NightLight

The world lights up in the dark
Without the distractions that crosses eyes
It all exists in those quiet hours
A beautiful girl wearing a dress called desire
A tree that grew up out of the sandlot
A father casting a fishing line
I’m better with no mind
So I take a tennis ball and hurl it into shadow
Beyond the lamplight boarder
A yellow whiz returns to me
This way I beat back the darkness
Each bounce nudging open the window separating day and night
Where I toss sun burnt memories out
Before the wind can blow them back in

Sort:

beat back the darkness
With your light

That is the way to do it.

It took me 3 days and some change to respond to this because of post restrictions. Not a good first impression of the platform. First day as a user. 3 posts later I can't do anything else. People comment and respond to my initial post. I wait one day to respond and can only get to one of them. I thought I would at least have 3 more...I was wrong. For UX this is an absolute grind to get enough from posting and if people actually interact with your post you have to wait 24hrs to get back to them. With the ability of only one post a day I don't see how I could engage with people properly to organically build.

TLDR: Takes as long as mail to communicate on this platform for new users.

I suspect, if the shadow can return the tennis ball like a 'yellow whiz', that the wind is going to blow the memories back too, in spite of the speaker's best efforts. It's a bit of a Sisyphean struggle to be 'with no mind', and I think your poem shows us such a struggle. Your gentle lines here reflect the 'quiet hours' and nostalgia for a simple memory very well. Sometimes when I read a poem, a good one, I am inspired to return to my own poetry; this one inspired me to write. :)

Glad I could inspire. I appreciate your thoughtful insight into the poem, especially the shadow returning the tennis ball. I would have engaged more earlier but as a new account there is some teething issues with access. If I figure out how to post more than once per day because of energy I will engage more.
