I left the hotel looking for a store to buy a charger for my phone. When I walked out of the shop with the charger in my hand, I looked up… and there it was. The building caught my attention because it was so busy, which instantly set off my content creator instincts — it looked like a theater hiding secrets 🤫 And my content creator spider-sense was right. The moment I walked through the door, the world turned the volume down. Ideas, stories, and trips to fantastic worlds just by opening a book. El Ateneo was originally a theater, the Teatro Grand Splendid, inaugurated in the early 20th century. Orchestras, opera singers, artists, and shows that were once the top of Buenos Aires performed here.

Over the years, the theater stopped being a theater, went through its cinema era, and eventually became what it is today: one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. And I’m not exaggerating — it appears on international lists, cultural architecture rankings, and publications that describe it as one of the most impressive bookstores on the planet. And when you see it from the inside, you don’t need anyone to explain why.

The ceiling still preserves its painted dome, the balconies are still there, intact, and the feeling is the same as if you were about to watch a performance… except here, the main characters are the stories printed on paper. Where the stage once was, there is now a café. So you can have a coffee right where famous artists performed during the last century.

The bookstore has thousands and thousands of books. Of every genre, language, and size. Novels, essays, art, poetry, and special editions that look like museum pieces. There’s a dedicated kids’ area and spaces where people sit and read as if they were at home — just in a much more romantic version, like everything in this city 😂 The balconies and boxes are not just decoration. They are real spaces where you can walk, read, and look down, feeling like you’re part of the audience at an opera.

Thousands of people pass through here every day: tourists, locals, obsessive readers, people who came in looking for shelter from the heat, the rain, or life. Some buy books, others just look around or take photos. Some arrive with a list, others like me… with no plan, no intention, and a brand new phone charger in their backpack hahaha. Buenos Aires has that kind of magic. You leave home to buy something simple and end up in the middle of an adventure that teleports you to another century. A city you should definitely visit more than once in your lifetime ❤️

OMG that is fantastic! Would love to visit some day. But you know what? We have a similar one in Bonn, Germany. Not that huge but a similar style in an old movie Theater. Actually I even did a Hive post about it about a year or two ago.
