🇫🇷 Je me lance avec cette série "STOP" dans le récit de quelques escales. Je ne vais pas les faire dans l'ordre chronologique, juste par envie des histoires pour dépoussiérer quelques vieux souvenirs. Nous sommes ici à l'Atoll de Maratua sur l'île de Bornéo.	🇬🇧 I’m embarking with this serie "STOP" in stories of a few stopovers. I won’t do them in order, just out of desire and to dust off some old memories. We are here in Maratua Atoll on Borneo island.

🇫🇷 ...Je reprends ici mon récit sur mon escale à l’atoll de Maratua.

Peu à peu je visite également ma zone de mouillage pour découvrir les alentours de ce petit paradis. Il y a un petit village où je me rends parfois pour échanger quelques bonjours et me dégourdir les jambes par un petit footing, et aussi l’hotel tenu par deux allemands et hébergeant une structure de plongée. La régularité de mes visites me donne droit à quelques bières et aux conversations qui vont avec. Entre plongeurs, il s’agit tout naturellement de conversations de plongée ! J’apprends alors que la zone du récif que j’évite en raison d’un courant très fort, la passe par laquelle je suis rentré en bateau, est un zone incroyable pour observer un banc de barracudas surréaliste. Du moins c’est comme cela que mes nouveaux amis allemands me présente les choses. Evidemment plonger durant les phases forte du courant serait suicidaire. Ils m’explique alors leur protocole de plongée avec une mise à l’eau à l’étale basse, une plongée de 30-40min avant que le courant de marée montante ne se mettent à fonctionner, et une récupération des plongeurs à l’intérieur du lagon par leur barque de sécurité. Tout cela me paraît très censé, sauf que dans mon cas, le plongeur, le capitaine de la barque de sécurité, le moniteur, c’est la même personne… moi. Les allemands l’ont bien compris et soucieux de me savoir à plonger là seul dans ces conditions, me proposent de m’y emmener. Je ne dis pas oui. Je repars en y réfléchissant.

🇬🇧 ... I resume here my story about my stopover at Maratua Atoll.

Little by little I also visit my mooring area to discover the surroundings of this small paradise. There is a small village where I sometimes go to exchange a few goodbyes and stretch my legs with a little jogging, and also the hotel run by two Germans and hosting a diving structure. The regularity of my visits entitles me to a few beers and the conversations that go with them. Between divers, it is quite naturally about diving conversations! I then learn that the area of the reef that I avoid due to a very strong current, the passage through which I returned by boat, is an incredible area to observe a surreal school of barracudas. At least that’s how my new German friends present things to me. Obviously diving during the strong phases of the current would be suicidal. They then explain to me their diving protocol with a low slack water launch, a 30-40min dive before the rising tide current starts to work, and a recovery of the divers inside the lagoon by their safety boat. All this seems very sensible to me, except that in my case, the diver, the captain of the safety boat, the instructor, it’s the same person... me. The Germans have understood well and are concerned to know that I should dive there alone in these conditions, offer to take me there. I do not say yes. I’m leaving thinking about it.

🇫🇷 Le lendemain les conditions sont parfaites, le lagon est plat, le soleil brille fort et la marée basse est prévue en fin de matinée. Tout est parfait. Je prépare mon matériel et me rend vers la passe pour observer. Sans surprise le courant est sortant et fort. Je patiente. Je repars faire un tour le long du tombant et reviens à quelques minutes de l’étale basse. Le courant à désormais bien baissé, l’eau est transparente. Je peux voir le fond de la passe et le début de sont tombant. J’hésite encore. Finalement je me rend compte que mon annexe ne bouge plus dans la passe, c’est l’étale. Soudain, alors que je regarde la transparence de l’eau, une énorme tache noire vient se positionner sous l’annexe. Je me penche avec mon masque pour regarder et j’y observe un banc de poissons constitué de milliers de barracudas. L’occasion est trop belle ! En quelque seconde je suis à l’eau avec ma bouteille de plongée sur le dos, mon appareil photo clipsé sur ma stab et l’ancre de mon annexe dans la dernière main qui me reste. Je descends les 15m de fond le plus rapidement possible et entoure la chaine autour d’un solide rocher au milieu de la passe. J’ai rendez-vous ici dans 30 min avant que le courant ne soit trop fort…

