Every year, when the sunset is replaced by the full moon of the 12th month (lunar calendar), it's the time of Loy Krathong festival and it was yesterday. Surprisingly, this day is not a public holiday in Thailand.

So yesterday afternoon we picked up our youngest after school, then headed to Karon, making a quick stop at Patong beforehand to watch the sunset (but that will be the subject of another post 😉 ).

This festival also known as the festival of lights is a derivative of the Hindu festival of Divālī where the goddess of the Ganges is thanked with floating lanterns for the dispensation of life throughout the year.

The Legend says that the festival was brought to the Sukhothai kingdom by King Pra-Ruang who wanted to create a Thai version of it. This Thai version also symbolizes the fact of starting again on the right foot by abandoning resentments and angers.

The Krathong (which means raft) was originally made from banana tree trunk for the base and then from banana tree leaves assembled for the decoration on which flowers, candle and 3 incense were placed. Nowadays we can find them in any shape and any biodegradable material.

Less popular in the South of Thailand than in the North, where usually takes place wonderful release of flying lanterns made of paper (unfortunately prohibited this year), the best spot I can recommend on the island of Phuket is at the lake of Karon beach (at the entrance of the beach when you come from Patong).

Definitely the most animated place to enjoy this festival! As soon as we arrive, we are greeted by the thai Street Food motorbike's.

As we were starving we went to one of the many restaurants of the place with their menu which weighs 3 kilos and where it takes 15 minutes to see all the pages of Thaï food, sea food, beef food, pork food, chicken food, duck food, European food.... 😂

Once full we walked around the place, attending a few shows as well as a great Jacky Tuning Sound System Show in Thai style and that's something!

Then the time came to get closer to the lake while having bought our Krathong previously. If you thought I was going to spend my day trying to make one with my own hands and moreover one that floats for more than thirty seconds, you are very wrong Hahaha.

My son being extremely fast the launching was as well, it will surely be an incredible gamer 😂

We enjoyed the place a bit more before heading back home, after another great day in the land of smiles.
