Cascade D'enfer in the Pyrenees

in Worldmappin3 months ago

During our holiday this year we're staying in several places in Spain and France. This week we are in the Pyrenees in France; a beautiful mountainous area.
You can make quite a lot of nice hikes you can do over here. I've searched for some in the area of our campsite and found one that was close to the Cascade D'Enger. This is translated to the devils waterfall. That's something different than the angel falls in Venezuela.

It's such a nice area. The mountains are huge and there are so many trees. The path to the waterfall is located at the end of a valley. This is why you cannot hear any traffic of other noise when you are there. The only noise you hear at the start of the trail is the sound of the hydroelectric power station that gets it's power from the waterfall.

It's a quite challenging route. It's quite a climb and there are many rocks on the path. We made the hike with our two teenagers. They don't like walking, let alone walking up 😄
The route up and down was in total about 5 kilometers, but because we had to climb over 300 meters we had some grumpy teens with us (we're also doing things they really like during our holiday, so sometimes they need to do things we like).

There are so many nice flowers and plants on the route. Because of the waterfall the area is quite moist which results in a lush fauna. There are a lot of ferns like the one below and near the small streams the rocks are covered with moss.

It's such an amazing green area. The views from every point during the route are just so beautiful. Because it was quite exhausting we had the time to enjoy it and make some nice photographs.

During the hike the path crossed the waterfall a few times. They have built nice little stone bridges across the waterfall.

There are just so many trees! In the back you see a couple of mountains that even are a bit higher. These peaks are so high that there don't grow any trees.
The tree line typically ranges from 2,000 to 2,500 meters

It's beautiful to see how the water has worn away the stone. Over thousands of years it created an opening in between the rocks.

Near the larger drops of the waterfall it's really nice and cool. There is quite a lot of damp which is the result of the water that drops from such high heights. It's perfect to cool down a bit since the temperature was getting higher as well and the hike quite tiring.
(I'm submitting the following photo for the #aroundtheworld challenge)

And the water was just so fresh! There were quite some nice places to make pictures of the stream.

After 2,5 kilometer there was a viewpoint. It was a kind of stone balcony that was created against the rocks. From that point you had a perfect view on the waterfall.

The water dropped about 30 meters on that spot. It made so much noise that you could hardly hear eachother. The combination of the water and the sun resulted in a cool rainbow in the following picture.

I just couldn't stop taking pictures of the different waterfalls during the hike

This one was on the way back. Going down was a bit easier than going up, but you really had to be careful not to slip on the rocks that sometimes were a bit wet and loose.
And waling down is quite tough for your knees as well.

The water was so fresh and clean that we decided to fill our bottles which were already empty at that time. It was really nice and cold water.

If you are ever in this area, I can really recommend to make this trail. You do have to be in a somewhat good shape since it's quite a hard climb. But it's completely worth it I think.
