Visiting two iconic men in Nottingham, UK

in Worldmappin2 years ago

Nottingham is a city in the Midlands in UK about 180km north of London and is most famous for amongst other things, two men - Brian Clough and Robin Hood. Before I introduce you to these two men, let me first show you around Nottingham city center.

The Old Market Square

The heart of Nottingham is the Old Market Square, this is the second largest public square in UK after London's famous Trafalgar Square. Called the city's beating heart, each year it hosts major events such as the Riviera Beach every summer and the Christmas Winter Wonderland source. The Council House dominates the square, particularly it's 200 feet high dome and the bell at the top which is affectionately called Little John by the locals.

Architecture around the city

During my brief stay at Nottingham I saw that it has a plethora of remarkable architecture. There is evidence of settlement here dating back to Roman times, though I doubt you and I will see this evidence on the streets. Instead there were many really interesting buildings ranging from the medieval times to the pre-industrial years.

Other interesting sights

I wandered around a little, and saw King Street and Queen Street facing off one another

Walked past one of the oldest pubs in the city, which dates back to 1240. The guy who sat outside gave me a friendly greeting 🤣

And I had to do a double back here to check, someone please come and help the little baby!!!

Nottingham castle

During the Norman Conquest, a wooden castle was built in Nottingham, and this was later replaced by a stone castle in the 12th century. It's located in an elevated position, crucial in the old days as it was used as a fort. I had a peek from the outside and the castle didn't seem very big. Since it cost £13 to go inside I was only on a short visit, I didn't go inside.

Robin Hood

Walking up the little slope to Nottingham Castle was a tad strenuous for us lazy buggers who don't normally do any exercise. But even if you don't go to see the Castle it's still worth coming, because you have to come and see one of Nottingham's most iconic man - Robin Hood.

Robin Hood is one of England's the best known folklore, the legendary outlaw who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. Legend has it that Robin Hood was a skilled archer who lived around Nottingham Forest, and dates back to the 14th century, but some say it could be as early as the 12th century. His actions have given Nottingham a reputation as a Rebel City for being a place where the locals will stand up for what they believe and support each other. source

The Robin Hood statue is located outside Nottingham Castle, if you're ever in town, don't forget to drop by to say hello.

Brian Clough

The second iconic man associated with Nottingham is Brian Clough. I've been meaning to write this post about Nottingham for a while and I finally figured today would be a good day to do it because of Brian Clough. Back in the mid 70s to early 80s, Brian Clough was Nottingham Forest football club's manager. Under Clough's leadership, Forest won the European Cup two years in a row in 1979 and 1980. Only two English clubs have achieved this.

This period was Forest's heyday, but sadly that didn't last. In the 90s Forest was relegated from the Premier League three times, the last time being 1999, and that's where they stayed for more than two decades. Forest was finally promoted back to the Premier League this season, and this weekend just gone, they played home for the first time in the Premier League for a long time. The result? They won!!! I'm sure Brian Clough would be jumping and down with joy in his coffin!

I'm not a football fan but I remember when Brian Clough was the manager of Brighton and Hove Albion. Brighton is about 20 miles from where I live. I think they were got into what was then the 1st division (this would have been in the late 70s) soon after he became their manager.

I'm not a footie fan either, but when your other half is, you pick up lots of trivia!! Brighton is doing well in the Premier League, staying in there since they've been promoted some years ago.

Awesome stuff! I remember someone on Hive a long time ago posted a photo of that same statue. What a great town just brimming with history! I remember reading the book Ivanhoe when I was a kid and thinking how cool it was that he intertwined Robin Hood into the story.

I just found the post, it was by @article61 a local. And I remember reading it back then, it was an epic post about the city. I'm glad I didn't revisit when I wrote mine, really puts mine to shame

Sadly I don't read much and haven't heard of Ivanhoe, but I am aware of Walter Scott as there's a big monument dedicated to him in Edingburgh city centre and I remember thinking what a remarkable structure when I first saw it.

Ooh, I'd love to see that some day! It sounds pretty awesome!

Thing about Robin Hood is that he was from Yorkshire. Barnsdale Bar on the A1 just South of Pontefract has a well that we were always told as kids was Robin Hood's well.

I did Google this and it seems the Daily Express would agree with me!

New evidence my arse, we've known this for years!

As for Cloughie, we don't mention that name in Leeds ;-)

Disappointing LUT, very disappointing but theres nothing good to say about Nottinghamshire so I guess they need to make stuff up lol

Hope youre well and best wishes :-)

ohhhhh.... do I smell lots of vinegar!!! 🤣🤣

Just checked... 12 September that's when the swords will come out. But don't worry, I will root for Leeds 💪

Looks like a very cool city with some very interesting history. I would definitely check out the Robin Hood statue if I went.

That baby doll in the window is pretty funny.

It almost looks like the guy at the pub is giving you the finger haha - it's a backwards peace sign though, I think. Maybe he's signaling the waiter for two more beers?!? 🤔 😂

@livinguktaiwan Beautiful architecture, like I've been there.

Wow - it has some really nice buildings. I've only been once, with work a long time ago, so I never really saw anything - thanks for sharing !

Awe, I remember that I wanted to visit Nottingham when I traveled to London, but it wasn't possible at that time for me, due to the days that I was going to be in the city.

The little baby in the window is terrible, hehe.

Thank you for these pictures, is very nice to be able to visit it at least from Hive :D

I had only been to Nottingham briefly on a 10 pin bowling weekend when I was in the 10 pin team at Uni! I can't remember much about that evening but I remember beating someone who came in with all the gear, gloves, their own bowling ball and I just rock up with house balls and hit my highest score after starting off with a gutter and 2 😃

Anyway, you mentioned two legends in their respective time frame, I wonder if Forest, now they are back in the Premier League will be able to relive the glory days from Brian Clough!

I know I wrote about Nottingham before but it’s so nice to read someone else’s experience of my wonderful hometown ❤️ Looks like you got around town ok and your pictures are super! Love the one with the man giving you a lovely gesture 🤔 let’s hope he meant it with some humour 🙈
