My northern lights holiday in Finland from 2014 currently ranks as one of my top 3 holidays alongside Petra in Jordan and Macchu Pichu in Peru. I've written parts about this holiday and there's so much more to share, perfect for another entry to WorldMapPin's #winterchallenge.
Let's start with my arrival at the hotel which was in the middle of nowhere. At 68.3 degrees and 150 km away from the Russian border, this is the furthest north I've ever been. I remember when we arrived at the hotel, the staff came out to help us take our luggage. They were wearing T-shirts and we were triple wrapped up in winter coats, scarves and woolly hat. To be fair, they were working indoors before we arrived and it was nice and cosy inside, but still, stepping out in the sub zero degrees cold in a T-shirt!!!
I don't have any photos of the actual hotel itself but I remember it was a very nice one, made of wood cabins. They also had some outbuildings. Everything and everywhere looked the same, covered in a blanket of beautiful pure white undisturbed snow. We don't have this sort of weather in UK where we live. It was serene and breathtaking.
Our holiday was an all inclusive one and included a lot of activities. I previously wrote about driving a snowmobile and going on a reindeer sleigh ride, you can read about that here. These were the stunning views we drove by on the snowmobile, and during the entire drive, I never got tired of looking at the views even if the driving the snowmobile was quite hard work.
It was a big heavy beast!!
At one point we stopped by the roadside and waded into the forest. See my path? It didn't take me long till the snow was above my knee, and it was all fresh snow. I've never seen snow this thick, in fact, I don't think I've ever seen snow more than 10cm thick.
On another day, we went on a husky safari. This, and the snowmobile were my two favorite activity. Two people share a husky pulled sled, this is ours and we started off with four huskys pulling us. Before we started, the guides assigned each pair to a particular sled based on eyeballing our weight and the size and number of huskys tied to each sled. One person stands at the back on a narrow plank, holding onto the handle bar, and the other person sits inside the sled.
Sitting inside the sled is not the most comfortable experience. You get a blanket to keep you warm, but the ride is extremely bumpy. Check out my video below.
I kept on sliding around as the husky's were going quite fast. Mid way during the ride, we took a rest and the guides switched some of the huskys around. There must have been about 20 sleds in the group, and some sleds like ours were going a little too fast because we had some strong huskys. The huskys go on automatic mode, you don't need to and can't control them, they just follow the pack ahead of them. The only 'control' you have is for the driver to step on a brake which is like a hook that digs into the ground. But bearing in mind we're on thick snow the brake doesn't cause much friction to slow down the huskys. Plus when the huskys are going at full speed, even if they slow down, the heavy sled will continue to slide along. I remember the sled in front of us had two Japanese girls about the same size as me, they had four big huskys and they nearly ran into the sled in front of them a few times. During the break, the guides removed one of their husky, and changed one of ours for a smaller one.
Despite all this, the ride was absolutely exhilarating and the best experience I've every had. Beats everything else I've tried. I'm told we did about 20km and we were out there from daytime to sunset. It was winter and we only had 2 hours of daylight. This is my view, and I was squeaking and shouting out to my husband at the back to see the amazing views left, right and centre. The poor guy told me afterwards that he was too busy holding onto the handle to maintain balance and couldn't barely concentrate on the views!! It was so funny! It's fair to say we each had our own very unique husky safari experience.
The other activities were more peaceful. We were taken out by car for more sight seeing, and I turned myself into a snow angel
Then we went on a snowshoeing trip. The snowshoe allows you to walk easier on the thick snow but it was still pretty hard work. Lots of exercise, but fun.
More stunning views are we trekked through the forest.
Our guide taught us basic survival skills if we're ever caught stranded in a snowy forest, and how to make a fire with no matches. He told us about his national service experience, about Norway and Russia's history, the relationship between the two countries, and of course how Russia tried to control Finland. Not a nice neighbor to have, as we all know. I'm surprised that Finland didn't join NATO earlier.
And last but not the least, the creme de la creme - northern lights. We were in Finland for a week, and saw the northern lights on 5 or 6 nights, including the last night outside our hotel. I've written about it in this posts here and will leave you with one breathtaking image of my northern light experience. Enjoy.
You should dress in red and pretend to be the Santa's force. 😎
Haha! I need to find Santa first!
Your post so reminded me of my childhood winter memories living in South Dakota. I laughed about the light wear of clothes by the hotel staff. Hey you can tell whose a local or not, haha. We owned two snow mobiles and there was so much snow to warrant them. Now no Husky experience but that sure looks like fun. Thanks for sharing you made reminiscence a bit 😃
I suddenly felt very overdressed when I saw the staff come out to greet us, and no wonder because once we got inside it was lovely and warm.
Do you still have the snowmobiles? I really enjoyed driving them. We even went out one evening on them on an aurora hunt. That was another awesome experience
Nope, they were sold a long time ago. It was great having these as we lived in the country side. Miles and miles to run them wide open. Indeed a lot of fun driving. We used them for a lot of reasons.
