A man and his boots

I wasn't hiking naked with just my boots on, I was wearing clothes too! I thought I'd better get that out there right up front...Although there was this one time, back a while, when I went hiking and...That's a whole different post and one I'd have to word carefully. 😉

Anyway, as you might be able to tell I got a pretty legit hike in today, four hours all up although I had a sit down here and there also. I'm not sure how much ground I covered, I'd say fifteen kilometres all up considering I wasn't going very fast and stopped for photos, to admire the scenery, listen to the birds and just sit with nature a little.

Warren Reservoir

My hike was actually a recce, reconnaissance, mission for an area I'd not hiked before and an area at the Warren Reservoir that I'd been told had a large trailer-friendly car park, picnic grounds and water access for kayaks.

My usual spot is very small holding only about six cars and no trailers; since the State Government opened this reservoir to non-permit recreational kayaking and kayak-fishing with a permit it's been difficult to get a park unless I'm there at 06:00. I heard about this new spot and figured I'd check it out.

When I got there I realised the area was far better set up than my usual spot so when I go yakking I'll put-in at this spot from now on. It has a loop road and loads of car parking so there'll be no need to back my trailer up (the trailer holds the kayaks) and no worries about lack of parking. I didn't grab any photos of it as there were too many people, kids and car number plates around so I felt it might not be prudent to get an image and post it here. You'll have to picture it in your minds eye.

20211002_141902.jpg

A small part of the reservoir above. I'm not sure what the capacity of the reservoir actually is but it's pretty big, and just up the road from the next one that is even bigger.

It's been so great for the State Government to open up a few reservoirs to recreational kayaking and fishing; I know it happens in other places and I suppose they didn't want to do it here for fear the water we drink could become contaminated. They did some studies on the environmental impact though and I guess decided it'd work out ok. It means people who would normally have to drive quite a way to get their yaks into water can do so reasonably close to the main city of Adelaide. This spot is about thirty minutes from my front door and the drive is stunningly beautiful.

After scouting around satisfying myself that this spot it\s totally legit I hooked my hydration system around my shoulders and headed off into the forest for a hike. I knew I'd not see many, if any, people in there which suited me fine and I was looking forward to the human-silence I knew I would find, but the sounds of nature which I love.

20211002_133721_2.jpg

For me there's something cathartic about hiking, the motion of one foot in front of the other, and pine forests are so great for it, especially after the rain we've been having as it's quite wet underfoot; perfect for masking the sounds of my walking. There air is often quite still in there also which is nice.

I walked in and looked up above me where the trees contrasted pleasingly with the blue sky and felt deep contentment. I'm no photographer, but there's a snap above although in real life it was way better.

As I walked the birds kept me company and I revelled in the fresh air. It was a very nice day today, about 21 degrees and sunny, which made for excellent hiking weather. It was really cool to walk along with the waters of Warren Reservoir on one side and the pines on the other. Of course the ever-present Australian gum trees were nice company also.

20211002_134238_2.jpg

The pine forests around these parts are all commercial, meaning they are planted for logging purposes when mature enough.

They rotate the crop of course, rest the ground, and sometimes bush fires sweep through here and totally wipe them out as happens at the end of 2019. But there's always enough forest to have a decent hike and today that's exactly what I did. I was so peaceful and relaxing, and people-free despite it being school holidays.

This image above shows a few snaps in the pine forest area. Top left is a bog-hole which demonstrates just how much rain we've had lately. I grabbed the image of the emu warning sign on the road for fun. You'll not see one of these signs outside of Australia! On the road today I passed kangaroo signs, echidna and koala signs and this one above.

The below set of images are also from the forest. The moss growing there is all over the place, a testament to how moist it stays. Really moist. Super moist. Also, here and there one will find fallen or cast-off trees that the Earth is slowly reclaiming. It's a slow process but over time the tree will just disappear altogether. In the lower right image below you can see one in an advances stage of decay and new one growing.

