In all this time travelling I have already walked on so many trails and small mountains that I have lost count. Fortunately, everything always went well on each of those walks, which managed to take me to beautiful places. To date, I can proudly say that I have never had any accident or serious inconvenience, although the closest I could come to something like that was when I set out to climb the highest mountain in Esquel, in the province of Chubut. I am not a person with vertigo or fear of adventure, but perhaps that day my guard was down and I was almost unable to continue because of a strange episode. However, I am happy to say that we still made it to the summit and I was able to complete my great feat, otherwise it would have been a shame to miss out on such a great place 😅.
En todo este tiempo viajando ya caminé en tantos senderos y pequeñas montañas que perdí la cuenta. Por suerte, siempre salió todo bien en cada uno de esos paseos, que lograron llevarme a lugares hermosos. Al día de la fecha puedo decir orgullosa que nunca tuve ningún accidente o inconveniente tan grave, aunque lo que más se podría parecer a algo así fue cuando me propuse subir al cerro más alto de Esquel, en la provincia de Chubut. Yo no soy una persona que tenga vértigo o tanto miedo a la aventura, pero quizás ese día estaba con la guardia baja y casi me quedo sin poder continuar por un episodio extraño. Sin embargo, me alegra decir que igual llegamos a la cumbre y que pude completar mi gran hazaña, de lo contrario hubiese sido una pena perderme de un lugar tan genial 😅.
Having been in Esquel for so long, I didn't want to leave without doing something "epic". Well, I had already done a lot of great things, but I was looking for something a bit better, within the limits of normal people. It was in search of that extra bit of adrenaline that I discovered that Cerro Nahuel Pan is the highest mountain in Esquel, at 2260 masl. This mountain would beat my record for the highest mountain so far, Piltriquitrón Mountain in El Bolsón, at 2200 metres. I thought that if I had already climbed one, I could easily climb the other 😃.
Después de haber estado tanto tiempo en Esquel, no quería irme de ahí sin hacer algo grandioso. Bueno, ya había hecho muchas cosas grandiosas, pero estaba buscando algo un poco mejor, dentro de los límites de las personas normales. En busca de ese poco extra de adrenalina fue que descubrí que el Cerro Nahuel Pan es el más alto de Esquel, con 2260 msnl. Esta montaña superaría mi record de montaña más alta hasta el momento, el Cerro Piltriquitrón en El Bolsón, con 2200 metros. Pensaba que si ya había subido a uno, fácilmente podría subir al otro 😃.
At first I searched on trekking route websites for how to go alone, but none of the trails were quite clear. Besides, it seemed a bit dangerous to go alone to such an unknown place: on the ascent to the ‘piltri’ I had gone with companions from the hostel, what made the walk more affordable. Luckily, as the days went by, my volunteering partner arrived who was also interested in doing something like that, so we wanted to go together. We asked at the tourist office and they advised us not to go, and I even asked the guide who had taken me to Cerro 21 to pay him to take us, but he didn't answer my messages either. Nobody wanted us to go 😂.
Al principio busqué en páginas de rutas de trekking cómo ir sola, pero ningun sendero estaba del todo claro. Además, me parecía un poco peligroso ir sola a tal lugar desconocido: en el ascenso al "piltri" había ido con acompañantes del hostel, lo que volvió el paseo más amigable. Por suerte, con el pasar de los días llegó mi compañera de voluntariado quién también estaba interesada en hacer algo como eso, así que queríamos ir juntas. Preguntamos en la oficina de turismo y nos recomendaron no ir, e incluso pregunté al guía que me había llevado al Cerro 21 para pagarle y que nos llevara, pero tampoco me contestó los mensajes. Nadie quería que fuéramos 😂.
To our good fortune, when Agos and I camped in Los Alerces National Park we met Alejandro, who at that time was in charge of the campsite. He is a frequent skier in the Esquel mountains, and Cerro Nahuel Pan was one of the ones he knew best because of this. When we told him that we were interested in going, he didn't hesitate to offer to accompany us. Of course this was great for us: a companion who knew the trail very well was just what we needed 😃.
