Hace unos días camibaba por la zona de Tapachula donde vivo y encontré, sin buscarlo, este lugar, El Panteón Rural La Joya. Que dicho sea de paso, a primera vista se ve bastante rústico y hasta abandonado, nada que ver con una joya. Sin embargo, es uno de los lugares históricos y culturales más emblemáticos de la ciudad, y va mucho más allá de ser simplemente un camposanto.

A few days ago, I was walking around the area of Tapachula where I live and came across, without looking for it, this place: La Joya Cemetery. I must say, at first glance it looks quite rustic and even abandoned, nothing like a "jewel" (which is what "joya" means). However, it is one of the most iconic historical and cultural sites in the city, and it is much more than just a burial ground.
Les confieso que mi visita fue muy rápida porque lo cierto es que sentí un poco de respeto y sugestión. Estos son sitios místicos que siempre me impresionan. Por por lo que pude observar es un lugar muy colorido, más bien parece un parque infantil. Y es que los mexicanos son amantes de los colores hasta en la muerte.
I confess my visit was very brief because, honestly, I felt a bit of respect and suggestion. These are mystical places that always impress me. From what I could observe, it is a very colorful place, almost like a children's park. And that's because Mexicans love colors, even in death.
Como bien dice en el letrero de la puerta de entrada y por su aspecto general, este es un cementerio rural, de ahí se deduce que quienes descansan aquí, son personas de campo, gente humilde y de bajos recursos. En cambio, está considerado como patrimonio histórico y cultural por su valor arquitectónico y artístico.
As the sign at the entrance gate and its general appearance indicate, this is a rural cemetery. It follows that those resting here are country people, humble folks with few resources. Yet, it is considered a historical and cultural heritage site for its architectural and artistic value.
A pesar del claro abandono y exceso de yerbas en el lugar, este panteón es un libro abierto de la historia social de la región y se pueden observar tumbas, mausoleos y esculturas muy hermosas donde se encuentran detalles que reflejan la sensibilidad y el arte local.
Despite the obvious neglect and overgrowth of weeds, this cemetery is an open book of the region's social history. You can see tombs, mausoleums, and very beautiful sculptures with details that reflect local sensitivity and art.
Posee esculturas funerarias, muchas talladas en mármol y figuras de ángeles, santos y personas en actitud de duelo son de una gran belleza y detalle. Más que un lugar lúgubre, se percibe como un museo al aire libre y un espacio de tranquilidad. La vegetación abundante es parte de su encanto. Altos árboles como ceibas y laureles, dan sombra y crean un ambiente sereno, con entradas de luz y sombra.
It features funeral sculptures, many carved in marble, and figures of angels, saints, and people in mourning poses. They are of great beauty and detail. More than a gloomy place, it feels like an open-air museum and a space of tranquility. The abundant vegetation is part of its charm. Tall trees like ceibas and laurels provide shade and create a serene atmosphere, with play of light and shadow.
Es un punto de interés para turistas curiosos e interesados en la historia, la arquitectura y la fotografía. Es común ver visitantes recorriendo sus pasillos admirando las obras. Como cualquier cementerio, La Joya está rodeada de leyendas e historias populares. Se cuentan relatos sobre apariciones y sucesos misteriosos, especialmente de noche.
It is a point of interest for curious tourists and those interested in history, architecture, and photography. It's common to see visitors walking its aisles, admiring the works. Like any cemetery, La Joya is surrounded by legends and popular stories. Tales are told of apparitions and mysterious events, especially at night.
Durante el Día de Muertos (1 y 2 de noviembre), el panteón se transforma en una "fiesta de colores". Se llena de colorido con las tradicionales ofrendas, flores, velas y familias que visitan a sus difuntos, en una muestra de la tradición mexicana.
During the Day of the Dead (November 1st and 2nd), the cemetery transforms into a "festival of colors." It fills with color from traditional offerings, flowers, candles, and families visiting their departed, showcasing Mexican tradition.
El Panteón La Joya se encuentra ubicadoven la calle Josefa Irtiz de Dominguez, Colonia Nuevo Mundo, 3ra etapa,Tapachula, Chiapas y es un sitio imprescindible para experimentar la profunda relación entre la vida, la muerte y la memoria que tienen los mexicano. No es solo un cementerio, es un testimonio silencioso y hermoso de la identidad tapachulteca. Quien sabe si al final me toca visitarlo para siempre.
La Joya Cemetery is located on Josefa Irtiz de Dominguez Street, Colonia Nuevo Mundo, 3rd stage, Tapachula, Chiapas. It is an essential site to experience the profound relationship Mexicans have with life, death, and memory. It is not just a cemetery; it is a silent and beautiful testament to Tapachultecan identity. Who knows, maybe in the end, it will be my turn to visit it forever.
