Graffiti Along The Canal

in Worldmappin3 years ago

Wen someone say canal, people usually think of Amsterdam's canals or the Brit ones, or the one in Hamburg, because not many cities have that. Those canals are amazing if you look at them as a tourist. I'm not sure if it is the same feeling when you live there. Locals are the only one to tell how it feels.

In any case, from touristic point of view it's great, especially if there's a boat service for tourists. When I visited the Cultural Palace in Targu Mures, I had to cross this canal, which toes parallel with the Mures river. It is a man made canal, created at the beginning of the 20th century, to create electricity for the city, but then it lost its purpose as the city started to grow and better, more efficient solution was needed. So the canal was left as it was but with no purpose.

It is a few km long, after which it goes back to the Mures river. There are not tourist boats here, actually there are no boats at all as the bridges are not high enough to allow that.

These beauties are the only ones to enjoy the water. I was so happy to see them and that I could take a few shots.

On the left side of the canal, there's a wall of a couple of kilometers, Don't ask me what purpose serves as I have no idea.

The wall was freshly painted and covered with graffiti. I think we can call it graffiti or murals? I'm pretty illiterate in this regards as there aren't many in Transylvania.

It was interesting to see all the themes as there are many and very different.

Having a closer look at the wall reveals that the whole thing was done to hide the deplorable state of the wall. The painting looks fairly fresh but I don't know how much it's going to last as the wall is already cracked.

I suppose this was a quick fix and most likely a cheap one as well. Don't know anything about the project, but in other countries the city buys the paint and artists work for free most of the time.

The problem with the quick fix can be visible on this piece already. It is sad because there are a few very good ones, that most likely took some time to create and will be destroyed very quickly.

This is a tribute to Farkas Bolyai, the great Hungarian mathematician, who lived between 1775 and 1856. There's a school named after him in Targu Mures.

This is a cool one, look at the details, isn't it amazing? And when I think all this will be history in a year or two ...

To get there, you need to go to the Aleea Carpati street, which is basically next to the river.

This arts makes the streets much brighter! I wish they would allow people on more places to make art! It would make the streets look so much more alive! Thanks for sharing :)

I agree with you, it is nice and interesting, however, it is also about property. You can't paint on private property. So it's not so easy.

there aren't many in Transylvania.

Quality over quantity! I love coming across graffiti/murals. A few years back it had become my hobby to go find hidden graffiti. But as many as we have here, they are not close to how excellent the graffiti you came across. The murals here are a different ball game.

I am not very good with the terminology either, but my guess is murals are large pieces of art that are painted on walls and graffiti is usually illegal.