About mid-hike I decided to pay homage to my very legit 5.11 Tactical boots with a photo and some words of praise. No, I didn't really talk to my boots. Much.

I didn't think it all through very well though as once I took the boots off the ground wet my socks pretty well so...Hiking with wet socks...Not legit. Still I grabbed the photo and think it came out well. Trust me folks, there's nothing like having the right boots as the wrong ones can be painful! I've learned that lesson the hard way. Paying respect to one's boots is a thing you know.

I also sat there for a while, on that felled log in the main image above, to listen to nature, dry my socks out a little, and let the sounds of the world settle upon me. It probably sounds like a cliché but the sounds of nature is like music to me - It reaches inside. I've been feeling a little out of sorts recently so it was a welcome interlude and I walked away better for it; more settled and centred.

My afternoon at Warren Reservoir was exactly what I needed. The exploratory mission to scout out the car park and kayak spot was a huge success but, if I'm honest, it was more about being away from society, deep within nature and deep within my thoughts; I find I'm more in-tune in those moments. I find value there.

Thanks for reading, I appreciate it.

Beauty!

It's a great spot for sure! The whole area is great for hiking and is well-worth a visit.

I know! 😁 I'm in Williamstown right now, and staying on the banks of the Warren Res tonight

Legit! A great spot. Probably nice and peaceful up there right now. Cold too.

Yeah, was chilly at times. Copped a bit of rain too, but today is beautiful. Coming up to Kersbrook shortly. You ever walked the Warren Tower Trail? I was blown away. Beautiful place

I have walked a bit of that a while ago, not enough though. Kersbrook is nice, I have a mate who lives there and another with a big farm between there and Williamstown. Lovely part of the world and yeah, today is a nice day. Enjoy!

Thank you! Will do 😊

Hey, just wondering...

Where's a good place to eat in Kersbrook?

What a great place to go exploring. I'm glad you were able to find some solitude and solace amongst the trees as well as a new spot that you seem pleased with. Your photos are magnificent and I can understand why you took a liking to the place.

When I find a trustworthy kid sitter I think I'll go get lost in nature somewhere too.... Tsitsikamma beckons.

Hmmm talking of boots - I need to mend mine before heading out anywhere. No real substitute for good boots when you're out in the bundu!

Cheers Galen
Have a good one

Ranger Andy

I recently looked this up and saw a video on the Tsitsikamma area and it looks pretty cool. I'd like to get there someday, take a look around for myself and see what's up. I'll bring my boots.

Have a good weekend Andy. Try and find a few moments for yourself, to think about the wonderful things around you and to settle back and be ok.

Yes, your boots will love Tsitsikamma! I'm sure you'll like it too lol. Some spoilers attached for you from the last time I was there. Not the best quality sorry, but will give you an idea.

Thanks G-dog, I will find balance again, I always do :)

Have a good one.

Great snaps! That second one...Looks like a nice spot for a little picnic and all. The sound of moving water and all. So nice. Thanks for sharing the pictures. One day maybe I'll get there and see for myself.

Looks like an awesome hike man! We are hopefully going to go for one this weekend. Working a little extra today to enjoy some time with the family the rest of the weekend. Heading to the mountains!

I honestly thought that emu crossing sign was a duck crossing sign hahaha. Certainly won’t see one of those outside of Australia!

The area you live in seems to be very nice and lush. Of course it’s just from the photos you share of it but it’s not what I thought Australia was. I was picturing a lot of Utah type desert but I guess I’m being stereotypical.

It's great that you found a new spot to go kayaking. I haven't been in years but I love it. On the list for us to do with the little man that's for sure!

A lot of Australia is arid, yes. However a lot of it is tropical and sub tropical with dense rain forest. We have forested mountain ranges, wet lands, high-county where it snows, deserts, vast open plains...Everything really. Some YouTube videos will demonstrate.

