About learning new English words

in Blockchain Poets3 years ago (edited)

It is a long time for me not to write any blog in the Hive. Maybe because I'm too lazy or I have no inspiration since my life is boring. So I just share some new English words and idioms I've learned recently here.

Desideratum:迫切需要之物;所愿望之物
Oh, I love this word from Latin, which means 'something desired as a necessity'. And I also love that famous poem titled 'desideratum' very much.

Below is an excerpt from it!

Be yourself.

做自己就好。

Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love;

尤其不要佯装真情。也别对爱灰心丧气。

for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.

尽管世界荒芜,现实荒凉,唯有爱如绿草常青。

Is it right?Yeah, love is as perennial as the grass. No matter what happens, we can still find love and hope growing like the green grass in the spring.

Another interesting word is 'dervish'. Oh, what is it?Well,

a dervish is a member of a Muslim religious group which has a very active and lively dance as part of its worship. (伊斯兰教的)托钵僧

It was the first time for me to hear of 'dervish' when I learned the word 'waft' from a Youtube video, where the teacher explained 'waft' by taking 'dervish' as an example.

The whirling dervishes seem to waft round and round with nothing to support them.

Good idea! It intrigued me at a stroke and I could remember 2 words without efforts. Just close your eyes and allow your imagination to fly in your mind: the verdishes' dance is so light-footed that they are like a kind of smoke/dream wafting through the room.

And I also learned a new astronomical term--worm hole from @raj808's Sci-fi blog. God, have you heard of wormhole before?

In physics, a wormhole is a tunnel in space that is believed to connect different parts of the universe. 宇宙隧道

the story of an astronaut who is sucked through a wormhole into the other side of the universe.

...一名宇航员被吸进宇宙隧道到了宇宙另一边的故事。

Can you imagine the existence of such kind of tunnel? So amazing, isn't it?For me, a person from a country with the Great Firewall, wormhole is just like a VPN by means of which I am sucked into the Hive/Youtube world successfully.

At the same time I want to give my feedback to A New Line of Hive Promotional Clothing - Asking for Feedback from the Community: I absolutely would like to own a piece of clothes--a hoodie or a T-shirt with the Hive design art in order to promote Hive community. Pitifully it is impossible for me to sponsor new people to join Hive community, because most of them even have no way to open and register on the Hive website without the help of VPN thanks to the bloody Great Firewall of China.

At last, I just list some new English idioms I've learned from Teacher Mike.

It's great to see that you are continuing your English studies. In one of my day jobs I teach English to Japanese students, so I am always overjoyed to see people studying hard and taking an interest in the language.

Good going 😃

Thank you for your beautiful words very much! Yeah, since I find native-speaking English teacher's videos for free on Youtube via VPN, it seems I have just entered a huge treasure trove. So I say that I've been sucked into a brand-new and secret world through a wormhole. God, if the so-called "wormhole" really exists, it should be as precious and important as VPN. Just as one of my favorite Youtube English teachers wrote in his blog "About China" : The only way you can get around the Great Firewall is by using a VPN. Those three letters will become more important to you than oxygen. The problem though, is that even the best VPNs offer dismal results. (He is a Canadian and once taught English in China for a year and a half.)

Maybe very few people can imagine the horrible information blockade. Being a person from the country known for not only the Great Wall in ancient time but also the Great Firewall in modern time, no one else than me knows how most of common Chinese have not any chance to see the outside world, let alone learn English from the foreigner teachers, which is just a privilege only for wealthy Chinese in select society. (Of course, a lot of foreigners are also ignorant about China, even failing to realize the existence of the Great Firewall in China and VPN is hard to come by.)That being so, I absolutely have no reason not to cherish this great VPN opportunity and take advantage of this free native English-teaching resource.

Interestingly, many times I feel I'm just like a small sponge being thrown into a tremendous English sea. Oh, too much sea water (copious amounts of teaching videos)...I have no choice but to keep on absorbing water...I wish I could be an avid English learner, as "greedy" as possible! Pitifully, I have no way to follow and learn from so many native-speaking English teachers on Youtube, and I even often can't catch up with the updated videos from the teachers I've followed. (One Youtube teacher I followed can even issue no less than 4 videos per day).

