Aveiro stands on the edge of a coastal lagoon system, often dubbed the Venice of Portugal thanks to its small network of canals. (one hell of a lot of poetic licence with that statement to be quite honest with you, it is not in the same league!).
No gondolas, Aveiro has moliceiros, colourful boats traditionally used for seaweed harvesting but with the decline in the industry most have been repurposed and used for "canal cruises". As it was just a short stop to eat and drink, (mostly seafood restaurants, so in my case mainly drinking and eating crisps) and a short stroll around a very underwhelming town.
The region was well known for many years for the harvesting of sea salt and moliço seagrass, the latter used as fertiliser before the development of chemicals. Now it doesn't seem to have a lot going for it, reliant on tourism in the main.
For such a small area, but with a high student population, there was a pretty fine selection of art dotted about.
Love this one, is it an homage to the previous life of the town?
10 years and still looking good despite the salty air blowing in off the Atlantic.
Oh yeuch a cat! done by the same artist, he is pretty damn talented
Behave!
