I love long walks and discovering exotic places in Portugal. Today I wanted to take up the challenge of doing the "E9" trail, one of the most difficult and longest in Portugal. It literally goes from the south (Algarve) to the north (Braga). However, I don't have the resources or time to complete this great odyssey, but I did manage to go from AzeitΓ£o to the port of Setubal with more than 30km of walking. Technically, I have already completed 60km of the "E9" trail. For me, it is a personal challenge that I have to complete in the rest of my life, even if it is in parts!ππ·
I don't know if there is a longer trail than this one in the world, the famous one (E9-GR11) starts in the south of Portugal and goes all the way to Estonia, covering more than five thousand kilometres. I don't know if there is anyone who has already completed it! At least I don't know anyone. Probably in Portugal there are many who have already done it from end to end, which is my goal. Today we are going to complete 61km. This time I am going from the village of "AzeitΓ£o" passing through the "da Arrabida" mountain range to the south of Setubal, exactly at the port. It will be a marathon and I have to race against time to avoid 18:00, since at this time it is already dark.ποΈππ§
This is the first village we are going to pass by, it is "Camarate", which is famous for its landscapes and wineries. One of the best wines on the southern edge of Lisbon is produced here. Historically it was inhabited in the 18th century and from a tourist point of view it has nothing interesting to see, however the landscapes are beautiful with the mountains in the background. In reality, if we are going in that direction we need to go up the mountain and down it, we are always going south.ππ§π
The path is well marked and almost impossible to get lost in. You just have to always follow the red and white line because there are others that lead you astray. When you see the "x" it means that you cannot cross in that direction because you will end up leaving your path.π§π

paths through the forestπ³π²
It is interesting to leave the village and start these small paths through the undergrowth that the nature reserve offers. We will probably walk through the mountains for about 5km or perhaps more, and we will also climb more than 350 meters high and enjoy a beautiful landscape of the Atlantic and Lisbon. I have not even completed half of the trail and the weather makes it difficult for me. It is cold and quite cloudy with wind.π§

We will now pass by a very famous country house in the area, built in the 16th century and still sheltering a long generation of families who have always dedicated themselves to agriculture and livestock. Today it is private and not open to the public, but it is quite a spectacle to enjoy from the outside.π§πποΈ

Here the path starts to get more complicated and we literally always go uphill because we have to reach the peak of the mountain where we will walk straight for a couple of kilometers to reach the next village which is Palmela, but there is still a long way to go.ποΈπ§π²

Luckily for me, the weather was changing and the sun was coming out from behind the clouds, and it was getting warmer. I really needed the sun because I was freezing cold. I was also afraid it would rain and I wasn't prepared at all. This area was quite beautiful because we could see what the forest is like on the mountain.π§π§π»ββοΈ

Clearly the sun was in my favor because I reached the highest point of the mountain (352 meters) and got one of the best photos of the trail. What a landscape, right?ππ²

We are almost halfway there and in the distance we can see the city of Palmela which we will only walk around a little, since we will have to make a detour towards the hills of said city passing under the castle!π§π²π
Palmela is quite pretty and one of the oldest cities in Portugal, dating back to the 11th century and before being conquered by King Henry it was already home to some civilizations in the Bronze Age. You can't miss Palmela Castle, remember that I'm super short on time so I can't show you everything.ππ³

As you can see, the last photos are with the sun in the background and it is almost nightfall but I am just a few kilometres away from finishing my odyssey! This last village is beautiful and full of history because we are going to walk along a Roman road.π³π

uff!! Friends, I arrived super tired. In total I walked more than 32km, including some detours I made. I arrived super sweaty and tired. I had to do some complicated climbs and slippery descents, which caused me to hurt a little, but WE DID IT! Setubal is a fairly important coastal and port city in Portugal.π
