacimiento pero sí de corazón, en sus palabras. La señora, nacida en Cartagena, nos hablaba sobre la historia de la casa con tal amor, servicio, respeto y alegría que me sorprendió mucho saber que no era venezolana.
Nos contó varias cosas interesantes, por ejemplo:
Parte de las paredes están pintadas a medias a propósito, con el fin de conservar la pintura original de la casa, que jamás se ha retocado.
La casa, actualmente posada, es de techos altos y amplios, esto con el antiguo propósito de que los caballos en los que llegaban los caballeros, pudiesen entrar con facilidad a la sala.

To keep the cultural heritage alive, they display original blocks of the house at one of the entrances, which have the amusing imprints of chicken and horse footprints that passed through there.
The whole house exudes a sense of respect and peace, as one of its features is that it is fully integrated with nature. For example, inside the house is the patio, and yes, it sounds strange, but the immense plants and trees are integrated into the common area of the rooms.
It is a lovely option to visit if you are walking through downtown Valencia and want to have a drink. In the words of our Cartagenian host, you can enter and enjoy the space at no cost. Of course, with respect.

Con el propósito de mantener vivo el aservo cultural, exponen en una de las entradas bloques originales de la casa, que tienen impresos las divertidas siluetas de alguna pisada de gallinas y caballos que pasaron por allí.
Toda la casa transmite una sensación de respeto y paz, puesto que una de sus características es que está totalmente integrada con la naturaleza. Por ejemplo, dentro de la casa está el patio, y sí, suena extraño, pero es que las plantas y árboles inmensos están integrados dentro del área común de las habitaciones.
Es una linda opción para visitar si andas caminando por el centro de Valencia y deseas tomarte algo. En palabras de nuestra cartagenera, puedes entrar sin costo alguno a disfrutar del espacio. Eso sí, con respeto.

5. La Guairita

Our last stop was at La Guairita, a tavern/bar where as soon as you enter, you feel like you've traveled back in time. From the music, the atmosphere, the number of pictures and photos of popular figures and singers from other times, the whole experience makes you feel like you're in another era.

Here, we were welcomed with fried sardines. My goodness, what a delicious treat.
I'm not really a big fan of sardines, but adding a few drops of lemon, eating them with your fingers with an old fan in front of you doing its best to cool the hot place, and having La Billo's Caracas Boys playing in the background on some speakers... a ten out of ten experience.

Nuestra última parada fue en La Guairita, una tasca/bar que apenas entras y sientes que viajaste en el tiempo. Desde la música, el ambiente, la cantidad de cuadros y fotos de personajes y cantantes populares en otros tiempos, toda la experiencia te hace sentir en otra época.
Aquí, nos recibieron con sardinas fritas. Dios mío, qué vaina tan sabrosa.
Yo realmente no soy muy fan de la sardina, pero el echarle gotitas de limón, comértelas con los dedos con un ventilador viejo de frente que hacía su mejor esfuerzo para refrescar el caluroso lugar, y tener a La Billo's Caracas Boys de fondo en unas cornetas... experiencia diez de diez.

It was a funny scene because that day I dressed up, as I was told we were going to a birthday party and I knew nothing about the tram: I wore a fresh but delicate dress, walked in platform shoes, did my best makeup that day, and even styled my hair a bit. But by that time, around 7 PM, after walking and walking through downtown Valencia, with that Valencian heat and the hot fervor of the people around me singing happy birthday in La Guairita, it was obvious that my dress was already uncomfortable, my makeup was sweating, and my hairstyle was more of a mess. Definitely not the best outfit choice for being in La Guairita.

But still, I enjoyed every one of my sardines. I licked my fingers with great pleasure and no class at all.

Era una escena graciosa porque yo ese día me arreglé, ya que se me dijo que iríamos a un cumpleaños y yo no sabía nada del tranvía: me estrené un vestido fresco pero delicado, caminaba en plataformas y me había hecho mi mejor maquillaje ese día, además, me medio había arreglado el cabello. Pero ya para esa hora, a eso de las 7 PM, luego de caminar y caminar por el centro de Valencia, con ese calor valenciano y el caluroso furor de la gente a mi alrededor cantando cumpleaños en La Guairita, era obvio que mi vestido ya incomodaba, mi maquillaje sudaba y mi peinado era más un despeinado. Definitivamente no fue la mejor decisión de atuendo para estar en La Guairita.
Pero eso sí, me disfruté cada una de mis sardinas. Me chupé los dedos con mucho gusto y nada de clase.

After that, we got back on the tram and returned to the point where we had started.

Overall, it was an interesting and enriching experience.

I must make a personal note: throughout the tour, I felt a lot of contrast between our experience on the tram and the reality in downtown Valencia. We were enjoying that afternoon and visiting very beautiful places, but it is necessary to clarify that much of downtown Valencia is very neglected. It was impossible to ignore that a place that was so beautiful and well-kept before is now full of garbage in many of its streets, abandoned old buildings and houses, very lonely streets, and of course, some places in the center are not very safe.

Luego de allí, nos subimos de nuevo al tranvía y volvimos al punto de donde habíamos salido.
En definitiva, es una experiencia interesante y enriquecedora.
Debo hacer una acotación personal: a lo largo del recorrido, sentí mucho contraste entre nuestra experiencia en el tranvía y la realidad en el centro de Valencia. Nosotros estábamos disfrutando de esa tarde y recorriendo sitios muy lindos, sin embargo, es necesario aclarar que mucho del centro de Valencia está muy descuidado. Era imposible ignorar que un sitio que era tan bonito y cuidado antes, hoy día está lleno de basura en muchas de sus calles, edificios y casas antiguas abandonadas, calles muy solas, y por supuesto, algunos sitios en el centro no son muy seguros.

But as always, Venezuelans try to move forward despite the difficulties.
Really, it is an experience worth having, with the purpose of preserving that cultural heritage that belongs to us, and that even helps us to love more those places that so much need our help.

As the saying goes: those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it.

Pero como siempre, el venezolano intenta seguir adelante a pesar de las dificultades.
Realmente, es una experiencia que vale la pena, con el propósito de preservar ese patrimonio cultural que nos pertenece, y que incluso nos ayuda a amar más esos lugares que tanto necesitan de nuestra ayuda.
Tal como dice el dicho: quien no conoce su historia, está condenado a repetirla.
