The Vintage Barn - Wheels from Bygone Years

in Worldmappin6 days ago (edited)

Finding The Vintage Barn among sugarcane fields, at Compensation, Ballito, on the Dolphin Coast of Kwazulu Natal, was like stepping into an Alladin's Cave for vintage hunters.

My bestie from school days took me to an early-morning health talk in the gorgeous coastal village of Salt Rock.

We had the whole day ahead of us afterward, so we took a scenic drive a little inland from another popular coastal holiday town, Ballito, to see why locals and tourists turn off the R102 and flock to this off-the-beaten-track venue over weekends.

It was well worth it.
Our trip started with fleeting glimpses of the ocean beyond exclusive beachfront homes from Salt Rock to Ballito, with luxury cars chasing money us, making it impossible to take a decent photo.

Once on the peaceful road inland, we were greeted by beautiful landscapes with rolling green hills of sugarcane, and avenues of trees.

We drove past Collisheen, a beautiful function/conference/team-building venue. Adventure Valley Zipline and off-road adventures are a little further along that road.

I took well over one hundred photos of everything vintage at the Barn; old sewing implements, kids' playground rides, an old milkshake machine, comic books, gramophones, old vinyl records, shotguns, homeware, an old candy cart, and the list goes on, and on!

The owners clearly have a good sense of humour.
Many car body parts were displayed - RIP, The End, and even a 'Short Road.'

Old gasoline pumps took me back many years.
Someone lost a leg, obviously while roller skating!
...and...we thankfully did not get a traffic fine for not feeding the parking metre.

Is anyone looking for body parts? You may just find a suitable car door, a trunk lid, or even a Front Bumper Grill for your Mercedes!

How did we manage without cell phones? Well, there were telephone booths all over towns and cities, but what about when you get stuck on the road outside town? You had to start walking and try to hitch a ride if you saw a car coming along.

I'm not sure if this sporty model is vintage or built by a crafter.

It sure wasn't Halloween, but a witch-on-a-broom was chasing a flying bicycle!

Remember the days of writing letters? I don't think many of you have done this, but it used to be how we communicated or sent documents to other destinations, many moons ago.

Does anyone remember these old speakers that used to hook onto your car window at the drive-in theatre? Some cars had rain shields in case it rained while at the drive-in, otherwise, the wipers would have to be turned on from time to time. Other times the rain would come down so hard that one had to leave halfway through the movie!

This old wheelbarrow was creatively turned into a funny old scarecrow.

I managed to find dessert bowls, and was tickled pink with the sign on the cash register; I must have had a good attitude as I was given a discount for my goods ;)

They do serve light meals at the Barn, but nothing appealed to us and my friend wanted to take me to her favourite coffee shop, Fábrica Coffee & Bistro Café in Sunningdale, Umhlanga.
We were starving as it was past lunchtime. We could not wait to dive into a scrumptious juicy bunless burger with all the trimmings, and a smoothie.
The perfect end to a fascinating day.

Hi. It's just us here. Ever thought about changing your avatar? Profile pic, whatever they're called. I only ask cuz these days when I see you post new content, I'm enamored by your resilience. Life doesn't give us many options but to keep going so, seeing it in motion, never disappoints.

My winded way of suggesting maybe a brand new, fresh, outwardly appearance is worth considering. Please don't allow this to offend, you've already chewed my ass in the past and there isn't much left! <3

Hey you two, you will never offend me!
I have thought about updating my profile pic, but am trying hard to stay forever young.
Thank you for the very kind words dear @dandays. Flying solo, at times, feels like one wing has been clipped, but it does make one stronger, life still has so much to offer.
My avatar obviously needs a makeover🫣
Enjoy your weekend further.

A quick question, there's a huge space at the end of my blog where I pasted the Worldmappin code, not sure why?

You are very welcome as always @lizelle🐝🐝 Hmm, that is weird. Please let me know if that keeps happening. We will check from our side.

If we could lift this whole trip over to UK ( including the weather please) that would be perfect, what a great day out. Loved all the bric n brac at the barn!

It was fascinating @livinguktaiwan, way too much to take in with just one visit.
Thank you so much for popping in🤗
Funny you mention the weather, just a day later heavy snowfall started falling in the Midlands of our province, it was freezing cold here as well. Thousands of motorists were stuck in snow for up to 2 days on the major route between Johannesburg and Durban, something that's never happened before!

Hive Power Up Day - October 1st 2024

Thank you so much for the stats @hivebuzz!

That's great @lizelle! We're thrilled with your progress on Hive! Don't stop before achieving this new goal!

The landscapes of the place are really beautiful. It is interesting to see the amount of old things that they preserve and use them to decorate the places so that they are pleasing to our eyes and remind us of past times. Although I will tell you something that caught my attention, the telephone booth and you know why, because in Cuba there are still some in operation. I really enjoyed your walk. Greetings.🥰🤗

Hi @mamani, thank you for visiting my blog. The Barn was fascinating, there were so many things from long ago. It's interesting that you still have telephone booths in operation, do many people use them?
Have a great Sunday, my friend🤗

What an amazing experience! So many towns in South Africa follow the same principle of using what would be considered "scrap" to the best of their advantage! Every little town has their own unique twist on it. Thank you for sharing!

It's awesome finding places like this, it amazes me just how creative people can be. Great when these discarded items are given a new lease on life in a new guise.

For sure! I appreciate that they do not simply throw things away. But sometimes I am jealous, especially with old typewriters. Getting harder to find these days. They are wonderful pieces for creating "word art" if they are in working condition.

I love this vintage barn. I really like the creativity in the objects you photographed and especially I am always fascinated by objects from the past or badly reduced and especially their reuse

Thank you for visiting my blog, I'm glad you enjoyed the vintage goods in the Barn. It always fascinates me to see how creative people can be! I still have a ton of other old objects to share, it was like stepping into the past.
Have a great Sunday @libertycrypto27!

Wow!... It's a delightful article to appreciate, I've enjoyed everything!... What a place full of antiquities and history!... It's a charming portal to the past!... Excellent photos also to illustrate this wonderful work xxx friend!... Thanks for posting this!

Lovely post dear @lizelle - such an adventurous spirit you have

What a fabulous excursion to that vintage barnyard. There are so many things that brought back memories from my youth. All the photos are delightfully fun in the way they have the items displayed. Love that you shared this with us.

It was such a fun outing, there were many things I did not expect. Brought back many happy memories for me as well @sunscape. Thank you for popping in <3
