A Palace of Colonial Havana [EN/ES]

English Version

When we think of a palace, the imagination leads us to think of golden halls, very high ceilings, and gardens that fade into the distance. However, in colonial-era Havana there were also homes that, due to their monumental architecture and sober elegance, were considered true palaces. One of these small palaces rises on one side of the renowned Catedral Square in Old Havana, the Palace of the Marquis of Arcos.

This small palace, although less ostentatious than the great halls of Europe, also tells a story. Its thick walls, the tall arches that frame its entrances, the wide windows and the spacious inner courtyard full of shade and freshness, and its balconies with delicate ironwork show us an architecture that is simpler, but imbued with the power and distinction of the aristocracy of its time.

This two-story and large scale dwelling has two entrances. One of them faces Mercaderes Street, where right in front of the main gate there is a large-format mural that represents several intellectuals of Cuban culture, figures who marked an era and who today are recognized for their legacy in the history and culture of the country.

The building, due to its historical and architectural value, has been restored by the Office of the Historian of the City. Thanks to this effort, today it is preserved and looks as it did in its days of greatest splendor, becoming one of the most beautiful buildings that surround the square. Access is open to the public with completely free entrance, which allows both locals and foreign visitors to enjoy its beauty without barriers.

Inside it we find spaces dedicated to culture and art, a hall consecrated to goldsmithing, where pieces of great delicacy are exhibited, and a literary café that invites a moment of pause.

What I most enjoy about this grand dwelling is the abundance of arcades that adorn its design, both in the interior and in its wide exterior portal. That is why I have no doubts when I hear it said that this is one of the most outstanding residences of its time, and that it is considered one of the most representative buildings of colonial residential architecture in Havana, since its majesty speaks for itself.
