Open source non-Android operating systems worth trying on your smartphone

Silicon Valley has always preached that technology, not truth, will set you free. The jury is still not specialized in that, but there is no doubt that smartphones, while they have changed our world drastically, come with some serious flaws. Central app stores mean that useful apps can disappear in a jiffy, while apps themselves use the sensors on these devices to monitor most aspects of our lives. Perhaps worst of all, most of these machines cost a lot, yet they are not expected to operate for more than a few years.

Why do you have to move to an alternate operating system?

If you are looking to drastically improve your privacy, control your personal information, or just want to keep using the perfectly good Nexus 5 for a few more years, the answer might be to replace your phone's operating system with a free and open source alternative operating system. It is easy to operate on Android and iOS platforms, but there are many alternatives available with varying degrees of ease of use.

What will you lose in switching to another operating system?
Some words of warning here at first: None of these operating systems will be what Android and iOS users are accustomed to. Some have a completely different browsing and usage method. Most of them won't be able to access all (or any) of the apps you're used to, especially those found almost exclusively on the Google Play and Apple App Store. But for Android devices at least, there are some alternative app stores like Amazon’s AppStore, APKMirror, and F-Droid. You need to be careful when installing apps that have not been specifically checked by Google or Apple, however, proceed at your own risk.

You also won't enjoy the kind of regular customer support, security updates, and updates that you get with a regular device. Getting these operating systems on your phone can be a task for you to do on your own, which most people don't want to do.

What? No actual content? This is a sad excuse for a post. Why no reviews of alternatives, links to projects, etc?