Para nuestra buena suerte, cuando Agos y yo acampamos en el Parque Nacional Los Alerces conocimos a Alejandro, quién en ese momento estaba como encargado del camping. Él es un esquiador frecuente en las montañas de Esquel, y el Cerro Nahuel Pan era uno de los que más conocía debido a esto. Cuando le comentamos que estábamos interesadas en ir, no dudó en ofrecerse a acompañarnos. Por supuesto que esto nos vino genial: un acompañante que conociera el camino muy bien era justo lo que necesitábamos 😃.
When we all returned to Esquel, including Alejandro who lived in the city, we organised for the three of us to go one day together. This route is quite long if you start walking from the centre of Esquel: we had 15 km one way, so it was best to start early. We met at 7 am and slowly started the walk at night, while the sun was rising. At the beginning of the trek we had to cross fenced fields of private properties and then the trail was not marked at all, so I was glad we didn't go alone because we were definitely going to get lost 😂.
Cuando todos regresamos a Esquel, incluído Alejandro que vivía en la ciudad, nos organizamos para ir un día los tres juntos. Este recorrido es bastante largo si empezas a caminar desde el centro de Esquel: teníamos 15 km solo de ida, así que lo mejor fue iniciar temprano. Nos reunimos a las 7 am y lentamente empezamos la caminata de noche, mientras el sol iba saliendo de a poco. En el principio del trekking tuvimos que atravesar campos alambrados de propiedades privadas y luego el sendero no estaba marcado para nada, así que me alegré de que no hayamos ido solas porque definitivamente nos íbamos a perder 😂.
About two hours into our walk, my friend Agos suddenly realised that she didn't have her mobile phone. When she checked, the pocket of her jacket was torn, so she must have dropped it somewhere on the non-trail. She decided to retrace her steps to look for it and Alejandro and I stayed a while to wait for her, hoping that she would be nearby and she would come back quickly. This wait turned into more than an hour and she didn't come back, until we decided to continue on our way alone. It's not as if we had abandoned her in a remote place because we were still quite close to a town outside Esquel, so we knew she would be fine 🙃.
Habrían pasado unas dos horas de iniciada nuestra caminata, cuando de pronto mi amiga Agos se da cuenta de que no tenía su teléfono celular. Cuando revisa, el bolsillo de su campera estaba roto, por lo que seguramente se le cayó en alguna parte del no-sendero. Ella decidió volver sobre sus pasos para buscarlo y Alejandro y yo nos quedamos un rato a esperarla, con la esperanza de que estuviera cerca y ella regresara rápido. Esta espera se transformó en más de una hora y ella no volvía, hasta que nosotros decidimos continuar el camino solos. No es como si la hubiesemos abandonado en un lugar remoto porque todavía estabamos bastante cerca de un pueblo en las afueras de Esquel, así que sabíamos que ella iba a estar bien 🙃.
Despite having continued on the road without Agos, I was hopeful that she would at some point find her mobile and return. And by the time this was supposed to happen, I didn't want her not to find us. That's why I told Alejandro that we should follow a path up the mountain but be visible from the valley, in case if she came back, she would see us coming up the mountain. Of course, to do this was to climb the mountain at its steepest part, without doing the classic snails that soften the slopes. But I didn't mind making more physical effort as long as our friend could see us from afar 😶.
A pesar de haber continuado el camino sin Agos, yo tenía la esperanza de que ella en algún momento encontrara su celular y volviera. Y para cuando esto supuestamente sucediera, no quería que no nos encontrara. Es por eso que le dije a Alejandro que siguiéramos un camino montaña arriba pero que sea visible desde el valle, en caso de que si ella volviera, nos viera subir la montaña. Por supuesto que hacer esto era subir a la montaña por su parte más empinada, sin hacer los clásicos caracoles que te suavizan las pendientes. Pero no me importaba hacer más esfuerzo físico con tal de que nuestra amiga nos viera desde lejos 😶.
