Hi all 👋🏻
Today I want to share with you all a walk around the RUINS OF #ARDVRECK #CASTLE, located at #LOCH #ASSYNT what is in the #HIGHLANDS of #SCOTLAND 🏴 / UK 🇬🇧
As the drive to it was truly #magical, I will show you this part too 😎 we had some snow a few weeks ago and it made everything look like #winterwonderland again ❄️☃️❄️
This is part of our #explorations out, to #discover new areas, since we live in the highlands from the end of January this year. 😊

I will follow the time stamps on them. So it looks like you are driving along to the castle and walking along with me on this #walk in ❄️☃️❄️ #WINTERWONDERLAND, to 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 #discover everything what I saw, like the little #details seen through my eyes. 😊

Imagine how long ago that is… 🤓
Let’s start our DRIVE and WALK:
Are you coming along? 😉😊
This time we need to take some warm gloves and a scarf and hat again… ❄️☃️ next to winter clothes and a warm jacket 🧥
The funny thing is… I didn’t expect to see much snow to be honest.
As we started driving we see around us this green landscape, only in the distance some snow on the tops of the mountains.
But soon… slowly this started to happen ❄️❄️❄️
The landscape was turning more white with every kilometre we drive up north ❄️❄️
Look how pretty it looks 😎
We see in the distance the mountains are covered with a thick pack of snow ❄️ that’s the way we are heading 😊 we had this much snow too but the area we live in was already defrosting earlier.
Oh what is the view beautiful… 🥰
We are reaching a village along the way. #Elphin is its name.
After some twisty turny bends through the #village we see more winterwonderland ☃️❄️
At this point we decide to drive a bit further than only to the castle as we want to see more of this winterwonderland around us first ❄️☃️❄️ and at the way back we will stop at the CASTLE 🏰
So we do drive much further, about an hours drive further.
I show you here the highlights of the drive 😎
We are the only ones on the road btw. So we can stop a few times, jump out of the car 🚗 and take some pretty pictures 📸 like this one. If you look closely you see the snow is being blown of the higher peaks…
The roads are luckily not too bad 🤓 but we drive carefully further.
Another stop… we get out of the car 🚗
I love snowy landscapes like this… bright blue skies… just us and nobody else.
A perfect weekend I must say 😊
Here we are at a higher point and I look back, the road twists through the #scenery.
I was hoping to find some #deer 🦌 as you would be able to see them really good now, but sadly we didn’t spot any… that were close enough to photograph.

…now we are heading back to the castle ruins.
Reaching the loch Assynt. We park our car 🚗 wrap up warm and start our walk 😊
And we reached the ruins, this time we could cross the water and walk onto the island the castle is on.

The path visible is normally flooded. You can’t cross to the island, at least this is the first time we saw that we could cross. All other times the water was high and we couldn’t when we visited the castle. 😎

Walking around it now… the ruin towers high above us.

I see icicles hanging of the ceiling… 🥶🥶🥶

What a sight… I can imagine the rest of the castle still being there.

Although it started to snow again… the sun is peeking behind the mountains and castle 🏰

We decide to walk back now. More photographers came, so we are not alone anymore 😎 but we got some good photos while nobody was around 😁 don’t you think?
Along the waters edge we find these grasses covered in snow, what makes for a cool sight 😎

Fantastic to see these castle ruins Jackie, and the winter wonderland around it, one thing that always hits me when seeing these kinds of ruins is how they must have been verry cold to live in due to the places most of them are located at as they are built for maximum defense rather than comfort, and how windy most of those places are, thanks a lot for sharing and stay !ALIVE

Wow! you went from spring to winter! 😀 Wow! it must have been a very tall castle. a castle abandoned in the snow - romantic! I hope you didn't freeze then.

What a trip into the Highlands! Wow! I forget how vast that is there. The ice and snow make it seem even more remote.
How far did you have to walk to get to the ruins? I have to say that I am not a fan of trudging into the unknown with snow.

Still, the vastness, the skies, and the tiny little details pictured really made it a fun adventure. The ruins were pretty gone, but, like you, I can imagine the glory and grandeur of what once was. Those gates were pretty cool that they were still intact!

This part is remote. To do stuff like post office or big shopping for groceries it’s a 1 hour 15 drive.
But the beauty… love it 🥰
The walk from the parking isn’t that far. About 5 minutes. There is a path with gravel. Ok… we didn’t see it but knew where it kinda was hahaha. So all good.
It was stunning in every way. A perfect day to be out, I so needed it hahaha 🤣 blue skies, thick snow and ruins… yep, my kind of things.
It so stands out in the scenery these ruins 😎 with the snow even more.
This weekend we get our last visitors. Friends from London. Then full to packing up again as next weekend we are gone for 2 full weeks 😬 when back only 1,5 week left to finish.

The snow was indeed thick and in places where we stopped the car along the way I couldn’t see my feet anymore… hahaha we tried at one point to reach a waterfall in a ravine.
There was no sunshine and a truly strong wind going through it. Next to a river.
We made it only half way as our faces started to freeze 🥶 we needed to turn back. It was that cold there.
But in the open it was nice.
I’m glad you saw what I saw… the feel around that castle was interesting. Will share more next week.

Yes it did… so I thought… nope, we go not further we have to turn around.
I never experienced anything like that. We were dressed for such cold. Just the areas that were not covered… our faces above the scarf and what was exposed under the hats… 🥶🥶🥶

Hahaha !LOL luckily we can visit extreme places on-line, in the safety from our home. 😉
The good thing about freezing temperatures, one can dress for it. (With keeping in mind safety)
For the hot summers in some regions… you can’t dress for it. Hahaha
I love it here, better climate wise than southern Spain. I just couldn’t cope with it anymore. It only got hotter and hotter. I saw a news article yesterday stating this week there will be temperatures of 30+ degrees Celsius. And it is only March. 15 degrees more than normal.
So happy I decided to go north.

Yes, it is true, you can dress for cold weather but not for hot weather. But it's amazing how one adapts to the weather in your area.
You say that you see the temperature is 30+ this week in Spain. Am I right in saying summer is on its way in Spain? Because we are heading for winter now. But 30+ in summer is normal here for us during the summer months. As a matter of fact, we are starting to get some cooler days at the moment and today is one of those days. It is currently 22 here and I am wearing a jacket because it feels chilly to me...lol.
But I'm glad you enjoy living in the cooler (colder) weather up north! And I have to say, cold or not...it's beautiful🙏👍!

Looks like the castle is losing its walls. Or it is buried. I wonder how it's like inside the rooms.
It lost about 80% of the castle… and will loose more going forward as time passes. I think indeed some is also under the ground.
