Far from the Tree
Don't you see?
Not like you, like me.
In a thousand ways,
Across a million days
You thought we're the same
What a shame.
You were there,
Why not share?
I vaguely remember your face,
Maybe the sound of a voice.
And was that the smile,
I missed this while?
Not to be,
don't you see?
A good heart lay wasted,
A sweet life went untasted.
What could have unfurled,
Tightly curled.
Reflections abound
No value found.
Tried to recover with home,
Only to be left alone.
Wishing for more,
Nothing held in store.
No regrets left,
Just survivor bereft.
A wake of kindness lost,
And counting the cost,
Of thought and sad memory
Too close to the tree.
All was not in vain, all is not lost. For those beautiful memories that you spent together have remained in your brain. But, there is no turning back. A hug full of blessings.
I wonder if memories are as valuable as the emphasis we place on them, since they can be false?
I'm getting a lost twin from this, one lost very young, perhaps still in the womb.
I think that this is a very good interpretation. Pretty niche, isn't it? I didn't write it with this in mind, but I can definitely see the parable.
It's quite unlike your previous poems, at least of those I have read. More concise, open to more interpretations, has a broader feel to it, socially; the character is not as self-minding as many of your characters seem to me. The recurring "don't you see, you were there" motif draws me in. Not centered.
I like this one. It's got good teeth and bones or something.
Our feelings can be the same throughout the years, but we are definetely not the same men.
"Not the same men" is an interesting thing to think about, isn't it? We change so much and are the same person, but what we start as and end as, might behave very differently.
Anazing how one makes you fill lost and found especially in thoughts at the same time
The emotion that is being expressed in this poem is really striking. I love how it portrays the bittersweet nature of missed opportunities and memories that are left behind. Each line leaves an imprint of sense of longing and reflection.
Some feelings refuse to go away easily, particularly someone our heart so much desires. There are people in our life that matter a lot. But nature will always have its way. We can't be here forever, and distance and human life endeavours might also create barriers. What a heartfelt poem.
My favorite part of the poem, more introspective than the rest. In my quietest hours, sometimes I think about all the alternative lives I could have lived if I stayed in either of my marriages (or if Sweet Jane never passed). A good heart lay wasted indeed, Jane was simply the best.
This poem is presented well, the meanings of the phrases are hidden and will need someone with understanding of poems to bring it meaning out. Keep on the work sir
It reminds me of a conversation one can have with the higher self. An intriguing play with words/thoughts from the beginning of the adventure (the title of the poem) until the last breath, which is "too close to the tree." Interesting.
