Hi everyone :)
Hope to find you all well and healthy!
Ready for another trip?
Porto Covo! This small corner never ceases to amaze, even if the time when this small village managed to go unnoticed by the general public is gone, and today it is a place of enormous tourist influx, and a sign of that, are the tourists that we can see walking around the site, but also the huge number of buildings that are being built to accommodate all those who move there.
I believe that the place will quickly turn into something devoid of the initial meaning, with the main emphasis on mass tourism and the consequent plundering of natural resources and appropriation of public spaces.
In fact, this is what happens to all places that have something to offer and where business opportunities sometimes give rise to legal violations.
As the local industry is mainly focused on tourism, despite speeding up the process, which is just understandable as it creates business opportunities, it also makes Porto Covo a peaceful and welcoming place, perfect for those looking for a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the big cities.
There everything happens at a slower pace and the people are very friendly and receptive, it is always possible to find that characteristic spirit of a small fishing village among the local inhabitants.
During the brief retreat that i took and that i have been sharing in previous articles, i stopped in this village before heading to the south of the country and, as expected, i couldn't have chosen a more relaxing and pleasant place to stay and rest a little.
Porto Covo is a small coastal village located on the Alentejo coast, in the southwest of Portugal and is mainly known for its breathtaking beaches, with indescribable natural beauty and crystalline waters that invite you to take a refreshing dip, but that was not my case, due to the time of the year (cold), however i had the opportunity to witness some fearless ones taking some dives without major ceremonies :P
There are several beaches there, as well as along the entire Costa Vicentina, and they all share the same type of characteristic, accompanied by huge cliffs and varied stretches of sand, some larger than others, and each one more incredible than the last.
Once there, my family and i, we walked from the well-known central square of the village that connects with all the small and narrow streets that run through it to the other end, passing through the middle of the typical houses with a white façade with a blue stripe at the base, and between souvenir shops and restaurants.
The local gastronomy is a true delight for seafood and fresh fish lovers. Seaside restaurants are known for serving delicious dishes, with intense and authentic flavors that only the region can offer. It's impossible to resist a good grilled sardine or fish grilled over coals, as well as the famous seafood stew, and all this fish arrives at these restaurants through the place i'll show you next.
At the other end, we go down a steep street to the beach of Baía de Porto Covo, one of the highlights, with its small maritime port that gives a special charm to the landscape and where some of the local fishermen live in a group of small houses grouped in a kind of neighborhood.
It's funny and interesting to see not only cars but also some fishing boats parked outside the house.
This was undoubtedly the highlight of this brief visit.
The atmosphere is so pleasant and relaxed that it makes you want to stay there all day, admiring the small boats gently swaying in the water and enjoying the gentle sun that bathes the place. It is a unique and unforgettable experience!
Before getting back in the car and continuing my journey, i went to a cliff to breathe some more of the salty air and retain one more pleasant memory of that place where i know i will return, and look at my surprise when i found another local inhabitant doing what is already habitual and routine for him.
At first it seemed a little dangerous to me, but i quickly realized that the gentleman felt extremely comfortable in that place, not showing much concern with the tidal waves that were approaching and bursting on the rocks right in front of him.
I didn't stay long enough to confirm if he caught anything, but i want to believe that he did and that he returned home as he does every day.
For today i say goodbye to Porto Covo, always with the intention of returning there.
This is definitely a place to visit, not to be missed.
Hope you enjoyed this share