We started the climb up the mountain on its steepest side, which at first was easy because there was plenty of grass to walk on, but as we reached the summit, this gradually disappeared. As the terrain was untrodden and snowy in the winter, it was smooth and increasingly fragile and slippery, with small pebbles that did not allow you to settle your footing. At that moment I was glad I had poles, because I think that without them, the climb would have been too difficult. More than two hours had passed since the last time we had seen Agos and it was then that I stopped waiting for her for good, but we were already climbing the worst part of the mountain and it was not worth going back to take the easier path 🙃.
Emprendimos la subida a la montaña por su cara más empinada, lo que al principio era fácil porque había bastante pastizal por donde pisar, pero que, a medida que íbamos llegando a la cumbre, este iba desapareciendo. Al ser un terreno no pisado y con nieve en el invierno, estaba liso y cada vez era más frágil y resbaloso, con pequeñas piedritas que no te dejaban asentar la pisada. En ese momento me alegré de tener bastones, porque pienso que sin ellos, la subida hubiese sido demasiado dificil. Ya habían pasado más de dos horas de la última vez que habíamos visto a Agos y fue entonces que dejé de esperarla definitivamente, pero ya estábamos subiendo por la peor parte de la montaña y no valía la pena regresar a tomar el sendero más fácil 🙃.
That was the moment when the terrain became so fragile and steep that it felt like walking on sand. It was one step up and three steps back down. I was using a lot of arm strength to hold on to the poles, which made me tire too quickly. And there I made the worst mistake I could have made: looking down. We were really HIGH and really steep, which made me think that if I slipped, the fall would be terrible. My hands started to sweat too much and I felt my vision dimming. Meanwhile, my guide Alejandro was about 20 metres ahead of me and I was paralysed, I couldn't take another step and I couldn't get my voice out enough to shout at him to come back and help me. I just stood there 😂.
Fue ese el momento en el que el terreno se volvió tan frágil y empinado que parecía estar caminando sobre arena. Era dar un paso y retroceder tres para abajo. Estaba usando mucha fuerza de mis brazos para mantenerme firme con los bastones, lo que hacía que me cansara demasiado rápido. Y ahí cometí el peor error que podría haber cometido: mirar para abajo. Estábamos realmente ALTO y EMPINADO, lo que me hizo pensar en que si llegaba a resbalarme, la caída sería terrible. Las manos me empezaron a transpirar demasiado y sentí que la visión se me oscurecía. Mientras tanto, mi guía Alejandro estaba como 20 metros más adelante y yo me quedé paralizada, no podía dar un paso más y tampoco me salía la voz como para gritarle que volviera a ayudarme. Me quedé dura ahí 😂.
A few minutes later, when Alejandro finally saw down in the mountain and that I wasn't coming up, he came back a bit to help me. Not by holding out his hand, but by guiding my breathing to calm me down and encouraging me to take small steps. After gathering my courage I made my way with great effort to a rock where I sat down to drink some water and eat some sweets. It was a horrible episode and I couldn't stop shaking, nothing like that had ever happened to me before. I think it was the fear that left me in that state, but after a while I was ready to go on. The good thing is that during my break I was able to admire the great scenery we were in and that gave me the courage to continue 😃.
Unos minutos después, cuando Alejandro finalmente vio para abajo y que yo no subía, regresó un poco para ayudarme. No extendiendome su mano, sino guiandome en la respiración para que me tranquilice y alentándome a dar pequeños pasos. Después de juntar coraje fue llegar con mucho esfuerzo a una piedra en donde me senté a tomar agua y a comer unos caramelos. Fue un episodio horrible y no paraba de temblar, nunca me había pasado algo así. Creo que fue el miedo lo que me dejó en ese estado, pero un rato después ya estaba lista para seguir. Lo bueno es que en mi descanso pude admirar el gran paisaje en el que estábamos y eso me dió ánimos para continuar 😃.
When we finally finished that big steep section and I thought we were close, well, no. This was just a "small" hill and there was still the path to the summit. What surprised me at that moment was seeing so much snow, something I definitely did not expect. I did know it was a high mountain, but everything was so dry down there that I thought it had all melted. Anyway, this made the landscape even more beautiful 😃.
