A Spontaneous Adventure to Pier 88, Liloan

The afternoon sun cast long shadows as Kate, Evita, and I emerged from our Japanese class. It was a typical Tuesday, unremarkable until the impulsive suggestion: "Let's go to Pier 88 in Liloan!" The idea, born from a whim, quickly took hold. We’d seen pictures; vibrant, bustling scenes of a lively pier, promising a fun evening. We envisioned a quick trip, a brief escape before the late-night homework beckoned. Little did we know that our casual plan would morph into a far more memorable, and slightly chaotic, adventure.

The initial optimism waned as we glanced at the clock – 8:20 PM. A quick trip was now a distant fantasy. Still, the excitement outweighed any apprehension. We piled into a Grab car, the city lights blurring into streaks of color as we headed towards Liloan.

Passing by a familiar landmark, the Jollibee, brought a wave of nostalgia. The golden arches were a stark reminder of my time working at CIJ just last August, a period filled with both fond memories and the occasional stress.

The sight of the restaurant served as a poignant reminder of the contrast between my past and the uncertain adventure ahead. We didn't stop; our focus was firmly set on Pier 88.

Our initial attempts to locate Pier 88 were less than successful. Google Maps, our digital compass, led us down a narrow, dimly lit alley. The air hung heavy with the scent of damp earth and something vaguely floral. We walked past houses, their windows dark and silent, the only sound the rhythmic chirping of crickets. Finally, we stumbled upon the back of the Liloan church, its imposing silhouette a stark contrast to the narrow alley. A kind guard, noticing our perplexed expressions, pointed us in the right direction – the pier entrance was on the opposite side of the church, much farther than we anticipated.

The initial section of the pier was a far cry from the lively scenes we'd seen in pictures. It was quiet, almost deserted, the only illumination coming from the distant streetlights. Disappointment threatened to creep in, but we pressed on, our curiosity outweighing our initial letdown. And then, we found it. A vibrant, bustling section of the pier, alive with the sounds of laughter, music, and the tantalizing aroma of street food. It wasn't the entire pier, but it was a lively microcosm of the festive atmosphere we'd anticipated.

We grabbed burgers and refreshing drinks, the salty sea air invigorating. While waiting for our food, my eyes caught sight of familiar faces – former colleagues from CIJ! A wave of shyness washed over me. I couldn't quite remember one of their names, and the thought of approaching them felt daunting. I decided to observe from afar, content to admire them from a distance.

Kate's boyfriend and his friend joined us, and the evening took a delightful turn. We shared stories, reminisced about our time at CIJ, and even engaged in some lighthearted people-watching, commenting on various individuals and their unique styles. It was silly, slightly inappropriate, but undeniably fun. The laughter echoed against the backdrop of the crashing waves, a perfect soundtrack to our unplanned adventure.

As the clock ticked past 9:48 PM, a wave of anxiety washed over us. Transportation back home was scarce at this hour. Kate, in particular, was growing increasingly worried about reaching her boarding house. The journey back was filled with nervous chatter and relieved sighs as we finally arrived at our respective destinations, safe and sound.

Our spontaneous trip to Pier 88 was far from the quick excursion we'd planned. It was a night filled with unexpected twists, surprising encounters, and a healthy dose of laughter and anxiety. But it was also a night that cemented our friendship and created memories that we'll cherish for years to come. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures are the ones you never planned.