Have a great holiday over there 😀
Snow is incredibly beautiful. The last time I saw snow like this was in my native Ukraine. I would like to go sledding with huskies. It looks like you had a great time!
I hear it can get very cold in Ukraine as well, you must get a lot of snow. I hope you can go home soon, it's been a long time
Wow Finland looks wonderful, and certainly you had a big adventure! I'd love to live an experience like that and certainly have someone who teach me some surviving skills as you guys did, just in case!😅 thanks for sharing 🤍
I can't remember how the guide lit up a fire without matches, but it's good to know it's possible in case I ever need to work it out.
Husky safari, snow angels, northern lights - what not to love from this post? The ride was bumpy indeed but such a great experience it was, I am sure.
I didn't get the chance to try husky pulled sled but I walked with a husky pulling so hard and tirelessly on the leash 😅 They are strong, I imagine a it was like flying (bumpy flying)
Once I got used to the bumpy ride, it was ok 🙃 plus I was totally immersed in the gorgeous scenery that it didn't matter at all.
If and when it shows in Spain, you can quickly find a sled and get the husky to take you out on a husky ride !!
That's impressive.
You look SO happy!
I've never enjoyed the snow and always wondered about skiing, and seeing this husky-drawn sledge is a brilliant alternative. I would be freaking out watching them go at high speed 😳
Your photos made me excited and I think I'll keep an open mind to this possibility:)))
This is the nearest I've got to skiing, hubs not keen on it which means we won't go on ski holidays😞
I was originally a bit scared of the speed but it was ok after a while, and the worse thing that can happen is that we'll topple into the snow, that would be quite fun 😀
It is an incredible adventure, I would love to be able to travel in the snow and be in nature like that, I am happy for you, partner, greetings.
It was certainly a very memorably holiday, something that I've never experienced before, I'm so glad I went and saw the northern lights
Wow, that looks like an incredible experience
I can't imagine living somewhere with only having 2 hours of daylight.
Yeah, it was an absolutely amazing experience, I'm really glad I went, and when I was 10 years younger. Best to do all these active holidays before I'm in a wheelchair 😅
Yeah I hear you. You have a lo g ways to go yet though. Still time to pick away at the bucket list
Aw man, I love snow and I bloomin miss having it. I was always quite partial to making a snow angel!
Aren't you up north, Scotland? I thought you'd get a fair share of snow. We're lucky if we get a layer that last more than an hour on the lawn. White Christmas is a remote dream.
Yeah, you still get some in the hills and the like but in the cities we haven't read any good snow for years and when we do get it, it's gone the next day almost. I miss the darn stuff!
Awesome experience, this is what you told me in the comment.
Wow it looks great everywhere. Easy that it was all inclusive and the activities too. A fun packed week.
I so must go on a dog sled - husky safari too one day.
I can imagine your experiences were different… oh so cool 😎
It looks like the same soft and fluffy snow as here. We can sink in until our waistline hahaha
Thanks for sharing. I have to check out the other posts too.
Enjoy your evening 😊
Thanks for your inspiration Jackie, when I checked back to my post, I noticed I hadn't posted much about my favourite trip. I'd say the husky ride is an absolute must do, despite the speed and basic sled, the worse is that well fall over into the thick snow, and that would be fun!
Waistline snow! Wow! As long as it doesn't disrupt travels and you're not stranded, that sounds great!
You are welcome Pauline 😊 looking forward to more.
It looked indeed awesome and I can see why it is your favourite trip.
I know it is crazy in places. We do have to pick our days out and shopping carefully. Not always are the snow ploughs been.
Will document more from here to post later 😎
Good night 😴
What an amazing trip! This reminds me of home. If you travel just a bit north of where I live they have already gotten close to 100 inches of snow far this season I think.
what the....!!!! 100 inches of snow? You're in Michigan right? It's not that far north, how come it gets so much snow? I see from your latest post, you've had quite a bit already
It has to do with the snow bands and how the lake effect fronts move across the state. There are a couple areas that just get hammered. It's not like 100 inches all at one time. they might get like 48, then most of it melts and they get another 36 or something like that.
I'm not a fan of the cold but I would like to have an experience like that😍
I'm with you, I'm not sure I could live like this all by the time, but a holiday is fantastic
Hey @livinguktaiwan Merry Christmas! Hope you're doing well. The pictures are beautiful.
Hi Joanne, long time no see, trust you're well. Have a great Christmas!!

Wow, what a really fun holiday. If only I was in that country And also join in playing in the snow ,Just two seasons In my country, the rainy season and the dry season.Enjoy your holiday. Greetings
I can imagine it may be quite tough permanently living in these environments, likewise living with just a dry and rainy season.
!PIZZA
It's snowing so much that it's hard to move there. Even though it's cold and snowing, it's nice to see that you're having a great time there. But I wonder how the hotel staff are wearing only t-shirts in this cold. Dressed to keep warm. Wonder how they are coping with the cold. You were in a log cabin, it must be a new experience for you.Enjoy..🤝🤝