I hope you get your hike!

Ok, did not need that image of "just boots" in my head. Is that some snake scales I still see on those boots? Do the snakes like to maybe crawl into them at night for warmth? lol Just thought I'd give you some creepy things to think about. Don't forget to check those boots before putting on!

Lol...Trust me, the just my boots image is not one anyone wants to linger upon. 😆

Nice pictures @galenkp I can smell those pine trees, and as for those boots, they're made for walking. Seems like you had a great hike. Go well, thanks for sharing.

It was a great few hours. I'll admit that it began with a Cornish pasty at the Williamstown bakery and ended with a coke and cake at the same location as I drove back through...But in truth it was the bits in the middle that were the best. 😀

When we went to Australia I had one of those pies, I haven't tasted another that was as good as the Australian pies, the pastry was awesome. Glad you had a good walk. Stay safe and have a good day.

Hey there...Saying no to an Aussie pie or Cornish pasty is pretty hard!

Have a great weekend. 😀

Outdoors is the best medicine along with apple a day! Great area to explore, expansive piece of water with trees reaching to the sky.

Now those wet boots, not ideal, will get you back, only one person to blame for boots either wrong selection or wet 😆 have a great day further,

The boots weren't wet, just my socks after I took the boots off. I didn't mind too much.

Sturdy boot, looks like many miles done in them. Airing the feet, drying socks out, refreshing before continuing the walk.

wow amazing view, the pictures are great, the pine trees are very beautiful I like to see them.

Where I come from they are very scarce, however when I get to see one I feel excited,
Besides I enjoy nature very much, going for a walk in a forest for me is another level, just hearing the sound of the trees, the wind, the birds singing, the tranquility, the silence, the smell of humidity, it's fascinating. I liked it very much, I congratulate you.

Thank you for you nice comment, I really appreciate you taking to time to do so. I hope yo have a great weekend and maybe even take a walk in the forest too!

It's always good to explore a new area like that :) And even better when nobody else wants to be out there!

Yeah, I'm often critical of the bulk of societies reluctance to get into the wilderness...But it leaves more space for me when I'm out there so I kind of like it. Less people equals more enjoyment from my perspective.

Hey, it's their loss! Why invite everyone out there to make it more like the city?

a testament to how moist it stays. Really moist. Super moist.

Moist? Moist. Moist! Moist.

Have some moist !PIZZA, it's delish!

Lol...I don't know why but so many people hate the word moist. I figured I'd overuse it, because to me that's funny.

Love those boots! Wonderful hike and I hope you managed to dry your feet to toasty warmth.

They are legit, hence my photographic homage. I may have sat there and chatted with them a little too.

Mind melding with boots. I can't argue with that. Very legit.

I wasn't hiking naked with just my boots on

Now that's something to try out.

We have those pine forests around here too, all planted to extract resin, but they kinda destroy the soil.

These ones end up at the saw mill; I'm not sure on the life cycle but there's a massive area set out for the forests, enough to get lost in that's for sure.

Dad told me not even snakes like to live under those trees, not sure why. At least there's plenty to hang a hammock \o\

Hammocks are cool...snakes are not. So, seems like a perfect combination: No snakes and loads of hammock-hanging space!

Win win indeed hah

great post I like the picture as well and I also think boots are very important in hiking

Thank you. It was a really nice hike and it feels great to add a new spot to my long list of hiking places.

What a great post Galen - and those sure look like a great pair of boots - great photo. The other photographs in your post are also excellent - and your writing - is great too. You make one feel the place - thank you.

Thank you mate, I try to take the best shots I can but I'm not much of a photographer. The same with the writing; I can only do my best. Thanks for your comments.

Don't undersell yourself - your photographs are excellent - as with your storytelling.

Thank you bro, that's a much appreciated compliment. 😀

I don't dish out compliments easily - you deserve that one.

