Down Under

I have never been to Australia until recently. It's obviously a shame, as there is so much to see and do there, but what is more shameful that I have 'worked' on Australia for so long! Yeah, don't be surprised, and that is well before the covid days of remote work. Modern exploration geologists in hydrocarbon exploration rarely need to visit the site, and does most of the work from computer. But as Q said once in Skyfall, that "Every now and then a trigger has to be pulled"....so I find myself down under at Perth Australia!

Just for the records, its my favorite Bond Movie, and I absolutely love this scene.

"Not exactly Christmas, is it?".... no, it is not, and it is a "brave new world" out there! Alright, back to Perth.

Perth is a long way out there from Houston where I live. It is a 17 hours direct flight to Sydney, and then another 5 hours plus to Perth. No wonder, I haven't been here, I thought as I got off my Virgin Australia connection! However, outside the airport there weather was pleasant. The drive to downtown was uneventful and can be through any of the mid sized American city. Hey, the downtown is nice and pretty and by the water of the Swan River, which gives it a lot of character. I stayed at the wanterfront, and it is nice and walkable, has a nice set of restaurants and pubs within walking distance.

Kings Park

I had some of the most awful jet lag and so I was up 3 am the following morning. My meeting wasn't till 8am, so I had plenty of time with nothing much to do. Sunrise is very early there (winter solstice in southern hemisphere!), it was light at 5am. So I thought there is plenty of time to walk to the bluff and surrounding park I am observing from my window. That's King's Park, about 30 min walk from downtown, also there is free bus service, called CAT, which I thought was a nice touch. I wanted to stretch my legs and approach the park via Kokoda Track, a series of concrete/rock steps to remember the 60 km track at the site of the battle in Papua New Guinea, between Japanese and Australian troops during WWII. More info about that here.

It is a popular walking path today and lots of people do climb up and down to do their daily exercise steps. The path above leads to a giant Boab tree planted there.

image.png

The tree is called Gija Jumulu. It was removed during the construction of the Great Northern Highway around near Warmun in the Kimberly region of Western Australia, and was transported 3200 KM to its current location here.

There is a viewing area near there and view of the Perth downtown is spectacular.

The view of South Perth from there is equally gorgeous. The park itself has a lot of green and miles of walking path. There are family gathering near the WW monument on top of the bluff every weekend and holidays. I wish I could spend more time there, but work called and I had to leave. I promised myself to get back to the city as soon as possible.

Sort:

It's really interesting to visit new places and I get the impression you explored a bit to discover some of the history and beauty of the city. Being a work trip there probably wasn't as much time for sightseeing as you would have liked but maybe you'll go back there again in the future.

Becca 🌷

Yes, Hope to get back there again for an extended trip.

That would be nice and even better if your family could come with.

Have a nice weekend and thank you for your interactions.

My husband went to Sydney in '68. His experience was a little different from yours :) but he also liked Australia very much.

He went there on R & R, when he was serving a tour of duty in Vietnam. He had spent about 10 months in the jungle basically, sleeping outdoors, on mountain tops, dodging bullets and land mines. When he was given a choice of where to go for a week, he chose Australia. They flew him, along with a plane full of other soldiers, from Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, to Darwin, and then on to Sydney. He said when they arrived in Darwin the airport was closed, but a bar opened just for the soldiers until the plane left.

My husband loved Australia. Stayed for five days (took a long time to fly there and fly back to Vietnam). He remembers taking a bus around the city and staying on a boat overnight with others he knew from Vietnam. He also remembers visiting a pool hall and seeing the inside of bars, a lot of them :))

After his R & R he went back to Cm Ranh Bay, stayed there as an infantry soldier 'till February and then flew home. He always said he would have liked to have gone back to Australia, but that never happened. He also would have liked to visit Vietnam years later, but that never happened either.

That's a while back! Australia was much different then. Perth was just a outpost back then. Even 20 years back it was tiny, like 700k people or so. Most of the recent growth is primarily from mining iron ore and later to some extent by oil & gas from NW shelf.

That's a while back!

We go way back, my husband and I. We met less than two years after he got back from Vietnam. Married just three years after he got out. I never knew the other guy, the pre-war guy. I understand he was quite different :))

Merry Christmas AZ!!

Merry Christmas! Currently in Southern California near Joshua Tree National Park. Next week heading to Hawaii! Hope you are doing well

Hawaii sounds interesting. Is that for work or holiday? I saw they just had a big volcano eruption the other day

Hawaii is totally for holidays. Going to Maui, no eruption there. All the activities are in Big Island

I've never been to Hawaii before, better put it on my to go list as well. Have a great time

Australia is truly awesome. I really do intend to get there at some point. If only to satisfy my wife'e wine lust :OD

You know there is a book that I really like.....by Bill Bryson. I still listen to that audiobook, although I have heard it at least 5 times! Highly recommended. Its super funny.

