Cenotes are pretty common in the Mexican Yucatan peninsula
Basically, cenotes are natural sinkholes, often in caves, but this one was mostly open.
They were an important water source for the ancient Mayans, and now are used as a tourist attraction, and a way to cool down a bit in this hot region.
The water is surprisingly cold. Where the sea is a comfortable 25 degrees celsius, Cenotes can be as cold as 18C degrees. The cenote was home to numerous fishes, and some of them kept 'cleaning' our feet. Sometimes even almost 'aggressively', but they were small and only nibble on the skin 😄
It's unclear how many Cenotes there are in total, but 2200 have been registered in the Yucatan, with estimates going to as high as 7000 in the region.
For us, it was the perfect relaxing day away from the noise in the touristic places.
I highly recommend checking one of these out if you are here!
That does look gorgeous. I can see the attraction.