I don't dish out 100% votes for comments often but here's one. 😁

Hey bro - most unexpected and thank you - most welcome

Have a good time, to explore the bushes in the forest, sometimes I do that too.

Its beutiful

Yes indeed, that's why I used that particular picture in my post. I took it on my phone.

Kayaking sounds really nice tho.

On the road today I passed kangaroo signs, echidna and koala signs and this one above.

This is one of the reasons why I am scared of moving to Australia. I don't like animals.

Snakes, Cats, kangaroos.. Its a no no for me

Don't forget sharks, crocodiles, blue ring octopus, box jellyfish, spiders...I wonder though, where are you going to live where they don't have animals?

Wonderful natural scenery, @galenkp.

Thank you, it was a nice spot for a hike.

I hope you have a good weekend.

Finding new places is so exciting! At least to me. Enjoyed reading your post, especially the beginning. 🤣
Also photos look amazing!!

Thank you, they're just phone photos but I think they tell the story. Also, the beginning part of my text...Might as well have a bit of fun huh?

Thanks for your comment. 😊

I'm no photographer, but there's a snap above although in real life it was way better.

Yet you took amazing pictures 😅. Looks like you had a great time too

It was a great day from the hike and the weather perspective. Thanks for your comment.

Lovely photography and awesome scenery 👍👍

Thank you, it was a nice hike and a nice spot I'll be going back to. 😬

so beauty ...

Yeah, pretty nice indeed.

Stunning photos Galen! Especially the 3rd one with the trees contrasting colour to the sky.
I could let myself loose in a place this beautiful.
It's great when you take the time to enjoy and appreciate these little things.
Shame you experienced such kind of moisture on your feet, but I'm sure they're dry and warm now.
BTW, my brain and eyes weren't coordinating when I read the first line, so I saw:
"I WAS hiking blah, blah, blah, I wasN'T blah, blah, blah..."
However, the story turned out different but exceptionally beautiful, as I do love outdoor spaces with greenery, water, and lots of wood!
A weekend well spent:)

Thanks Milly; it was a nice hike and pretty relaxing really. I didn't mind the wet socks, anything for a chance to take a photo of my boots and pay homage to their awesomeness. Lol.

Hiking naked wasn't even close to what I was thinking! You hike naked? Nevermind. I really don't want to know.

Really!

I actually had my mind more on the boots on the ground paying homage to your mate kind of thing. I know pilots do the missing man fly over, our calvary does the riderless horse, Army paratrooper and others do the boots... I'm not sure why I did. The picture vaguely symbolic of it, and you are that kind of guy.

It's beautifully peaceful up there, sounds like a new place is in order for you.

I read it when it came out and darn if I ran out of time. I'm tired of saying I'm sorry, even if I am.

Hi, Galen!

I'm familiar with some of the ways units pay homage to their fallen; I htink it's a nice sentiment and tradition indeed.

You don't need to apologise, you have a lot going on at the moment and that has to take precedence. Not a problem.

Lovely pictures and everything is natural what a grate experience am sure you had a nice time @galenkp

Yep, it was a nice hike and one I'll do again.

Now you've given me boot envy! I thought I'd sourced a pair to use on the canals ( as the paths get a trifle muddy) but now I've seen these I need to up my game!

You know the old G-dog bro...He takes his boots seriously...And occasionally speaks about himself in the third person it seems. Lol.

5.11 Tactical is who make these boots Cam, you should be able to get them.

yup I been intamawebbing and found em! Very nice selection they have

Most of my stuff is 5.11 Tactical. They do pretty much everything I need and it's of excellent quality.

I think I will be needing a practical wardrobe overhaul now we are back in the UK on the canals. There's a place I need to visit in Leicester when I get back that still does military surplus stuff so I'll take a wander in there also

Yeah that's the way.

You know, it's always funny when people who know the business me see me by chance on the weekends. They don't recognise me. I've had people walk right by me. Maybe it's all the camo I wear? 😂
