Bosnia and Herzegovina is a beautiful country in Southeast Europe, next to our home country Croatia. It's relatively a small country and most of the territory consists of mountains and high karst, covered with forests and pastures. There are also lots of interesting towns with rich history, nice people and great, cheap food.
We decided to road trip through BiH at the beginning of the last year, in February. Just when we came back from our trip, the whole covid situation started to happen. So, that was our last journey before lockdown and all the mess with this stupid virus.
The first day of our trip was spent in Croatia because we didn't want to cross the border immediately. We came across some cute horses.
Throughout the whole trip which lasted one week, we slept in our car. I can't lie, it was really cold even with our high-quality sleeping bags.
The next day, we crossed the border and went to the city called Banja Luka. We just chilled there, drank Bosnian coffee, and ate burek. Burek is a traditional food made of a thin flaky dough such as filo with a variety of fillings, such as meat, cheese, spinach or potatoes. But locals often say that burek is made only with meat, and the other ones are called pite.
Later that day we went to the place called Krupa na Vrbasu and we spent some time walking in nature and enjoying our time there.
In the evening we decided to go to a town called Jajce to spend a night there. This was the only time we booked a hostel because we needed to take a shower and get some rest. It is a very nice town, and we tasted the best ćevapi ever! We found a restaurant Kod Asima and this was a hit! We felt like we came to some grandma's house and we were the only ones there. The food was cheap and everything was so tasty.
PS: ćevapi is a national dish of BiH. It's a grilled dish of minced meat and it's mostly served with fresh onion, kajmak (a creamy dairy food similar to clotted cream) or ajvar (a spread made of roasted peppers and eggplant) and somun (Balkan flatbread)
we took a fast pic because we couldn't wait to dig in
After a great rest, we headed to the capital city of BiH, Sarajevo. Along the way, we wandered around some places.
We parked our car and started exploring Sarajevo. This is one of my favourite cities, because of the whole special vibe and the best food ever! (ćevapi, burek, baklave!)
baklava with walnuts and pistachios (a layered pastry dessert made of filo pastry, filled with chopped nuts, and sweetened with syrup) 😋
the best burek in my life!
After walking around the city, we decided to go to Vrelo Bosne. It's a place where the Bosna river springs. You have to pay for the entrance, but the guy who worked there let us in for free. 😊
That's all for today's post, hope you like it! 😊
