The Capela dos Ossos, Evora. Portugal: Bones and Christmas

in Worldmappin6 months ago

The Chapel of Bones in Evora, was built in the 16th C by Franciscan monks. it is believed to hold the bones of over 5,000 people, rehoused from neighbouring graveyards.

“We bones, are here, waiting for yours.”

Inside the Chapel hangs a poem, attributed, it is said to Fr. António da Ascenção Teles, who was the parish priest from 1845 to 1848.

Where are you going in such a hurry, traveler?
Pause...do not advance your travel.
You have no greater concern than this one:
That which is now before your eyes.

Recall how many have passed from this world,
Reflect on your similar end.
There is good reason to do so;
If only all did the same.

Ponder, you so influenced by fate,
Among the many concerns of the world,
So little do you reflect on death.

If by chance you glance at this place,
Stop ... for the sake of your journey,
The longer you pause, the further on your journey you will be.

It probably makes more sense in the native language it was written in.

A special resting place, apparently for one of the founding Franciscan Monks....who knows?

It's getting to look a lot like Christmas

Not what one would expect to see adjoining the Chapel of Bones, a permanant display of all things Christmas!

The Canha da Silva Nativity Collection consists of over 2.5k different displays and figures from over 80 countries. The collection has been gathered over a great many years by Major-General Fernando Canha da Silva and his wife Fernanda.

The collection was first put on public display in 1999, it is so large that only about 25% of it can be displayed at any one time.

Oh my days what would jesus say.

It is certainly weird wacky and wonderful

Bones a good reminder to go for cremation rather than left to who knows what end. Rare occasion or rich, given a cot to display more comfort, separatism?

Major-General Fernando Canha da Silva and his wife Fernanda, a collection or distraction, did they have children?

!BEER

cremation is the way to go, not sure about him having kids, I recall them being quite devout in their religion, each to their own I guess

Yup one cannot say how to live then or now.

That's so creepy 😣

LOL....Nah.

What a charming but scary chapel, the many skeletons are cool but quite scary!!

cheers @noemilunastorta thanks for dropping in, charming is a good word, but it all looked a bit to "staged" really. I like death related stuff so didn't feel the spooky atmosphere

Wow, so cool, but so creepy too!

How did it feel walking around seeing all the bones, knowing that you were surrounded by so many people?

Did it feel a bit spooky?

hi, it was weird seeing how someone had created arty displays out of old bones, that kind of killed the spookiness as it looked staged if you get my meaning....Now if it had been dark with bits of flesh hanging off LOL

Yeah right, fair point, I can see that.

Well one mans (or thousands) of trash is one mans treasure...🤣

Lucky they weren't fresher...you'd smell them before you saw them in the dark. 😬

you'd smell them before you saw them in the dark.
GROSS! lol
