If you want to explore a truly awesome stretch of remote rocky coastline, it helps to have a water source on the route. My hike on the coastal stretch at the southernmost part of Africa called the Garden Route is ideal for travelers from all over the world. Today’s stretch took me to an inspiring sight which was this sweet waterfall to quench my thirst.

Hiking along the region known as Robberg Peninsula and surrounds, found in Plettenberg Bay, is one of the most private and intimate settings since it remains deserted for most of the time. It’s situated just behind the local airstrip, and is within walking distance from the landing strip for small planes.
Once you reach the cliff sides, it takes some effort to find the actual path down the steep cliff side at first. Initially I simply made my own path and used an old river stream to climb down to the sea level about 100 meters below. The climb is actually quite easy once you’ve done it a few times and as long as you are not afraid of heights.

Today’s waterfall section was a refreshing manifestation on the steep hike. I was able to get a clear glimpse of the ocean from the waterfall itself, and it feels very much like being alone on a deserted island, overlooking the vast empty ocean from the cliff sides. The vegetation contains small pockets of lush indigenous forest where one can camp or take shelter. And there is plenty of firewood.
The waterfall is currently quite small since it’s based on the rainfall which varies throughout the year. At present a little trickle flows over the edge and down the rock face to a pool below. The water is drinkable, and I have had small samples on occasion. One could of course also boil it for further use. This part of the Cape province tends to remain greener throughout the year, compared to much of the rest of the region, which is drier.

I see it as naturally opulent in that regard, by African standards. That’s why this stretch of coastline is called the Garden Route. It remains one of the top travel destination in the country today for those who know about it’s glories and opulence.
If you get a chance to make a tour of Africa then I recommend visiting the Garden Route and Particularly Plettenberg Bay. And when in Plett, as locals call it, see if you can locate Robberg Peninsula and also the airstrip just nearby. On that western shoreline of the peninsula behind the airport, you will discover these awesome cliffs for your hikes, and if you are really lucky, then you will discover this little stream on your path.
