I have vivid memories of the last time we took the cross channel ferry from England to France, landing in the port of Cherbourg in Normandy on the North coast of France.
It was a beautiful summers day. The sun was shining, the sky was mostly cloudless and the water was a stunning blue in colour.
A number of yachts were enjoying the day and sailing around the harbour.
The port is huge and it has a large outer wall which is fairly far out. Its well fortified which I assume was from world war 2.
As we turned into the harbour, everyone was out on deck to take in the views - it really was a stunning day ! I love the picture above and how it shows the curved wake along the path the ferry took.
And the pic above gives some perspective on the size of the port and the extent of the outer wall - mahoosive !
It was a lovely watching the yachts zipping around - they must have been having a fantastic time ! What a day for a sail !
Some of the outer defenses were quite damaged, I assume having taken a battering during the war.
The blues were just stunning. The building above certainly looks like a defensive bunker. You can see how thick the walls are, and the rounded edges were to help deflect blasts and shells. In the foreground on the left are two black fish farm cages. I'm not sure what type of fish they would keep there - possibly Atlantic Salmon.
The pic above shows some land that had been reclaimed from the sea at some point. I love the green algae on the rocks showing the average high tide line.
And in the pic above the coastguard appear to be out checking on one of the navigation guides.
It certainly was a stunning day, and I remember the excitement of arriving in France for the start of our vacation. We worked our way along the north coast of France from Cherbourg to Calais - it was a great time !
I really enjoyed seeing the Port - I dont ever recall seeing one quite as large. And the weather certainly made it all very photogenic ! I really do enjoy looking back at these pics - the blues are so captivating and it was great to see the yachts enjoying a sail on such a beautiful day !