Cuando finalmente terminamos esa gran parte empinada y yo creía que estábamos cerca, pues no. Esta era solo una "pequeña" loma y todavía faltaba el camino a la cumbre. Lo que me sorprendió en ese momento fue ver tanta nieve, algo que definitivamente no esperaba. Sí sabía que era una montaña alta, pero todo estaba tan seco abajo que pensaba que estaba todo derretido. Como sea, esto hacía todavía más lindo el paisaje 😃.
According to Alejandro, the good thing about going up that rather steep path was that we saved about an extra hour of hiking on the more gradual trail. This was good for us, because we were short on time due to the incident with the cell phone. By the time we saw the summit it was almost 5 PM, the day had gone by really fast and I had to go to work at the hostel at 8 PM. I already knew I was going to be late, but in that moment of so much euphoria I didn't even care: I wanted to reach the summit at last and it was there in front of us😂.
Según Alejandro, lo bueno de haber subido por ese camino bastante empinado es que nos ahorramos como una hora extra de caminata por el sendero más gradual. Esto nos venía bien, porque estabamos ajustados de tiempo por el incidente con el celular. Para cuando divisamos la cumbre eran casi las 5 PM, el día había pasado realmente rápido y yo tenía que entrar a trabajar en el hostel a las 8 PM. Ya sabía que iba a llegar tarde, pero en ese momento de tanta euforia ni siquiera me importó: quería lograr la cumbre al fin y ya estaba enfrente de nosotros 😂.
The view from there was simply amazing. It was very clear that we were on the highest mountain in the place, because everything looked so tiny and imposing that it was exciting. The fact that there was snow but not so much that we could reach it made everything incredible. The 360° view was the best we could have, and the best of all is that the weather also helped us by not having any wind or freezing cold. The snow just decorated the landscape for us 😃.
La vista desde ahí era simplemente maravillosa. Era muy claro que estábamos en la montaña más alta del lugar, porque todo se veía tan minusculo e imponente que emocionaba. El hecho de que hubiera nieve pero no tanta como para permitirnos llegar hizo que todo sea increíble. La vista 360°C era la mejor que podíamos tener, y lo mejor de todo es que el clima también nos ayudó al no tener nada de viento o frío congelado. La nieve solo adornaba el paisaje para nosotros 😃.
To this day, this is the highest mountain I have ever hiked. After having climbed the "piltri" in El Bolsón, I didn't think I would be on such a high mountain again. And it was summer when I was in El Bolsón, so I hadn't seen as much snow as I had that day. I thought everything looked pretty cool, although I couldn't help but feel a little sorry for Agos and her incomplete hike to this mountain, since it was something we wanted to do together. I was comforted by the fact that on her way back she would surely have found her cell phone at last 😅.
Hasta el día de hoy, esta es la montaña más alta a la que subí caminando. Después de haber subido al "piltri" en El Bolsón, no pensé que iba a volver a estar en una montaña tan alta. Y en mi estadía en El Bolsón era verano, así que no había visto tanta nieve como en ese día. Pienso que todo se veía muy genial, aunque no pude evitar sentir un poco de pena por Agos y por su recorrido incompleto a esta montaña, ya que era algo que queríamos hacer juntas. Me consolaba saber que en su camino de vuelta seguramente habría encontrado su celular al fin 😅.
What I loved about this summit was that there were some sticks stuck into it, with strange shapes due to the cold, the snow and the wind. These were like little ice cubes, all along the stick, creating this very satisfying effect. Until that moment I had never been on a summit with snow, so I was glad of this element of surprise ❤️.
Lo que me encantó de esta cumbre es que en ella habían unos palos clavados, con unas extrañas formas debido al frío, la nieve y el viento. Estos eran como pequeños hielitos, todos a lo largo del palo, generando ese efecto muy satisfactorio. Hasta ese momento nunca había estado en una cumbre con nieve, así que me alegré de este factor sorpresa ❤️.
A curious fact about this summit is that there was cell phone reception. There wasn't any all the way, but a while after I got there, my cell phone started ringing with messages. It was my boss at the hostel, who told me that Agos was there but unfortunately he hadn't found his cell phone. This made me a little sad, but we knew that we had passed through many fields without people, so he was most likely lost in the grasslands. I took the opportunity to tell my boss that I wouldn't be back to work on time because it was already 6 PM and I was 15 km from the hostel, and after that I turned off my cell phone. If he had to tell me off, i'd find out later 😂.