🇬🇧 The next day, the conditions are perfect, the lagoon is flat, the sun is shining brightly and low tide is expected at the end of the morning. Everything is perfect. I prepare my equipment and head towards the pass to observe. Unsurprisingly, the current is outward and strong. I wait. I go back for a walk along the drop-off and return to a few minutes from the low slack water. The current is now well lowered, the water is transparent. I can see the bottom of the pass and the beginning of have fallen. I’m still hesitating. Finally I realize that my annex no longer moves in the pass, it’s the slack. Suddenly, as I look at the transparency of the water, a huge black spot comes to position itself under the annex. I lean over with my mask to watch and observe a school of fish made up of thousands of barracudas. The occasion is too beautiful! In a few seconds I am in the water with my diving bottle on my back, my camera clipped onto my stab and the anchor of my tender in the last hand I have left. I go down the 15m as quickly as possible and circle the chain around a solid rock in the middle of the pass. I have an appointment here in 30 minutes before the current is too strong...

🇫🇷 Je me rends immédiatement vers le tombant, les barracudas ne sont plus là, je cherche mais aucune trace du banc. L’eau est limpide, j’en profite et le soleil brille très fort. Puis le soleil arrête de briller, tout devient sombre, pourtant les rochers plus loin devant restent dans le soleil, je ne comprends pas. Je lève la tête par réflexe pour voir où est passé le soleil, et me trouve alors nez à nez avec plusieurs milliers de barracudas au dessus de ma tête me cachant la lumière du soleil. C’est juste extraordinaire. Ils m’entourent, m’englobent, restent à moins de 2m de moi, me suivent, et me donnent quelques unes des plus belles photographies et quelques uns des plus beaux souvenirs de ma vie.

🇬🇧 I immediately head towards the drop-off, the barracudas are no longer there, I look for but no trace of the bench. The water is crystal clear, I enjoy it and the sun is shining very brightly. Then the sun stops shining, everything becomes dark, yet the rocks further ahead remain in the sun, I don’t understand. I raise my head reflexively to see where the sun has gone, and then find myself face to face with several thousand barracudas above my head hiding the sunlight from me. It’s just extraordinary. They surround me, encompass me, stay less than 2m from me, follow me, and give me some of the most beautiful photographs and some of the most beautiful memories of my life.

🇫🇷 30 minutes passent ainsi en compagnie de ce groupe de poissons dont je fais désormais partie. Puis mon palmage devient plus difficile et mon équilibre me demande plus d’effort… J’en avais oublié le courant de marée. Il me faut revenir vite à l’ancre. J’arrive à la retrouver sans trop de difficulté, la détache du rocher pour la fixer sur ma stab et me retrouve immédiatement happé vers l’intérieur du lagon. Je vois ainsi défiler la passe à 3m sous la surface et à bonne vitesse tracté par mon annexe ! 5 minutes plus tard, je sors la tête de l’eau, j’aperçois mon voilier à quelques centaines de mètres et j’ai déjà perdu de vue l’entrée de la passe qui est maintenant à plus d’un kilomètre. Incroyable force du courant. Demain j’y retourne !!!

I need to get back to the anchor quickly. I manage to find it without too much difficulty, detach it from the rock to fix it on my stab and immediately find myself drawn towards the inside of the lagoon. I thus see the pass passing by 3m below the surface and at good speed pulled by my annex! 5 minutes later, I get my head out of the water, I see my sailboat a few hundred meters away and I have already lost sight of the entrance to the pass which is now more than a kilometer away. Incredible strength of the current. Tomorrow I go back!!!
