Hello my traveling friends, greetings for the first time in this new year with the wish that you are well and that you have enjoyed happy celebrations.
On this occasion I want to share with you my visit to the National Museum of Fine Arts of Cuba, Cuban Art Building, since this is one of the museums that provided spaces to exhibit some of the works that participate in the Havana Biennial.
Although this was the main objective of the visit, the reality is that I was eager to enjoy once again the most famous paintings of Cuban painters, where each one has its own style, but many have in common the cheerful and tropical color that attracts so much attention.
The museum is a modern building from 1954 that combines ancient and modern elements, stones and glass, it is three floors with large rooms for exhibitions and has a large interior courtyard characteristic of colonial buildings.
Before entering the museum, we are greeted by a large sculptural work by the Cuban artist Rita Longa that she made in marble in 1953 and entitled Form, Space and Light, she managed to reflect the softness and movement of human figures despite the hardness of the material used, I am an admirer of her art, I always try to visit the places where there is a sculpture of hers, in my blog you can find some of those works.
When we go up the wide corridor to the galleries on the second floor, we are surprised by a large cockroach with a human face. It seems so real that I wanted to run and get away from there haha.
It is a work that belongs to the Cuban artist Roberto Fabelo, it is just one of the sculptures that he made in homage to Kafka's Metamorphosis and that have toured museums in various parts of the world.
It is said that the only survivors of a nuclear war will be cockroaches, will we suffer this metamorphosis?
I want to show you some of my favorite paintings by the main Cuban artists who in the last century stood out for the quality of their work that they showed in galleries all over the world.
When we arrived at the first exhibition hall of Cuban modern works we found the paintings of Carlos Enríquez, the first painting that caught my attention was the Portrait of María Luisa Gómez Mena, Countess of Revilla de Camargo, owner of a palace and many works of art that are currently part of the Museum of Decorative Arts that I showed you in a post recently.
But among his most famous paintings is The Rape of the Mulatto Women, I always admire its beauty, it is a wonderful work because we can see the figures of the men on horseback who kidnap two young mulatto women, all the figures overlap, but we can easily identify them, the colors they use show the drama and violence that the painter wanted to reflect. Very similar is the painting of the Combat, also very beautiful.
We continue touring and see the works of Amelia Peláez, I love the series of paintings of the Yellow Flowers because they have a charming luminosity.
The room dedicated to the artist Wilfredo Lam was closed, you could only see the works from the entrance, I took some photos to share them with you because they are really very beautiful.
I also enjoy the works of René Portocarrero and Mariano Rodríguez, both full of color and Cubanness.
At the end of the rooms there was a gallery dedicated to the Havana Biennial, here I leave you a sample of what was exposed.
I hope you liked this tour of the museum dedicated to Cuban art.
See you soon!
