Conocer La Habana no es cuestión de una semana, es tarea de mucho tiempo. Es una ciudad inmensa y llena de una riqueza cultural que se desborda a cada paso. Entre los tantos sitios emblemáticos de esta urbe, hay uno que visité recientemente y luego de conocerlo, no me explico como no había ido antes allí: La plazuela del Àngel, ubicada en las calles Compostela y Cuarteles, en la Habana Vieja, escenario de una novela que dio lugar a uno de los más conocidos mitos nacionales, cuya trama se desarrolla en esta hermosísima zona de la ciudad cinocida como La Loma del Ángel.

Getting to know Havana is not a matter of a week; it is a task that takes a long time. It is an immense city overflowing with cultural richness at every turn. Among the many emblematic sites of this city, there is one I recently visited, and after seeing it, I can't understand how I hadn't been there before: Plazuela del Ángel (Angel's Little Square), located on Compostela and Cuarteles streets in Old Havana. It is the setting of a novel that gave rise to one of the most well-known national myths, a story that unfolds in this beautiful area of the city known as La Loma del Ángel (Angel's Hill).
Hay en la literatura cubana una obra escrita por Cirilo Villaverde, y si eres cubano, seguramente ya sabes que hablo de Cecilia Valdes o La Loma del Ángel. Esta obra es considerada la primera gran novela cubana por mostrar y criticar por primera vez a todos los estratos de la sociedad colonial cubana. La novela es una tragedia que narra la historia de una mestiza pobre y zalamera que se enamora, por accidente del destino, de su hermano blanco y aristócrata.
There is a work in Cuban literature written by Cirilo Villaverde, and if you are Cuban, you surely already know I'm talking about Cecilia Valdés or La Loma del Ángel. This work is considered the first great Cuban novel for being the first to portray and criticize all strata of Cuban colonial society. The novel is a tragedy that tells the story of a poor, charming mixed-race woman who, by a twist of fate, falls in love with her white, aristocratic brother.
La Plazuela del Ángel se encuentra ubicada muy cerca de la Iglesia del Santo Ángel Custodio, en La Habana Vieja, un lugar que envuelve en su magia al visitante.
The Plazuela del Ángel is located very clouse of the Church of Santo Ángel Custodio (Holy Guardian Angel) in Old Havana, a place that envelops visitors in its magic.
Frente a la iglesia, en la acera, hay una escultura de bronce de Cecilia Valdés, que fue colocada ahí en 2014. Y en la acera del frente se encuentra, desde 1846, un busto de Cirilo Villaverde, como si ambos se miraran. Me acerqué con una mezcla de asombro y curiosidad y toqué a Cecilia, la mulata de mirada triste y eternamente bella de la novela que marcó nuestra identidad, y por supuesto que me tomé varias fotos con ella.
In front of the church, on the sidewalk, there is a bronze sculpture of Cecilia Valdés, placed there in 2014. And on the opposite sidewalk, there has been a bust of Cirilo Villaverde since 1846, as if the two are looking at each other. I approached with a mix of awe and curiosity and touched Cecilia, the mulatta with the sad gaze and eternally beautiful from the novel that shaped our identity, and of course, I took several photos with her.
Then I crossed and saw Cirilo up close, the writer, the man who imagined her and gave her life on pages that have defied time. They are not monuments on pedestals but human figures, almost alive, that invite conversation.
Si se fijan un poquito podran notar que las siglas iniciales de los nombres del autor y el nombre de la obra, son las mismas: CV. ¿Casual o intencional? Eso solo lo sabe Cirilo. Hay un dato curioso que tal vez muchos no sepan, la imagen de Cirilo fue robada en 1993, aunque gracias al esfuerzo de la Policía Especializada en Patrimonio, solo llegó a estar desaparecida por un día.
If you look a little, you will notice that the initial initials of the author's name and the work's title are the same: C.V. Coincidence or intentional? Only Cirilo knows. There is a curious fact that perhaps many do not know: Cirilo's bust was stolen in 1993, although thanks to the efforts of the Specialized Heritage Police, it was only missing for a day.
En conversación con un vecino de la zona supe que “Cirilo”, como llaman a la imagen, tiene una importancia vital para ellos pues ha acompañado sus vidas por décadas como un fiel vigilante y amigo. Lamento no haber podido entrar al Templo de la Iglesia del Santo Ángel Custodio porque en ese momento estaba cerrada. En este templo, de estilo neogótico, fueron bautizados Félix Varela y José Martí, Julián del Casal y la bailarina Alicia Alonso.
In conversation with a local resident, I learned that "Cirilo," as they call the bust, is vitally important to them, as it has accompanied their lives for decades like a faithful guardian and friend. I regret not being able to enter the Temple of the Church of Santo Ángel Custodio because it was closed at that time. In this neo-Gothic temple, Félix Varela and José Martí, Julián del Casal, and the dancer Alicia Alonso were baptized.
Al rededor de la Plazuela, hay varios negocios que le dan atractivo al área y ofrecen lugares para el descanso y el consumo gastronómico. En una de sus esquinas se encuentra el Café del Ángel. Allí vi a dos cantantes en plena acción y hasta "eché un pasillo".
Around the Plazuela, there are several businesses that add charm to the area and offer places to rest and dine. On one corner is the Café del Ángel. There I saw two singers in full performance and even "threw in a few dance steps" ("eché un pasillo").
Muy cerca de alli, también hay un restaurante que se especializa en cocina al carbón, que da un gusto exquisito a la comida.
Very close by, there is also a restaurant that specializes in charcoal-grilled cuisine, which gives the food an exquisite flavor.
Yo me sentía atrapada en el tiempo y sin embargo, a mi alrededor, la vida de La Habana seguía fluyendo, los turistas con sus cámaras curiosas (como la mía) y niños corriendo. Al retirarme del lugar, tuve la extraña sensación de que me despedía de dos viejos conocidos y prometí volver.
I felt trapped in time, and yet, around me, Havana's life kept flowing: tourists with their curious cameras (like mine) and children running. As I left the place, I had the strange sensation that I was saying goodbye to two old acquaintances, and I promised to return.
Esta plazoleta ya nunca más me será ajena, no es un simple punto en el mapa para mí, es un lugar de encuentro a donde quiero llevar a mis amigas y amigos del mundo de la literatura. Este es un lugar de gran belleza donde la literatura y la historia se pueden tocar con las manos.
This little square will never be foreign to me again; it is not just a point on the map for me. It is a meeting place where I want to take my friends from the world of literature. This is a place of great beauty where literature and history can be touched with your hands.
