Hacer esta visita era otra de las tantas tareas que tenía pendiente y fui tan afortunada, que a pesar de que solo reciben al público los miércoles, fui atendida ayer por una amable señora que, luego de que le dije que yo venía de lejos, de Punta Brava, me hizo un recorrido con mucho gusto.

This visit was another of the many things I had pending, and I was so fortunate that, even though they are only open to the public on Wednesdays, I was assisted yesterday by a kind lady who, after I told her I had come from far away, from Punta Brava, gave me a tour with great pleasure.
Al entrar, lo primero que vi fue una exposición de fotografía. Y dos cuadros inmensos y bellos en ambas paredes de la sala.
Upon entering, the first thing I saw was a photography exhibition. And two immense, beautiful paintings on both walls of the living room.
Esta casa llamó la atención de los habaneros durante años por su deterioro, sus techos se veían rotos a simple vista, despertando la curiosidad de muchos y la mía también, por supuesto. Luego de una intensa restauración, hoy cautiva por lucir como nuevos sus encantos originales.
This house caught the attention of Habaneros for years due to its deterioration—its roofs appeared broken at first glance, sparking the curiosity of many, and mine as well, of course. After an intense restoration, it now captivates by showcasing its original charms as if they were new.
De estilo renacentista, la casa de las tejas verdes, como es llamada de forma popular por lo que es evidente, se encuentra ubicada en la entrada de Quinta Avenida de Miramar y calle 2, al oeste de La Habana, justo después de cruzar el túnel. En sus inicios fue una vivienda.
Of Renaissance style, the House of the Green Tiles, as it is popularly called for obvious reasons, is located at the entrance of Quinta Avenida in Miramar and Calle 2, west of Havana, just after crossing the tunnel. In its beginnings, it was a residence.

Today, it is not a museum as many think; it is the Cultural Promotion Center for the Study of Modern, Contemporary, and Future Architecture, Urban Planning, and Interior Design. How did it become what it is today? Let me tell you with a bit of history.
La Casa de las Tejas Verdes destaca en su entorno por la belleza y originalidad de su arquitectura. Fué construida para un señor adinerado, quien también destaca por haber sido Mayordomo en el Palacio Presidencial durante el gobierno de Mario García Menocal. El ex Mayordomo compró el terreno en 1925 y encargó la obra que fue construida, en tan sólo diez meses, estando lista en 1926. No imaginó cual habrá sido el salario de ese Mayordomo para lograr construir una casa como esa.
The House of the Green Tiles stands out in its surroundings for the beauty and originality of its architecture. It was built for a wealthy man, who is also notable for having been the Head Butler at the Presidential Palace during the government of Mario García Menocal. The former butler bought the land in 1925 and commissioned the work, which was built in just ten months and completed in 1926. I can only imagine what the salary of that butler must have been to build a house like that.
La casa fue vendida a una compañía y más tarde vendida a la Srta. Luisa Catalina Rodríguez Faxas, una joven de 20 años de edad, quien había adquirido una herencia paterna, parte de la cual empleó en la compra de este inmueble, donde vivió acompañada durante los últimos años de su vida por una sobrina de su segundo esposo. Cuando fallece, Luisa dejó la casa a su sobrina política. Esta última falleció también a los pocos meses, sin dejar herederos, y es por eso que en el año 2000 la casa pasó a la custodia del Gobierno Cubano.
The house was sold to a company and later to Ms. Luisa Catalina Rodríguez Faxas, a 20-year-old woman who had inherited money from her father, part of which she used to purchase this property. There, she lived during the last years of her life accompanied by a niece of her second husband. When she passed away, Luisa left the house to her niece-in-law. The latter also died a few months later without leaving heirs, which is why, in 2000, the house came under the custody of the Cuban government.
Esta casa estuvo casi diez años cerrada, hasta 2010 que es reabierta, luego de haber sido restaurada por la Oficina del Historiador, bajo la dirección de Eusebio Leal, Historiador de la Ciudad de La Habana.
This house remained closed for almost ten years until 2010, when it was reopened after being restored by the Office of the Historian under the direction of Eusebio Leal, Historian of the City of Havana.
Según supe, los interiores están adornados con obras de arte que combinan el mobiliario contemporáneo con elementos del pasado, todo en dependencia del uso que se le da a los diferentes espacios. Así podemos ver una habitación convertida en sala de concierto con un hermoso piano.
As I learned, the interiors are adorned with works of art that combine contemporary furniture with elements of the past, all depending on the use given to the different spaces. In this way, we can see a room converted into a concert hall with a beautiful piano.
Durante mi recorrido pude ver que cuenta con tres plantas, ventanas muy grandes y techos inclinados recubiertos por tejas americanas de color verde, su elemento más singular. Es una construcción de mampostería y pisos de mármol con un portal corrido con tres frentes.
During my tour, I saw that it has three floors, very large windows, and sloping roofs covered with green American tiles—its most singular feature. It is a masonry construction with marble floors and a continuous porch with three façades.
Algo que llamó mi atención fue una gata que vi deambulando por todos los pisos. Al preguntar por ella, me dijeron que es como una mascota de la casa y se llama Luisa, como la antigua dueña de la residencia, que esa gata es el alma de doña Luisa que vaga por allí.
Something that caught my attention was a cat I saw wandering around all the floors. When I asked about her, they told me she is like a pet of the house and is named Luisa, like the former owner of the residence, and that this cat is the soul of Doña Luisa, wandering around there.
Todas las plantas se relacionan por una escalera en forma de caracol mientras, los pisos principales se conectan a través de una escalera de forma helicoidal enchapada con piezas de mármol y baranda de hierro con pasamanos de madera.
All the floors are connected by a spiral staircase, while the main floors are linked through a helical staircase clad with marble pieces and an iron railing with a wooden handrail.
El ático, fue transformado y destinado a Sala de Conferencias y de Navegación. Allí hay un gran mural hecho por el pintor cubano Bonachea. En las vacaciones, imparten talleres de apreciación y creación arquitectónica para niños que crean sus maquetas de cartón, papel, plástico, poliestireno y otros materiales.
The attic was transformed and designated as a Conference and Navigation Room. There, there is a large mural made by the Cuban painter Bonachea. During holidays, they offer workshops on architectural appreciation and creation for children, where they create their models using cardboard, paper, plastic, polystyrene, and other materials.
También el jardín fue restaurado con un proyecto de paisajismo francés que exhibe, además, esculturas. La Casa de las Tejas Verdes es otra joya de la arquitectura de Cuba.
The garden was also restored with a French landscaping project that also features sculptures. The House of the Green Tiles is another jewel of Cuban architecture.

Before I arrived at the part with the piano I was thinking how nice it would be to have such a house, and that I would place a grand piano there... and there it is hahahaha. 🎹
