San Isidro. History, Art and Architecture [en/es]

The neighborhood of San Isidro, located in Old Havana, is a place full of history, art and architecture. This neighborhood extends from Alameda de Paula to the center of the historic district, from Egido Street to Avenida del Puerto and from Acosta to Desamparados, as you can see in the Google map I show you below. Recently, I had the opportunity to walk its streets accompanied by my son, and together we discovered the cultural and architectural richness that this neighborhood of Havana has to offer.

El barrio de San Isidro, situado en La Habana Vieja, es un lugar lleno de historia, arte y arquitectura. Este barrio se extiende desde la Alameda de Paula hasta el centro del casco histórico, desde la calle Egido hasta la Avenida del Puerto y desde Acosta hasta Desamparados, como puedes ver en el mapa Google que les muestro a continuación. Recientemente, tuve la oportunidad de recorrer sus calles acompañado de mi hijo, y juntos descubrimos la riqueza cultural y arquitectónica que ofrece este barrio de La Habana.

Our tour began with a stroll through the streets adorned with vibrant graffiti that tell stories and reflect the creativity of local artists. Each mural is a window into the life and spirit of the neighborhood, and we stopped at several points to admire these works of urban art. Because of these graffiti that adorn the walls of the houses, San Isidro is visited by many foreign and domestic tourists, attracted by its colorfulness and authenticity. Among the graffiti I saw, although some of them no longer have the signature of their actor due to the passage of time, I recognized some, such as the unmistakable art of Mr. Myl that I love, where he always puts on his characters a wide and sarcastic smile showing all his teeth.

Nuestro recorrido comenzó con un paseo por las calles adornadas con vibrantes graffitis que cuentan historias y reflejan la creatividad de los artistas locales. Cada mural es una ventana a la vida y el espíritu del barrio, y nos detuvimos en varios puntos para admirar estas obras de arte urbano. Debido a estos graffitis que adornan las paredes de las casas, San Isidro es visitado por muchos turistas extranjeros y nacionales, atraídos por su colorido y autenticidad. Entre los graffitis que vi, aunque algunos ya no tienen la firma de su actor por el paso del tiempo, reconocí algunos, como el inconfundible arte de Mr. Myl que me encanta, donde siempre pone a sus personajes una amplia y sarcástica sonrisa mostrando todos sus dientes.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this neighborhood of the city is its colonial architecture. The facades of the houses, with their arches, balconies in many cases wrought iron and details, I think this neighborhood should pay attention to improve the condition of some buildings, because it would be a shame that all this heritage is lost also is so close to the historic center of the city, so it is an important tourist attraction this style arquitecctonico of that time, which has been standing for several centuries.

Uno de los aspectos más fascinantes de este barrio de la ciudad es su arquitectura colonial. Las fachadas de las casas, con sus arcos, balcones en muchos casos de hierro forjado y detalles, creo que este barrio se le deberia prestar atencion para mejorar el estado de algunos edificios, porque seria una pena que todo este patrimonio se perdiera ademas esta tan cerca del centro historico de la ciudad, por lo que es un importante atractivo turistico este estilo arquitecctonico de esa epoca, que lleva en pie varios siglos.

We passed by two important churches in this neighborhood, which always attract a large number of the faithful from all parts of the city, the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, one of the most visited, and the Church of the Holy Spirit. Both buildings are magnificent examples of colonial religious architecture and impressed us with their beauty and serenity.

Pasamos junto a dos iglesias importantes de ese barrio , que siempre atran a un numero importante de fieles de todas la partes de la ciuda, la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced, esta es una de las mas visitadas y la Iglesia del Espíritu Santo. Ambos edificios son magníficos ejemplos de arquitectura religiosa colonial y nos impresionaron por su belleza y serenidad.

On our tour, we entered some local markets in the neighborhood and enjoyed the hospitality of its inhabitants. Every corner of San Isidro has a story to tell, and it was a pleasure to discover these hidden treasures with my son, some streets are cobbled as in colonial times, others not, it was a coming and going from one era to another, some contemporary businesses contrasted with that fascinating architecture that always dazzles me. In those balconies that have survived many years, there were sheets hanging as in many places in Havana.

En nuestro recorrido, entramos a algunos mercados locales del barrio y disfrutamos de la hospitalidad de sus habitantes. Cada rincón de San Isidro tiene una historia que contar, y fue un placer descubrir estos tesoros escondidos con mi hijo, algunas calles están empedradas como en la época colonial, otras no, fue un ir y venir de una época a otra, algunos negocios contemporáneos contrastaban con esa fascinante arquitectura que me deslumbra siempre. En esos balcones que han sobrevivido muchos años, había sábanas colgadas como en muchos lugares de La Habana.

San Isidro is not only a testimony of the past, but also a reflection of life in Havana today. This tour allowed us to appreciate the mix of tradition and modernity that characterizes the neighborhood, and left us wanting to continue exploring and learning more about its history and its people. We left through Luz Street, which led us to Alameda de Paula, right there in front of the sea where all the vertical streets of this old and traditional neighborhood of Havana end.

San Isidro no es sólo un testimonio del pasado, sino también un reflejo de la vida en La Habana de hoy. Este recorrido nos permitió apreciar la mezcla de tradición y modernidad que caracteriza al barrio, y nos dejó con ganas de seguir explorando y aprendiendo más sobre su historia y su gente. Salimos por la calle Luz, que nos llevó hasta la Alameda de Paula, justo ahí frente al mar donde terminan todas las calles verticales de este antiguo y tradicional barrio de La Habana.
