Visiting the most famous monument in the world is a great satisfaction and privilege, as it is the physical representation of an extraordinary being of vocation and transcendental spirit, such as the doctor of the poor, located in the state of Trujillo, Venezuela, in the municipality of Rafael Rangel, parish of Isnotu, an hour and a half from my home.

As you can imagine, it is a bit of a long journey, so it is advisable to pay for an express bus and enjoy the scenery for comfort. My parents, nephews, and son accompanied me. It had been approximately four years since I had last visited this Andean cultural heritage site, and my return was due to a miracle that had been granted.

At the time, I prayed devoutly for the opportunity to become a mother and made promises that I will keep to myself. Since science deemed it impossible due to problems with my reproductive system, I clung to that hope until the beginning of this year, when, on Three Kings Day, I found out that I had been given the greatest joy of all: the ability to conceive.

Based on my experience, my greatest gratitude is to bring offerings and pray for such a beautiful gift, and everything turned out just right: at the beginning of the year, the news of my pregnancy, and at the end of the year, the fulfilment of my promise.

This monument is located in Isnotu, a small town with helpful and hard-working people. Recently, the Bolivarian Government of Trujillo decided to decorate the walls with images related to religion and culture, due to the canonisation of our iconic Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, without neglecting the beautiful billboards in his honour at angles such as entrances to the place and its surroundings, bringing tourism to life.

Our stay in Isnotu can be summarised as follows:

@emily22.png

We arrived at 1pm. in warm weather, delighted with the good condition of the roads. The first thing we did was look for parking near the monument, which cost $1 per hour at the Venezuelan central bank rate.

On the way, we admired the most striking murals I have ever seen, pure art in all its splendour.

The parish square was full because they always hold retreats and friendly gatherings and family reunions in these parts. The streets are paved with concrete. (I forgot to take a photo as evidence because I got distracted by the murals).

On the way to the temple, we see in the distance the plaques of gratitude to Dr. José Gregorio Hernández that adorn the place. We manage to get photos from magazines, and once we are standing at the entrance to the grounds, we distribute ourselves as follows:

In the central part, we find the church named Santuario Niño Dios at the back.

To its left is the oldest statue of the venerated Dr. José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros, inside a small colonial-style house with Creole tiles and walls covered with plaques of gratitude. It has two advertising boards displaying his biography, and around it are two large special candelabra for placing candles or tapers, depending on the means of each devout worshipper.

At the back, we find a shop whose colonial façade is responsible for noting masses, intentions and even the sale of tickets to the museum. They also sell souvenirs such as plaster images, key rings, bracelets, shirts and paintings, all of which are beautiful and strikingly handcrafted. We can see novenas for any saint, all produced by the Diocese of Trujillo.

It offers first-class service. The cost of admission to the museum is $2 per adult, payable to the Central Bank of Venezuela. Children under the age of 7 enter free of charge. This fee helps to cover the costs of maintaining the museum.

Once we had purchased the tickets, three in total for my parents and myself, we headed to the site and the first thing we saw was the image carved in stone with the silhouette of Dr.

Upon entering the museum, we found a quiet, clean and bright place with granite floors, so you can appreciate its neatness at first glance. It is full of security cameras in every corner. The manager asks for tickets and stamps them, then gave a brief welcome speech and explained the museum rules, emphasising that we must not cross the yellow lines marked around each relic, the purpose of which is to prevent them from being touched and thus preserve each object. Video and photos are allowed, but without flash, and there is no time limit on the visit. The museum is air-conditioned, so it is cool, and has white lighting.

Compared to previous years, the museum has few relics, such as bedroom furnishings like a bed, display cabinet, and piano, all made of pure, intact wood, and a few other personal items such as his telephone, recipes, and notebooks with impressive Palmer-style handwriting, which is admirable in this day and age. These relics are kept in glass cases for preservation.

Evidence of his personal and professional life can be found in photos and large physical paintings with brief descriptions in every corner of the museum.

In my opinion, this prodigious human being, before being canonised, was my saint, my black man, my spiritual guide. Faith moves mountains, my people, and I can attest to that, despite society's disbelief.

Upon leaving the museum, we see a chapel in the form of a stone cave on its right side where the Virgin of Coromoto is located. On each stone there are beautiful words from her faithful devotees, either for the Virgin, for the Doctor, or for both.

On the right-hand side, there is a portable structure with petal-shaped trusses, sheltering a statue of Dr. Real, with a backdrop depicting the town as it was at that time, together with a beautiful colonial model representing his home.

In each section described, we find a tourism worker who helps us take family photos and offers us a warm welcome.

A pleasant weekend experience that reflects the importance of valuing every breath, every moment in this life, combined with enriching cultural and religious values and advancing human labour.

@emily22.png

WhatsApp Image 2025-12-11 at 2.33.24 PM.jpeg

WhatsApp Image 2025-12-11 at 2.33.28 PM (1).jpeg