Un dato curioso de esta cumbre es que había señal de celular. Durante todo el camino no, pero un rato después de haber llegado hasta ahí, mi celular empezó a sonar con mensajes. Era mi encargado de trabajo en el hostel, quien me avisaba que Agos estaba ahí pero que lamentablemente no había encontrado su celular. Esto me entristeció un poco, pero sabíamos que habíamos pasado por muchos campos sin gente, así que lo más probable era que esté perdido en los pastizales. Aproveché para decirle a mi jefe que no volvería a tiempo a trabajar porque ya eran las 6 PM y yo estaba a 15 km del hostel, y después de eso apagué el celular. Si tenía que retarme, mejor me enteraría luego 😂.
We stayed at the summit as long as the sun allowed us, until we started our return. Watching the golden hour from there was incredible: the truth is that Esquel was wonderful and I grew very fond of it during my stay. Unfortunately for us, there was not enough daylight to return to the city during the day and night found us more than halfway there. The good thing is that Alejandro had come prepared with flashlights and since he knew the path well, we were able to return without problems, finishing our trekking day at 11 PM 😂.
Nos quedamos en la cumbre todo lo que el sol nos lo permitió, hasta que emprendimos nuestro regreso. Ver la golden hour desde ahí fue increíble: la verdad es que Esquel era maravilloso y le tomé mucho cariño durante mi estadía. Para nuestra mala suerte, el tiempo de luz no fue suficiente como para regresar a la ciudad de día y la noche nos encontró a más de mitad de camino. Lo bueno es que Alejandro había ido preparado con linternas y como conocía bien el camino, pudimos regresar a sin problemas, terminando nuestra jornada de trekking a las 11 PM 😂.
Besides being the day I almost "knocked out" for the first time, this was the day I walked the most to date. In total, my step counter counted 30 km between the outbound and return journeys, with a steep climb included and all those steps in vain trying to climb the mountain on that overly sandy terrain. Despite the near-fainting, the lost cell phone, missing work (spoiler, they didn't tell me off that much) and the blistered feet at the end, this qualifies as one of the coolest days I had in Esquel. I was glad I met Alejandro just in time for him to take us (me) to Nahuel Pan Hill. I did so much in Esquel that I thought I couldn't see anything more beautiful, but I was definitely missing the postcard from up there and luckily I was able to have it ❤️.
Además de ser el día de que casi "me da la pálida" por primera vez, este fue el día que más caminé hasta el día de hoy. En total, mi contador de pasos contó 30 km entre la ida y la vuelta, con subida empinada incluida y con todos esos pasos en vano intenando subir la montaña en ese terreno demasiado arenoso. A pesar del casi desmayo, del celular perdido, de faltar al trabajo (spoiler, no me retaron tanto) y de los pies llenos de ampollas al final, este califica como uno de los días más geniales que tuve en Esquel. Me alegró haber conocido a Alejandro justo a tiempo para que nos (me) lleve al Cerro Nahuel Pan. Hice tanto en Esquel que pensé que no podía ver algo más hermoso, pero definitivamente me faltaba la postal desde ahí arriba y por suerte pude tenerla ❤️.

No es por nada, pero que privilegio tan grande tienes tú, estas fotos son la que me hacen pesar que es lo mejor si vivir en la ciudad o vivir en una zona como esa donde vives tú, el solo hecho de poder andar por todos esos parajes me hacen pesar en eso, ciudad o ese lugar, ese lugar o ciudad, claro no pongo en duda que vivas en una ciudad donde tienes esos hermosos sitios, así de cerca que hasta caminando lo puedes recorrer.

Una vez me sentí un poco mal en un ascenso, una presión en la cabeza mientras subía a una cumbre en Mérida, aquí en Venezuela, a más de 3500 metros, pero me senté un rato a respirar profundo y tomar agua y se me pasó, "mal de páramo" le dicen.

But good thing you are safe. Though a lot of trials and slippery area during your journey, this amazing view on top is an incredible proof that you have witness another achievement as a traveler.
