The Xmas market

Each year, crowds gather around the sprawling Christmas Market near Aachen’s magnificent cathedral. The market spreads across a large part of the city center, filling the squares and even extending into the area surrounding the historic City Hall, right in the heart of Aachen.

One of the most striking sights as you approach is the main entrance to Aachen Cathedral. This iconic building, commissioned by Charlemagne hundreds of years ago, stands as a stunning centerpiece to the festive scene. Its history and grandeur provide a breathtaking backdrop to the twinkling lights and bustling market below.

Festive Tradition in Aachen

The moment I set foot in Aachen’s Christmas Market, I felt like I had entered a winter fairy tale. The narrow cobblestone streets were lined with rows of wooden stalls, each one meticulously decorated with twinkling lights and evergreen garlands. As I wandered through, the scents of roasted almonds, spiced pastries, and bratwurst mingled in the cold air, making my stomach growl.

I couldn’t resist stopping at nearly every stall. One vendor had hand-carved ornaments that glinted in the light, while another displayed rows of nutcrackers, each with its own personality. I picked up a small wooden angel as a keepsake and chatted with the stall owner, who proudly told me it was handcrafted by her family.

Families were gathered around the carousel, children laughing as they spun, while groups of friends huddled near the mulled wine stalls, mugs in hand. The whole market buzzed with warmth and community despite the winter chill. The atmosphere was magical—it wasn’t just a market; it was a celebration of the season.

Aachen Cathedral: A Sacred Landmark

Towering above the market, Aachen Cathedral felt like something out of a storybook. I stood for a moment, taking in its Gothic spires and golden mosaics, which shimmered even on a cloudy day. It was as if the building itself radiated history and grandeur.

Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the quiet majesty of the Palatine Chapel. Built in the 8th century under Charlemagne, the octagonal design was breathtaking. The intricate mosaics and the massive chandelier overhead made the space feel both intimate and monumental. I lingered, imagining the countless coronations and ceremonies that had taken place here over the centuries.

The most moving part was the thought of Charlemagne himself walking these halls. His tomb rests within the cathedral, and standing there, I felt connected to a history far greater than myself. Before leaving, I lit a small candle in the chapel, a personal moment of gratitude in the midst of a busy day.

Charlemagne’s Lasting Influence

Walking through Aachen, I couldn’t help but feel Charlemagne’s presence everywhere. Known as the “Father of Europe,” he made this city his home and left an indelible mark. His legacy seemed to live on in the very stones of the city.

At the town hall, built on the site of his imperial palace, I stopped to admire the architecture and the plaques recounting his achievements. Charlemagne’s vision for a unified Europe resonated deeply, especially as I watched people from all over the world gathering at the market. It felt like his dream of bringing people together was alive and well.

Even the locals seem to carry a sense of pride in their connection to such an influential figure. His story is woven into the fabric of Aachen, making every corner of the city feel like part of a larger historical narrative.

Glühwein: The Season’s Spirit in a Mug

No visit to a Christmas market is complete without Glühwein, and in Aachen, it felt like the ultimate winter comfort. I couldn’t resist the temptation of the steaming mugs at nearly every turn. I opted for a classic red wine version, spiced with cinnamon, cloves, and orange.

The first sip was pure warmth, spreading through me like a cozy blanket. The flavors were rich and festive, perfectly balancing sweetness and spice. I wrapped my hands around the mug, savoring the heat as the cold winter air pressed in.

Some stalls offered variations—white wine Glühwein for a lighter taste, and Kinderpunsch, a non-alcoholic spiced punch, for families. I even saw a few creative twists with local flavors added in. I decided to keep the ceramic mug it came in, decorated with a festive scene from Aachen, as a souvenir.

Drinking Glühwein wasn’t just about the taste; it was about the experience. Standing in the glow of the market lights, surrounded by laughter and conversation, it felt like a moment to pause and take it all in. It was the perfect way to warm up, physically and emotionally, during a chilly evening.

Visiting shops

Wandering through the many shops at Aachen’s Christmas Market feels like a treasure hunt. Each stall is filled with unique and beautiful items handcrafted ornaments, delicate glassware, cozy scarves, and charming decorations. I couldn’t help but stop and admire the intricate details of everything on display. Some of it would look perfect in my living room or even add a festive touch to my office. Even if I wasn’t buying, it was wonderful just to view all this.

The atmosphere makes it even more special. The warm lights, the wooden booths, and the festive garlands create such a cozy setting. It’s hard not to get caught up in the magic of it all. Every little detail feels like it was carefully chosen to make you stop, look, and smile.

And then there’s the temptation. Seeing all these unique pieces in such a charming environment makes it easy to want to buy something whether for myself or as a gift. Before I knew it, I was strong and didn’t spend some of my hard earned money yet on this.

Why Aachen’s Market Feels So Special

Aachen’s Christmas Market was more than a festive outing, it was a journey through time and tradition. I left with my hands full of nice cheese, my head filled with memories, and my heart warmed not only by Glühwein but by the people, the stories, and the unique spirit of this city.

As I walked away, I realized Aachen had given me more than just a holiday experience, it had given me a connection to history, culture, and the joy of the season AND some cheese.

Yeah, you know me. This nice cheese goes well with the different beers from me Belgium beer calendar

The beer calendar

This is my beloved beer calendar, a gift from my family that they fill each year with some amazing and often unknown Belgian beers. It’s a tradition I look forward to every holiday season.

The idea is simple but so much fun. Each day, I get my Hand into the Box to search a new bottle, and take a moment to read the label and learn about the brand. Then, I pop it in the fridge to cool down, eagerly anticipating the chance to enjoy it a few hours later.

There’s something so special about this calendar. It’s not just the beers, though those are always fantastic, it’s the thoughtfulness of my family, who put so much care into choosing each one. Every day feels like a small celebration, and I savor every moment.

Have a great time enjoy some special family hours and relax this few weeks end of the year. I will work on my Beer calendar and finish the last few bites from that trees from the Xmas market in Aachen.

Have a great day everybody
