Bulow Plantation Ruins in Florida

in Worldmappin5 months ago

We finally took a break and went out exploring a bit this week. One spot we went was to Bulow State Park which is home to Bulow Plantation Ruins. This is an old sugar mill and plantation from the 1800's. It was damaged during the Second Seminole War in 1836.
This portion of the park is near the towns of Ormond Beach and Flagler Beach Florida. The Bulow Plantation is about 150 acres inside the 5,600 acre Bulow Creek State Park. We found it an interesting place to visit, and will likely go there again given how close it is to us, and the very nice bicycle/walking trails throughout the park.

It appears to have been built in 1831, lasting only 5 years until destroyed and burnt by the Seminole Indians during the wars. Also rumored to be haunted with some folks reporting sightings of an
A lot of interesting trees here. I just love the moss hanging from the oak trees everywhere.
Found this cool tree along the woods trail nearby. What looked initially like a large hollowed out portion.
Actually turned out much larger than expected. Taller than me and large enough to walk through!
We also spotted a fairly good size Gopher Tortoise along the way. Probably about 15 inches across. We also saw a mama deer and two very young fawns on the way out, but did not get pics of those.

Yay! My first Worldmappin post! Was very pleased to see the old ones came across to the map. Got around much more than I thought the last few years.

This looks like a really cool place to take a stroll. How lucky that it is so close to you!

Dear god, man, don't leave us hangin'!! Sightings of an what?!

lol I got interrupted typing post and apparently distracted.. Was just sightings of an elderly man strolling about.. likely likely one or more of the old plantation owners. Didn't say if he was scalped or not, I think still wearing hat..

Hat is a good way to hide a scalping.

This seems like a very interesting place to visit, very tall trees and beautiful natural surroundings. I think the rumors that it is haunted make it even more interesting 😁

Seems like frequently ghost stories around some of these old places. The trees and moss hanging certainly adds to the theme.

Definitely! I loved reading what you wrote.

Bulow sounds quite German. Originally its actually called Bülow, or von Bülow. The von Bülows are a well known nobility family in Germany, since Victor von Bülow was about the most famous german comedian in TV since the 60s, known under his alias Loriot. He died a couple of years ago. Just have a look on YT, there is lot of his work.
It seems they had big plans back in the days, planning for a town called Bulow Ville there. What I dont understand is what Jan 76 1831 means.

Pretty sure the 76 is 26 for January 26. A lot of folks made the letters and numbers a little differently back then.

I have it mind to do a little exploring around the history of those southern plantations and the history those who worked them, owned them and the war that was, ostensibly, revolved around the situation owners and other commercial enterprises had created in a bid for cheap labour. It's one of the attractions of coming Stateside, you know me and history huh?

Yes, it's quite interesting to see some of these old buildings still around and get the scoop on them.
There is a way cool hand carved canoe on this site that isn't much more than a hollowed out tree trunk. It's behind glass and not able to get good photo of it. There's another good spot nearby we visited that also has some good history around it, but that's for another post. You can actually glimpse these ruins a bit on the google maps if you zoom in.

I find this stuff interesting, all history really, so I think I'd have to have an extended stay in America, so much to see.

Very much so, and so large. You could spend a week in each of multiple interesting and different states over here with many different things and sights. Definitely want some dinner and beer time if you get anywhere close! Our schedule a bit tied up for the next 3 months.

Oh yeah, I'll impose!

Remember European Vacation when Chevy Chase and his family drop in on that German family and stay...wasn't even their relatives. Lol.

Haha, yes, no beer wenches for you here though! You'll have to carry your own!

It looks like a nice place to visit with an interesting story. I don't know much about the historical facts from over there, so your post was very interesting to read and to appreciate the pictures

Thanks for that, there's much more info about it and other pics available on the state parks website if you google it up. It's in Bulow Creek state park.

Thanks for the info! I'll look it up
