Well Hivers that 2 weeks want quick but I’m ending on a high with a visit to the Hobbiton film set near Matamata.

You can drive directly to the film set but it was easer to park up in Matamata at the information centre, and get the free bus out to the set.
Which is about 15km away and set in rolling hills and working farmland. The original Lord of the Rings film set for Hobbiton was just a facade of props and polystyrene but the farm still had people that wanted to visit to see where the movie was shot. So when they shot the Hobbit they decided to make it more permanent and build Hobbiton as a real hobbit village.
The tour lasts about 2 1/2 hours and explains many of the films tricks to make the hobbits looks smaller than the actors who played them. One of theses cinematic tricks is to have different size hobbit holes the hobbit actors were shot next to larger round entrance doors so they looked smaller.

While the other characters like the elves, men and wizards were filmed next to smaller scale doors which made them look bigger.

There are around 40 hobbit holes on the set and while most are just the doors and gardens they are themed for the occupations of the hobbits who live there. For example this is the home of the cheese maker.

And this is the house of the basket maker.
Probably the most famous hole on the set the home of Bilbo Baggins.
While most of the Hobbit holes are just front door movie props there was one we were allowed to enter that was set up as a real hobbit home.

With bedrooms

Living rooms.

And kitchen.

Like all good tours this one ended in the pub, the famous Hobbiton Green Dragon.

And to end on an even happier note with a free mug of ale, what more could you ask for.

We were there about 10 years ago and they didn't have a house you could go inside then. We did the evening tour that ended with a song in the party field, a walk through Hobbiton with lanterns and then a feast at the Green Dragon. It was something special. We went to their workshop in Wellington where you could see how they made the props for this and other movies. I'd love to go back to New Zealand some time to see more of the place.
!BEER
The guide said their doing more every year its an amazing place even if your not a lord of the rings nerd
I’m surprised they let you leave. It must have felt like coming home haha🤣
Haha it was well worth the visit and the hobbit house felt just the right size

The Lord of the rings! The hobbit! settings 🤩🤩😍
Thank you for touring us around.. What a wonderful place to explore.
If you ever get the chance it’s worth a visit
God willing... Pretty sure I will 😊
Nice! I enjoyed the visit a lot when I went a few years ago, even though I had not watched the movie. But I can't remember going into the home... I wonder if it's new or if it was closed when I went. It looks so cool inside
They are building more and more in to it all the time there was still construction going on when I went but no work was going on as it was a Sunday. We got a free Green Dragon Tankard to make up for the inconvenience

I like the house. I've seen it in pictures and videos. I think being able to go inside and take some photos would be a great memory. It would be awesome to have the opportunity.
Great, great. :)
All of the inside shots in the movie were shot in a film studio in Wellington sorry to burst that bubble. One nice link though is the interior was all designed by the original set designers for the movie.
