The Tsar bomb was bigger than the Fat man and Little boy nuclear bomb dropped by the US on Japan.I was curious when I found out about “Tsar bomba”, the biggest nuclear detonation ever in history, which was detonated by the Soviet Union.

On 30th October 1961 the Soviet union conducted a nuclear test. They launched the “Tsar bomba” On the Novaya Zemlya Island which would become the most powerful thermonuclear weapon ever detonated. Luckily Novaya Zemlya was a remote location in the Russian Arctic Sea.

Tsar bomba weight about 27 tons,it was 26feet(8 metres) in length and a diameter of 7feet.

The Tsar bomba was dropped by a plane and the plane had a 50% chance of surviving, if the pilot wasn't careful then the plane would be knocked out of the sky. After when the bomb was detonated a shockwave was observed in the air at dikson settlement which is 700km(430miles) away. The mushroom cloud reached an altitude of 210,000feet. The bomb was dropped on a remote location far away from human settlement and no death was reported.

According to Nukemap, if the bomb was dropped on Washington D.C, it would have killed 2.2 million people and spread dangerous level of radioactivity as far as Pennsylvania (237Km away from Washington DC)