On the other hand, the truth is that a lot of Chinese schools must pay money to sponsors who can help them seek white native-speaking English teachers from developed countries due to the rarity in Chinese market, which is really a sharp contrast/irony.

Desideratum:迫切需要之物;所愿望之物
Oh, I love this word from Latin, which means 'something desired as a necessity'

I had never heard of this word so thank you for introducing it to me :)

And I also learned a new astronomical term--worm hole from @raj808's Sci-fi blog. God, have you heard of wormhole before

In physics, a wormhole is a tunnel in space that is believed to connect different parts of the universe. 宇宙隧道

the story of an astronaut who is sucked through a wormhole into the other side of the universe.

As to my little contribution, Im just happy to help you learn a new word. Did you know I am just starting to learn Portuguese in preparation for a possible move there in the next 6 months - a year. It's a hard language to learn as it's a mish-mash of Italian, Spanish and Moorish influences :)

P.s.

2.Who cut the cheese? 💨
Meaning: Who farted?

This one made me laugh 😂

Oh. I am really glad that I can unexpectedly introduce you the word 'desideratum'! And it is great for me to know that you start to learn Portuguese and prepare to move to Portugal in the near future. I am looking forward to reading your new series of blogs about Portugal. I guess it must be a wonderful and historical country full of sunshine although I am extremely ignorant about it(It is said that Spain is known for its sunshine).

As far as I know, Latin is the common root of French, Italian and Spanish. I just learned the only Italian word 'adagio' from your Haiku. I feel Moorish influence should be a kind of language from North Africa(maybe similar to Arabic), ok?

Yeah, Teacher Mike always tries to teach the real English in daily life, even including the expressions with the 'F*ck' word. I love his teaching style.

Well done
Lets go to learn forever

Thank you!

I discovered the word ‘dervish’ recently too. It was in a book called Angela’s Ashes. How it was used: “… this whirling dervish with a damaged child in her arms…”

Yeah, it is really interesting. Before long I heard of the word dervish, I ran across a video on how a group of Turkish dervishes in white robes whirl round and round.

Is it right?Yeah, love is as perennial as the grass. No matter what happens, we can still find love and hope growing like the green grass in the spring.

I so much love this lines. So true about love.

Thank for your appreciating it so much! I love this great metaphor, too. "Desideratum" is a prose poem by the American writer Max Ehrmann.

Yes, I don't know if it's for Blockchain Poets, but your poems are missed here! Cheers!

Thank you for your support! I feel relieved! The reason why I think I shouldn't post this blog into "Blockchain poets" is because it is neither my original poem nor the ancient Chinese poem. I only quoted a poem, so I'm afraid that I am to blame for having offended against the rule of "Blockchain Poets" community. However, it is a wonderful poem titled the great word "desideratum'', which is worth sharing.

I hope to see other poems by you soon! Maybe you can find inspiration elsewhere, life, although often routine and boring, has many amazing things that can give birth to a poem. I can't write poems every week either, I just don't find that many interesting topics that I think I have something to say. This week, in fact, I couldn't come up with anything. I think that's a good thing, because it's very noticeable when poems are forced. But every once in a while I discover a poem in the most unsuspected places or objects. You just have to be open to things and words surprising you.

Thank you for your sincere advice! In fact, I feel very flattered when I read 'my poems are missed here' from you. After all, I am not a poet and I seldom write poems except that sometimes I share a few ancient Chinese poems here since I am only a humble English learner. I'm really happy that you are interested in my last poem written on Valentine's Day. At that time I just read a poem Happy Letter by Emily Dickinson, which seized me at a stroke, so I couldn't help thinking of how I wrote emails to my weblover with great passion before.

Yeah, I see eye to eye on your opinion. Good poem should flow out of heart naturely, instead of writing it by force.

I wish I could find inspiration as you wish!

After all, I am not a poet

Everyone is a poet. Some just don't write as often as others, and some don't trust their inner voice, and others haven't discovered the joy of poetry yet. But everyone is already a poet.

I too look forward to more poems from you.

Thank you for your encouragement and expectation! I feel extremely honored to read your comment! Yeah, everyone can have a story and every story can turn into a poem, so in this sense, everyone is already a poet. I believe that love and passion is the inspiration source of poet.

I am sure that, sooner or later, you will find it. I also believe that you are a poet. !LUV

All thanks to your lucky words!!!
