I always like to visit distant places with stories that can be captured in my posts. Today I visited two very small and beautiful places. Both villages with a population of less than two thousand inhabitants are located in the middle of Aveiro and have some quite interesting tourist places to stop and take some photos and at the same time learn about the local history of Portugal! First we will take a walk in "Sanguineira" and finally we will visit the park in "Carregal", don't miss my experience.🏫🚙
When we arrived at the village, the first thing I did was leave the vehicle in front of this beautiful church, which is a must-see in Carregal. Its name is: "Capela do Carregal" or in English "Carregal" Chapel. The origin of the chapel is a mystery and there are no historical records that can define a date. This current church that you see in the photo was inaugurated in 1906, but before that there was already a very small chapel that was not enough for all the believers in the village! And this is where the mystery begins: when and who created the old chapel? It will be a mystery that we will never know, although it is believed that it could have been from the post-medieval era of the 14th or 15th century.🚩🚙
Carregal is a fairly small village and you can walk around it in less than twenty minutes, of course its centre as the surroundings are forests! We can still see some quite old houses, possibly from the beginning of the 18th century with beautiful decorations of colourful tiles and giant doors over three metres high. Carregal is a village that until today was important in artisanal fishing in the Aveiro region and it is because the river "Voga" created a lake called fermentelos with several kilometres of extension and it is in these two places where fishing takes place.🚙🌎
Not only is fishing the predominant activity in the village, but also agriculture. We see many plots of land used for farming, which seem to be small, so they must be old people who grow their own food following that tradition. There are many abandoned houses, turning Carregal into a village for pensioners or a holiday home! I saw some signs advertising a walk along the river.🚙🌎
After leaving the small old village we enter into nature, and see a beautiful pine and eucalyptus forest as well as a great variety of Mediterranean plants, including some aquatic ones because of the lake. At this point we are already in the "Carregal" park, which is intended for visits by motor homes, which helps boost tourism in the villages a bit, and it works because I saw two while walking through the village. Here you can spend a day having a picnic or bird watching.🧭📸
Personally, I really liked seeing that they made some decorations in the park using recycled materials such as old bicycles, rags, branches, and other organic products. Everything was clean and well kept. There are some records that the park is visited by some species of migratory winter birds that by the way must be arriving soon. Due to the ecological importance of the lake, a bird watching post was built.🌻🌎
Now we will take a walk of a few meters until we reach the lake which will give us a beautiful view of the most beautiful part of Carregal and which in turn irrigates some areas of the other neighboring village Sanguineira, my goal is to find a swing that is in the middle of nature.🌎🚙
We arrived at the famous swing that has the title "look with the soul and feel with the heart", we have to be careful because it is slippery, this is the fermentelos lake, a freshwater reservoir that is irrigated by the Voga river that comes from the north, this here is fresh water and in some areas it becomes a forest, this river has been used as food for hundreds of years.🚙🌎
Neighbouring villages "Sanguineira"🏫🚩/Aldeas vecinas "Sanguineira"🌳🧭
This is the most important and predominant Baroque structure in Portugal. It is a private property that is very visited because they are abandoned ruins. It is not known why they stopped being built, but it was the entrance to what was to be the largest Baroque palace in the country. Well, it is still considered the largest "entrance". I couldn't miss it! A path of several kilometers runs through here and you even go over a Roman bridge and the river!🌎🚩
Another important fact is that it was built in 1800 and today it belongs to a private wine company and from time to time they hold wine tasting activities.🍷
Five star gastronomy🥙🚩/Gastronomia cinco estrellas🥩🍛
Finally, to close our experiences in these beautiful villages, we drove a few kilometers to visit this popular restaurant called "Lagar", luxurious and with a quite varied menu, you can eat a good dish for an average of 20-25 euros per person, if you want to save money they also have a daily menu that varies between 11-15 euros with a drink included! That is, for two people you can spend only 23 euros, which is economical for the area! For example, in a neighboring restaurant the prices were 25 per person, spending up to 80 euros on lunch, we saw it was expensive and decided to come to "Lagar" and what an experience, the service and the delicious dishes. I ordered a pork with vegetables and sweet potatoes and my wife a cut of beef with sweet potatoes and salad.🍷🥩

What a great trip you have just made that allowed you to connect with the nature, history and gastronomy of this place, what a great creativity its inhabitants have in making decorative elements with recyclable materials, which means that they care about the environment.