Amazon Link

I will have to check that one out, I haven't read a Bill Bryson in a long time. He is a great writer!

Bill Bryson writes a good book. I've read this one too and it's funny, even to an Australian.

I'm glad you liked it here and hope you make it back some day.

I told you, watching boxing day test match is something I always want to do. Also visiting some of the diamond mines would be fun! Great Barrier Reef is on the bucket list too.

Done all of that, but gold mines, not diamond mines. So my h to do here man, it's somewhere a person could spend years. Lived here for 54 of them (my whole life) and still finding new things.

Could it ever be satisfied?

Lol, doubtful :OD

Yeah, I agree.

Perth is very beautiful place, glad you enjoyed your visit. I highly recommend an extended holiday and get a chance to explore, I still think Adelaide has the best beaches though.

I remember when I went to Sandakphu the sunrise was already at 0430 in the morning, looking at the Swan River I was wondering when the rivers of our country would become so clean.

In fact Swan River there is not that clean. Mind you only 2M people live in Perth! How many do we have in Delhi? :)

2M people we probably have in gorakhpur! :)

I think there must be 5 crore people living in Delhi and not even one person tries to clean the Yamuna, on the contrary, after the puja, everyone is in a hurry to throw the puja material in the river.

Well, this issue has become linked to religion, so perhaps it is not succeeding

ha good to see you got to Kings Park, Perth is definitely a long way to go for most overseas travelers. Did you get a chance to head down south, i.e Yallingup, Margaret river?

No, didn’t get a chance to get out of town. Only had 4-days. Work trip to visit a data room! Next time

a beautiful blend of nature and city.

Yeah it is. Now it is a city of 2M

I have not been to perth but I have been to the gold coast which I loved. I liked the northern cost with the rain forest and great barrier reef the best.

Yes rainforest of Queensland and Great Barrier Reef are both global heritage sites. I hope to visit someday.

I actually haven't seen any of the new bond movies past Skyfall. I just haven't found the time yet. Skyfall was really good. The photos look beautiful though I have come to expect that based on what others who live in Australia have shared. Safe travels to you.

Yeah, later movies never got up to that level, but they are okay.

Are there two more or three more? I know I missed Spectre and then one that Billie Eilish did the opening song for.

Never been to Australia myself, sounds like an interesting place to visit. It is amazing that they took a huge Baobab tree and transported it 3,200 km!

It’s a massive country with many things to see and explore

Wow that's a looong flight from where you are, the jet lag and the long traveling time is a reason for me not to go there, it's even longer from Amsterdam 😅 27 hours on average OMG!

Although my wife really dislike the cold in the winters here and at the same time it's summer there.

Quite the expensive flight as well but if it's work related that's not important. I'll just stick with 'La France' for now 😁.

Thanks for sharing the pictures and have fun, I hope your jet lag passes soon

Well I am back and left again. In California now, soon will fly to Hawaii

17 hours straight flight sounds not so long as in my case especially considering that for it'll be needed to make couple changes to get to straight flight to Australia. For me I think it can take nearly 22 hours with waiting flight now...
Also 5 a.m. seems not so early when in my region daylight saving time changes were discard several years ago. 😡
But seems that weather and trip promises to you good experience!
So Merry Christmas and waiting next post from Australia!

I typically sleep well in a flight. But even after 10 hours of sleep you still have 6 hours or more to kill!

When I had long distance flights to Brazil, Argentina or Vladivostok I could sleep nearly 8 hours and it was ok. But for my wife or kids it can be problem.
Honestly I should say that sometimes when it is enough time I read books or talk with neighbors. Again if neighbors not against to talk and I'm not annoying them.
Anyway I hope once again I'll be able to visit again mentioned above South American countries, maybe Japan or like you travel to Australia with my family.

The tree is called Gija Jumul, transported 3200 KM. I have no idea if the trees could talk to each other but if they do this tree would be like " I travelled the world".

Yeah. And ‘it’ took a truck

Wow what a beautiful and modern city in the last corner of the planet. 😁

The place you went is very beautiful, a perfect to do travel adventure. I wish I could visit the place. 😁

Great photos!

Very nice city! The view of the city with the ocean view from high up is very gorgeous, as you said, I absolutely agree with you. The giant Boab tree, Gija Jumulu, looks awesome and amazing. The path via Kokoda Track is good for exercise and relaxing with the greenery and beautiful flowers. Thanks so much for sharing.

Gija jumulo tree was so stunning. Such a big stem and ruined.

Best regards and my wishes for a happy holiday season!... Wow, Gija Jumulu is very imposing, I'm glad it has a place of honor. This country is like a dream for me, hopefully I will get to see it one day. Everything I get from Australia, including your posting is very pleasing to me and I'm glad you had some time to enjoy it this time.

Dude that's so cool!

Can't believe it was such a long flight though - that's about how long it was for me coming back Beijing -> Baltimore... yikes!

Thank you for sharing with us :)
